Thank you for posting this it was informative. I started to feel funny on the left side of my face 11/23/11. Then 11/24/11 I woke up with my mouth going to the right side of my face scared it was a stroke I went to ER thats were I learned about bells Palsy. Two weeks later face is somwhat back to normal but I still have alot of pain in left ear and jaw. The Dr said it was caused by BP. Sounds seem to be louder on the left side. Is this normal can I except this to go away?
I had BP last January 18 and believe or not inside my PA'soffice and SHE DID NOT SEE, she kept looking to the computer-I left and by the time I got home my daughter almost faitend asking me what was wrong with me-I reply-'nothing' she puts me in front of a mirror...all I felt some numbness in my lips in the morning but was winter so. I do have the herpes virus in my system. Great frustration was none of the doctors here recomended massage . I am so glad my folks back home told me to do so.
I just got diagnosed with BP yesterday... i hope it goes away. i know it may take a while for it to recover but this couldnt have come at a better time. i have no seen my girlfriend in over a year and now when i do have a chance to see her again. shes gonna see me like this...
When I was eight I had BP. The left side of my face was affected by it. I got over it in about a week, but over the years I've noticed that when I yawn my left eyes doesn't react the same way as my right. And the left side of my mouth doesn't move the same way as the right when I grin at something funny. I didn't know if there were any lasting effects from having BP. Also my father and step mother had it at the same time. Is that possible too? I'm just wondering if it had to do with herpes virus
@kj94tube Bells Palsy has to do with our Neurosystem. It 's inflammation to the 7th cranial nerve. So you have to eat fruits and vegetables that target the Neurosystem. You also have to take supplements that are for Nerves. Just the basic b12,b2,multivitamin and b6 should already be in your multivitamin. Why do you think people even after years of having it can get better. It's possible to get more movement even though you've had it for awhile. If anymore questions message me for tips.
I had Bp for a week and it was the worst week of my life. I couldn't imagine living with it permenantly. They really need to increase research for this.
What causes a second and third episode of BP. I currently have BP for the first time and I've had it since 5-30-10. I am just getting the appearance of a smile but I have discomfort in my non BP ear, can anyone respond to this.
Getting to bed before 10:30pm (very hard for most of us in our late night society) is critical to the healing process. Drinking lots of good water (preferably Ionized - check out Kangen Water) and laying off the alcohol is also very beneficial to the healing process. It takes a long time for the body to create an episode so be patient and do the right things and it will heal! Facial exercises and devices that stimulate the muscles (check out Dermal tone) have been very effective as well. Keith
I went to a Chi gung Master who recommended Acupuncture and it helped tremendously. The sooner you can start treatment after onset (the first 72 hours) is the most beneficial for a speedier recovery. This last April I had my 3rd episode and was able to arrange an acupuncture session the same day and did one every other day for first two months, then two a week for 3rd month and I am now down to 1 per week.
I am now recovering from my 3rd episode of Bells Palsey, My first was in 1987 when I was 23 years old and the doctors were less than useless in giving any advice as to what to do other than sunglasses (very important!). Fortunately it went away completely in 4-6 months and I forgot about it. 12 years later in 1999 I had my 2nd episode and immediately knew what it was this time. At this point had been living in CA around lots of alternative therapies since 1990. Keith
... he didn't try steroids. It took a month first time and looks the same time frame again (o_0). Advice - get a good pair of sunnies - eye damage is very possible - didn't even know it couldn't close my eye for a few days (sunlight + retna not good). with sunnies you can tape up your eye without people seeing, this makes your eye feel so much better. Keep massaging the nerve and force the eye to blink. Eyedrops are good too. lay off drinking etc and rest up - it made me crazy tired. IT WILL GO!
i've had bells twice now, just getting over the 2nd now (hopefully). For me it is definitely attributable to the herpes virus(s) - i used to always seem to have a coldsore ready to surface if i was under the weather... when i stopped getting em i got this instead! first time i freaked out this time i did a uni exam and work almost full time with it (came during exams first time too). Never had treatment cos my local GP is a goose and said it wasn't much to worry about...
It has been almost a year since my BP. If you look at me you can't tell nothing is wrong but some of my facial expressions are n ot 100%.. This really bothers me and I don't like it. My Doctor told me this could take up to 2 years to fully recover from this. I get a tingling sensation in my upper lip and on the side of my nose near my cheek.. I dont know if I'm still in the healing process or not. I also heard that botox can help with Bells Palsey. Is that true?
Its been almost a year now and if you look at me you cant tell I have it but certain facial expressions I make arent 100%.. I was told by my doctor this could take up to 2 years to fully recover! I get tingling sinsation on my upper lip and on the side of my nose where my cheek starts.. I dont know if I'm still healing or what?
I am working in Dubai and I met 1 man who have had BP last year. He said the Doctor says he got infected by a bacteria. His immune system was down that time he adds because he was very stressed for weeks and always working overtime. Then suddenly this happens to him. He was advised to take therapy and medication. Aside from that he took food supplements. He was cured i think within 4 months.
ive had bells palsy every since i was in the 2nd grade ill be 21 later this month and i almost made a full recovery so its not as critical as some cases ive seen i just use facial excersise to help with my bells palsy. I still have some problems seeing out of my right eye but its comming along i just wonder why its taking years for me to surpass this. having bells palsy really suks ass
My father had it for two weeks, to the point it looked like his 'face was melting', and he is 99% recovered already! And he's nearly 70! I care a lot about BP patients, its hit three people in my life. This 'doctor' makes it sound so hopeless to adults... I don't buy it.
I have Bell Palsy and im only 13,i was "diagnosed"with it today.I think it started cuz of a recent ear ache.on the lower part of my ear..I am so self-conscious about the way i look with it.i try to think that it doesn't look that bad..but then i think other wise,i hope this goes away soon...=[ i really do.-ashley[:
I just contracted BP last year and everytime I take school pictures I am reminded that I am different, that I can't smile right, my eye waters when I eat and when I laugh one eye is opened and the other is closed. People are very ignorant, they tell me too smile and when I tell them I can't they assume I'm being difficult.... not many people are aware of BP and I would like to spread awareness.
i just wanna say to all of u that r dealing with BP regardless of how long u have had it.....keep ur head up and dont let stupid comments that other people say get u down. i have had BP all my life and there has always been idiots to say ignorant comments about the way i smile. BP is not a death sentence....it is a blessing in disguise. because of BP i have learned that it doesnt matter wat u look like on the outside....it is the inside that counts.
randomkath...Thank U 4 msg :-) , my son is dealing with it amazingly well, he says that there are many in this world with far bigger problems, I am so proud of him. He is still handsome 2 years later (as I keep reminding him!). He will always have that crooked smile, he will always have the teary eye, but he will never loose his fun loving personality! That's my boy! Remember guys, unlike the comments from this doctor, bells palsy CAN be permanent. Lov youself, no matter what. x x
@randomkath92091 Thats true. I have BP since i was 2yrs old. Now I am 34 and a professor in a top university in Asia. Sometimes i still feel shy about my condition but it doest stop me from doing what i want. =)
@lindle8 WOW! i am glad to hear that BP has not held you back!!! (i dont let it hold me back either!) life is too short to whine about what SHOULD be.....but rather, we need celebrate the wonderful things we DO have.....and that is LIFE itself. i thank God for my BP....because i could have had something really terrible like a missing limb or a heart murmor...or even asthma! but i have BP instead of those horrible ailments...God is so good to us! =)
@LarryTheMonkeyHorse im going on 20 years now with having BP. i still dont lose hope even though it probably wont ever go away for me. i know how hard it is to keep believing and i really hope you dont give up on believing. remember, everything happens for a reason. ;)
This makes me so angry. My son had a bells palsy at age 15, had a bad cold and complained of pain in lower neck, next morning one side paralysed. Instant ER room, steroids, holistic remedies... Useless. Over time some recovery has happend, but his face will NEVER be the same. His smile is crooked, his eye tears constantly, no one can offer any help. How does this doctor know most children recover, those that dont have nowhere to go, they have to live with it.
i understand ur anger.....i was born with it and i have had it all my life....i still smile crooked and my eye still tears up every so often...but i have been blessed to have friends and family that love me regardless and BP has taught me a very valuable lesson. it doesnt matter wat u look like on the outside....it is the inside that counts :)
I've got the BP 8 months ago. Unfortunately, when I smile; my eye is closed and when I try to close my eye; my mouth is stretched. Also, when I try to say the letter "B" or blowing with a closed moth; my eye starts blinking and get smaller. I was told this because a new facial nerve has grown and was linked with the wrong muscles, thus, the nerve deliver the order to the wrong muscle or duplicate the signal. Question : Is that right and what is the treatment.
if you guys have side effect on steriod like having a mouth sore believe me if you still take steriods your mouthsore well get worst so stop taking it,.instead just massage ur face before going to bed and take vitimin b,.cause thats what i done i am fine now
i got bells palsy right now,.the doctor gave me steriods, but i stop taking after 4 days cause it make a bad side effect on me,.my mouth swelling,.i got lots of mouth sore,.i got mouth sore on my toung,..i got bad throat,.i got tonsilitis,.so ithink the steriods doing the illnes i have right,.so right now i dont take anything well see what happen,.
omi God. I just took the steriod today and got a mouth sore 3 hours after taking it. By the way , i have bell's palsy..but not serious type..cant even tell..but still..im scared it might get worse
whe i had it i had the same but mine was bad i was 14 but im 15 i didnt cure until i was given treatment and took massages on the face i was give steroids like crazy i felt horrible it was pretty horrible people at school made fun of me i was like god grow up but anyone out there trust me you do get cured it took me 2 months to get cured just pray and take your medicine thats what i did
they dont its probably the user who says oh im sick i aint getting up well do get up and exercize every day in the morning and then around 5pm thats when your body seems to not wanna act much
my half face its paralyze my doc say its because wind entery in my ear he say that i be curre for two or three week with some drugs did you cure for three week please answer mee sorry for my anglish
this is my 4th day i've had it, i think its a reaction from the medecine i had for my bak...it suks not being able to talk properly but i hope i make a good recovery
i am havin it now and its the first 3 days , it sucks, i feel like i am dying, but hopefully i will recover. i think the cause in my case was that i was on the fone for 4 hours.
i got a inner ear infection when i was 18 and got bells it was treated with penicillion and vitiman c and i was told to say the vowels as to get the mucsles working good luck and hope my story helps !
hi im 21, i had bells palsy when i was 11, that took 6 weeks to go, then i got it when i was 17, n that took 10 days to go,, now im 21 and have got it again, ive had it for 6 weeks now, iv got to go for a brain scan soon n may have to have a lumbar puncture.
I go had Bell's Palsy about 1.5 yrs ago, and as a result now have synkenesis (ie. when I close my mouth, my R eye closes slightly, or when I close my R eye the R side of my mouth pulls up). I've read that there are excersizes to alleviate or at least minimize the effects. Have you heard of these exercises? If so, do you know what they are? Thanks!
Hey well, i think i got bell's on me lol. it started 4 days ago, man this really sucks bad, hade it but owell, i gues i have to deal with it,by the looks of it of researching in the internet its a comon thing that hapends, but mu Question is? does any one know the difference between severe to moderate cases because i don't fell any pain at all, the right side of my face is just numb. hope to hear from some one
well i have bell's palsy like for 6 day . but is going away very fast . it's better than the first days . i hope i don't stay like that longer because i will died (lmao) but i am being patient about it ..good advice dr.
@drmdk Various Herpes viruses have been found to be linked to BP in about 60% of cases, which still leaves the other 40% of cases without explanation. There are other unknown factors. Nearly 90% of adults harbor one or more of the Herpes family, so Herpes is not the cause. Oddly enough, antivirals have been shown to offer little or no benefit in BP cases. The plain truth is that it is unknown what causes this. Your doctor will tell you the same if you ask him/her.
@drmdk BTW, my source is the neurologist at Sacred Heart Medical Center ER in Spokane, WA. I came down with a very mild case last Thursday. It is already improving. Just FYI so you didn't think I was just some random idiot on the web. CDC and NIH both have factsheets on their websites.
@ALANAHBENAY It's the same Herpes Simplex virus that causes cold sores, not the STD. Not all cases of Bell's Palsy are thought to come from HSV though. There are other possible causes, including other viral infections and trauma.
I had bells palsy when I was around 11 and got it again when I was around 20 or 21. I have to say there isn't anything more aggravating than having this. I didn't even want to be seen out in public or be around any of my friends. The second time I got this I thought it wasn't going to go away. I then started doing this thing called shock therapy that brought my face back to normal. I still have a few tears roll down the eye sometimes when I eat because of the nerve you were talking about though.
Can you tell me a little bit more about that shock terapy.... I got bells palsy when I was 16 years old, now I am 33 and still have some problems. sometimes I feel my face a little numb,I think I could use some of this shock terapy.
Hay at the moment i am suffering from bells palsy which is very anoying! When i got it i could notice after every day that it was getting better then suddenly after having it for 6days i woke up and it had actually got much worse! Does anyone know if this is normal or has this happend to anyone who has had it before? I would be grateful of some responses. Thank you
Hi. I just turned 13 like 13 days ago or something and I have been living with my bell's palsy for a year now. My face is like that to so don't worry. One day I woke up and It was alot better then a few day later it wa wore than ever so just hang in there. It'll get better.
I seems to be going round lately, iv hear many people have had it just round my area of liverpool. Just wondering have you still got it and do you know if its going to go or not mate?
Thanks for the video, but what about the various treatments available, such as acupuncture, electrical stimulation (TENS ?), and facial exercises? What's the general medical opinion on such things, especially for adults with a mild but long-term condition? Do these treatments actually work; or are they just a waste of time?
These are all helpful, but there is no real quick fix to it. There is research going into to it, but VERY little- just not a lot of money behind it... For now, the standard treatment for BP is prednisone- a kind of steroid/ anti-inflammitory to calm down the afflicted nerve, and then the anti-viral Acyclovir- since BP is commonly associated with the Herpes Symplex Virus as wel as many other viruses.
I've had it now for about 5 years. What helped the most has been sheer dogged repetition of facial exercises (say 1000 per day, counted off slowly with breaks at every 100, just before going to bed) over long periods of time just to see minor results. I kept on, and on, and on doing the facial exercises, and now my face is almost back to perfect symmetry, although when I am tired the BP still really shows.
well I got it for the second time, this time on the right side of my face, the first time was on the left side of the face, my pain specialist recommended this. Colostrum may help: Support immune system function Combat bacteria and viruses Enhance skin and muscle rejuvenation Support joint and cartilage function Build lean muscle mass Metabolize (burn) fat Enhance mood Maintain healthy intestinal flora Increase strength and stamina Accelerate healing of injury or trauma
So sorry to hear that, It was 9 months my body didn't fully recover, I was still weak, but now I am back to normal, my face moves really good, and the doctor told me I was 98% back to normal I'm eating good, spinach which I hate I make it in smooties with banana and apple juice eekk I'm still taking colostrum
Thank you for posting this it was informative. I started to feel funny on the left side of my face 11/23/11.
Janclearwater 2 years ago
i understand ur anger.....i was born with it and i have had it all my life....i still smile crooked and my eye still tears up every so often...but i have been blessed to have friends and family that love me regardless and BP has taught me a very valuable lesson. it doesnt matter wat u look like on the outside....it is the inside that counts :)
randomkath92091 2 years ago
I've got the BP 8 months ago. Unfortunately, when I smile; my eye is closed and when I try to close my eye; my mouth is stretched. Also, when I try to say the letter "B" or blowing with a closed moth; my eye starts blinking and get smaller. I was told this because a new facial nerve has grown and was linked with the wrong muscles, thus, the nerve deliver the order to the wrong muscle or duplicate the signal. Question : Is that right and what is the treatment.

I'm on my second bout with Bell's. I just wish he talked more about adults since adults are the more prevalent victims.

ponchshont 3 years ago
I go had Bell's Palsy about 1.5 yrs ago, and as a result now have synkenesis (ie. when I close my mouth, my R eye closes slightly, or when I close my R eye the R side of my mouth pulls up). I've read that there are excersizes to alleviate or at least minimize the effects. Have you heard of these exercises? If so, do you know what they are? Thanks!

I heard it comes from having herpes????? is that true?????
ALANAHBENAY 3 years ago
Yes - many cases have Herpes Infection
drmdk 3 years ago
80% of the population has HSV-1 (cold sores) so of course most people with bells palsy have a form of the herpes virus.
walty12 3 years ago
@drmdk Various Herpes viruses have been found to be linked to BP in about 60% of cases, which still leaves the other 40% of cases without explanation. There are other unknown factors. Nearly 90% of adults harbor one or more of the Herpes family, so Herpes is not the cause. Oddly enough, antivirals have been shown to offer little or no benefit in BP cases. The plain truth is that it is unknown what causes this. Your doctor will tell you the same if you ask him/her.
bumoffhtestreet 1 year ago
@drmdk BTW, my source is the neurologist at Sacred Heart Medical Center ER in Spokane, WA. I came down with a very mild case last Thursday. It is already improving. Just FYI so you didn't think I was just some random idiot on the web. CDC and NIH both have factsheets on their websites.
bumoffhtestreet 1 year ago
@ALANAHBENAY It's the same Herpes Simplex virus that causes cold sores, not the STD. Not all cases of Bell's Palsy are thought to come from HSV though. There are other possible causes, including other viral infections and trauma.
Sunshyne276 1 year ago
I had bells palsy when I was around 11 and got it again when I was around 20 or 21. I have to say there isn't anything more aggravating than having this. I didn't even want to be seen out in public or be around any of my friends. The second time I got this I thought it wasn't going to go away. I then started doing this thing called shock therapy that brought my face back to normal. I still have a few tears roll down the eye sometimes when I eat because of the nerve you were talking about though.
thetachi678 3 years ago 5
Can you tell me a little bit more about that shock terapy.... I got bells palsy when I was 16 years old, now I am 33 and still have some problems. sometimes I feel my face a little numb,I think I could use some of this shock terapy.

When i got it i could notice after every day that it was getting better then suddenly after having it for 6days i woke up and it had actually got much worse! Does anyone know if this is normal or has this happend to anyone who has had it before? I would be grateful of some responses. Thank you

Thanks for the video, but what about the various treatments available, such as acupuncture, electrical stimulation (TENS ?), and facial exercises? What's the general medical opinion on such things, especially for adults with a mild but long-term condition? Do these treatments actually work; or are they just a waste of time?
Bijoupenthouse 4 years ago
These are all helpful, but there is no real quick fix to it. There is research going into to it, but VERY little- just not a lot of money behind it... For now, the standard treatment for BP is prednisone- a kind of steroid/ anti-inflammitory to calm down the afflicted nerve, and then the anti-viral Acyclovir- since BP is commonly associated with the Herpes Symplex Virus as wel as many other viruses.
brothertodd7 3 years ago
I've had it now for about 5 years. What helped the most has been sheer dogged repetition of facial exercises (say 1000 per day, counted off slowly with breaks at every 100, just before going to bed) over long periods of time just to see minor results. I kept on, and on, and on doing the facial exercises, and now my face is almost back to perfect symmetry, although when I am tired the BP still really shows.

So sorry to hear that, It was 9 months my body didn't fully recover, I was still weak, but now I am back to normal, my face moves really good, and the doctor told me I was 98% back to normal I'm eating good, spinach which I hate I make it in smooties with banana and apple juice eekk I'm still taking colostrum
weloveaz 4 years ago
Well I hope you feel better, I just hope I don't get it again.
Molonca 4 years ago
I wish you would talk more about that 3% that gets a recurrence Doctor.
how can you avoid it in the future if you had it already, is there vitamins, or minerals that I could take?
