  • I love Jodie Foster's voice.

  • Poor Tom Cruise. He will never win one

  • I watched Branagh's Henry V a few days ago for the first time since my family rented it back when you still rented movies on VHS, the viewing of it having been one of my most powerful memories all that time. When I learned that Branagh was nominated for best actor but didn't win, I thought "what? Were the judges blind? What could have beaten that?"

Then I saw this. Fair play, Daniel Day Lewis. One of many well-deserved awards.

  • 1:59 Shit, Denzel Washington was not happy with that.

  • @DuncanHennessy and Daniel too.

  • I love it how all the nominated actors were happy he won! Even they know he is a great actor!

  • GOT DAMN LMAO! Morgan Freeman has to be 102 years old. He was like 80 there haha

  • tom cruise winner ;)

  • DDL is so sexy,Also he's an amazing actor.

  • Wonder why Denzel is shaking his head =( And robin williams tash oh my lord!

  • I just love the way he walks, talks, and looks. DDL is the complete package. Plus he is humble and a gentleman.

  • 1:59 Lol at Denzel Washington in the background shaking his heaad

  • @bretrosexual Nice. Didnt catch that at all.

  • Some very good actors in it that year

  • everyone is just superbly happy because that piece of shit tom cruise didnt win. ****power at house goes out, family disappears off the face of the earth***** really tho, DDL is a fucking god

  • Give Daniel Day Lewis a choice role and he turns into GOLD, for the studio and for himself. The most talented actor on the planet today...hands down....brilliant. I want to see more of him and soon.

  • Morgan Freeman is so happy for him , watched an interview with Morgan and his saying that the performance of DDL is the greatest of all time , hard to argue.

  • 1:32 I have never seen actors being so happy that someone else won.

  • Everyone look so happy to see Day-Lewis get this award :)

  • @Mr01001010 you know you're not straight

  • I love how enthusiastic Kenneth Branagh and Morgan Freeman are when DDL wins the award.

  • One of the best performances ever.

  • He is absolutely beautiful! So sexy. I love the long hair, he should wear it like that all the time. He was great in The Last of the Mochians. His kissing scenes were breathtaking.

  • what a great list of performances, all of the nominees were terrific. But I'm glad daniel day lewis won!

  • LEGEND!

  • Why does Morgan Freeman look as happy as if he had won it ?

  • He's so patient and well spoken. What an amazing and versatile actor.

  • god he was handsome!!!!

  • He looks like he could be a character from Harry Potter.

  • oh dear god he is hot

  • @PartyGirlDNM get a room

  • The real life, walking and talking- pussy magnet.

  • 1:29 Proves how good Daniel is of an actor when all the other nominees went crazy when they heard his name

  • i see this actor on GANGS OF NEW YORK is amazing i think is great

  • Daniel Day Lewis is both Louis and Lestat, Sirius Black, and more.

  • I've never seen the other nominees' reactions be so explosively enthusiastic for the winner. DDL is great.

  • Not to mention Gangs of New York...he was brilliant in that!

  • see this Gentlemen? Good...... now search "Bill the Butcher" and youll see ART.

  • @freddydahlgoldstein CUT IT OUT. Daniel Day Lewis not Jewish and how the hell has he been discriminated against???

Also, considering Hollywood is basically run by Jews, you are in no right to say that Jews are discriminated against there.

  • A couple of years later he won an Oscar for his right foot...

  • Daniel Day Lewis is the best actor working. He totally consumes his characters and brings them to life

  • Dustin Hoffman wins playing a disabled person in 1988...

Daniel Day-Lewis wins playing a disabled person in 1989...

Jeremy Irons wins playing a alleged murderer in 1990...

    what happened to the streak?

  • @MichaelChapman18 Robert De Niro was robbed.

  • @freddydahlgoldstein piss off with your propaganda. hes about as jewish as my left foot.

  • @Hashpotato

Then your left foot is "Jewish"..Daniel's mom was Jewish. his grandfather was the Jewish film executive, MIchael Balcon. Daniel was teased in school for being Jewish when a newspaper article about his dad came out and stated the background of his dad's wife...Daniel's Jewish mother Jill Balcon...This ain't propaganda.

  • @ShannonSam1 Daniel Day-Lewis is Agnostic with Jewish Ancestry like Bill Maher !

  • DDL would have made for a good James Bond, when they were replacing Dalton in 1994. Brosnan sucks.

  • DDL deserved to win, but that was a heck of a year for nominees.

  • finally had the chance to see My Left Foot and realized mr. Lewis can do anything w/ a touch of badass attitude. if he had to play the role of a calculator, he will somehow make into oscar gold

  • From his interviews and his movies, this man seems to be the finest actor and human being I have come across in my life. You are quite blessed, Sir.

  • Sorry there should be a seperate award for best actor playing a disabled character...it seems to be a shoe in to get the main award for playing someone disabled.

  • he looks so different her compared from the movie . . just wow . .

  • Quite a strong year for Lead Actors, something similar expected in Feb 2012 as well...

Daniel Day-Lewis is, quite simply, the Marlon Brando of our generation, the greatest of our time (if Brando was never there, the greatest of all time, perhaps). The reactions of all the other nominees is so genuine and pleasing, as if they themselves had bet some money on him to win. You can tell that he doesn't take awards too seriously, so calm and collected. Wonder when his next film is going to come out?

  • daniel day lewis the greatest actor ever.

  • i gotta agree with one of the former top comments. I've never seen every nominee more joyful for another to win the award

  • yea I cant see how he does parts like Gangs of NY and There Will Be Blood and manage to look so mean and scary when in reality he is nothing like that at ALL. Thats a true actor.

  • @Mr01001010 you said it!

  • Jodie Foster is sexy as hell, but she's a lesbian.

Daniel Day-Lewis is sexy as hell, but I'm straight.

    Ah, cruel world.

  • @DuncanHennessy No she isn't and no your not.

  • @DuncanHennessy Actually, she's bisexual. But nevermind... xD

  • WTF?!!?WHERE'S HIS WHEELCHAIR?

  • god jodie foster is so aweosome

  • Daniel is beautiful. And I like that he can play these intense characters, but whenever he speaks out of character he seems like the most gentle, poetic man.

  • Everyone nominated knew DDL should win. There's no animosity when it's announced.

  • in some odd angles, he looked kinda like Christian Bale

  • Please, can someone write what he said? I'm Italian and I don't understand perfectly english. Great Daniel, the best to me.

  • @Smaruglio - He said: "You've just provided me with the makings of one hell of a weekend in Dublin. [Audience laughter] I shared Christy's life for a while with a remarkable young actor called Hugh O'Connor. [Applause] For everyone involved in the film, all our desire to make the film, all the strength that we needed, all the pleasure that we took in making the film, came from Christy Brown. (continued)

  • @sublymenoyse

    Thank you very much!

  • @Smaruglio - "When he was alive, he needed very little encouragement to make his voice heard. Now he needs a little more. And I'm truly grateful to you. In honouring me with this award, you're encouraging Christy to carry on making his mark. Thank you very much indeed."

  • i just got the chills watching this. so much genuine love for this man & his art

  • He's GORGEOUS! The only thing I saw him in was Gangs of New York and he def wasn't stylin there! He just jumped to the very TOP of my obsession list. Sorry to the rest of ya. Whoooaaa

  • Damn-he's GORGEOUS!!!! The only thing I saw him in was Gangs of New York and he wasn't stylin there! Need to pay lots more attention now! He's now at the top of my official obsession list. The others have dropped a notch. He deserves it! Whoaaa

  • man, i'm drooling...he's so sexy!

  • Oh my God, I love his voice. He's all handsome and incredibly talented. Love him. Just love him.

  • Just look at the reaction of his fellow nominees.

They know how much he deserved it.

  • aahh what a humble, gentle and talented man.

I think the fact that all the other nominees cheered that hard for him shows how well he is respected!

  • He is so humble! I love him sdjfkfjfsfff.

  • Awesome hair!

  • His hair is awesome here.

  • tdah.

  • i half expected someone to throw a knife at him haha presumely leanardo?

  • Can we get him to play Dracula? PLEASE!

  • Holy fuck. Those performances? In that one year? They make today's actors look really bad.

  • @witt19800 agreed.

  • oy! daniel kicks bloody bollocks

  • Simply one of the greatest performances in film history.

  • Robbin Williams moustache is almost as epic as bill the butcher's:)

  • VERY good lineup that year. They all deserved it.

  • Hey, does anyone know what music starts to play from 1:35? Many thanks.

  • It's as if all the other nominees saw a soccer goal at the World Cup when they said Daniel Day Lewis' name.

  • Hey, does anyone know what music starts to play from 1:35? Lots of thanks

  • what the heck is she wearing???

  • Only yesterday I wrote on my FB wall that movie "My Left Foot" made me cry with happiness. As someone, who was born with cerebral palsy, I say that this movie is truly inspiring. As for Daniel, I would hug him. We all know he is amazing, but he has totally won me over with that movie. He was "Bill the Butcher" in "Gangs of New York", but actually his nickname could be "Daniel the Brilliant". :)

  • he is so sexy. i cant stand it.

  • he was so handsome. still is. one of the most sexiest men ever. i know it sounds cheezy

  • the fuck's with the gloves on Jodie Foster?

  • @tma291 actually that is kind of funny you say that... who knew several years later he would be playing Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's movie 'Lincoln'. I bet you he wins an Oscar for that performance. It should be released 2012.

  • Daniel Day Lewis performance in my Left Foot was the best ever I saw on screen. I was impressed with Sean Penn in I am Sam, F. Murray Abaraham in Amadeus, James Dean in East of Eden, Johnny Depp in Dead Man. But Lewis' performance was incomparable. An actor would yet to come up with a performance that could at least level up with Lewis in my Left Foot. I doubt if anyone could surpass it. It was brilliant, amazing, powerful... I can't even find the right word to describe it.

  • Have you ever noticed that in all the roles he's played to acclaim, Daniel Day Lewis is NEVER as hansome as he is in real life!

  • @Raidmasterprod true. and that is one of the things i love about him- he is not trying to sell his looks like a lot of other actors do. he gives us pure act. but still, he cant hide how sexy he is. too sexy. much sexier than all those sexy wannabes in hollywood.

  • @Raidmasterprod true

  • Have you ever noticed that in all the roles he's played to acclaim, Daniel Day Lewis is NEVER as hansome as he is in real life

  • shit i almost cried

  • What a GORGEOUS man !

  • @jujujujuparisxx isn't him?

  • @jujujujuparisxx isn't he?

  • I hope he will his 3rd Oscar for his role in Lincoln!

  • @rexcrossnet It's funny, that shot of him in My Left Foot that they showed when announcing the nominees made him look kinda like Lincoln only without the hat.

  • Ever since the Crucible, I can't see him being Daniel but John Proctor, "BUT THIS IS MY NAME!"

  • Its so nice to see such a humble and succinct acceptance speech. Giving credit to those who have helped without acknowledging everyone on the planet.

  • LOL nice shoulder pads

  • @queekers lol, it made her look like a big person with a small head

  • pfff Tom Cruise really got fuked that year, poor guy having his best performance in the same year Daniel Day-Lewis put out a film...(and i m not kiddin' lol)

  • I know its already been said, but it is so moving to see how overjoyed the other nominees were for him when he won.

  • Man of class, humility and grace.

  • Now that is what i call a SPEECH.... Look at the speeches of the now: more time, less sense!

  • How base to nominate Tom Cruise for anything EVER. He's not worthy to be in the company of the other nominees. I have NEVER believed any of his characters. Instead, it's just watching the arrogant dweeb being his boring self, Tom Cruise, pretending to be someone. There's nothing artistic about the films he's in. That's why I think the Academy Awards is a joke. The Academy selects bubble-gum mainstream pop LOSER movies and performers in the company of the better films and performances.

  • Wow! One of few times that all 5 nominees turned up!!

  • Jodie Foster looks EXACTLY the same right now...

  • Born on the 4th of July, Driving miss Daisy and My Left Foot...wow what a year!!

Any other year Cruise or Freeman would have been a shoo in!

  • Lewis is simply a brilliant actor. The best in my opinion, by a country mile!

  • Bravo MAESTRO !!!

  • why was robin williams dressed like he was attending a rennaissance faire?

  • Richly deserved award.

And a good speech too. Short and to the point!

  • muito bom!!! (brazil)

  • 2:00 Denzel in the backround, " I cant believe this motha fucka, he did it, he really did, my nigga"

  • @SkipandDill lol I read it in his voice

  • @SkipandDill lmaooooo

  • I remember that night, Tom had this look "I'm gonna win/everybody knows this one's mine/I'm gonna win," then, blam.

Oh, well, he really was amazing in Born on the Fourth.

  • @nasnek Watch Gandhi

  • D-Day Lew is the shit

  • him or denzel will be the first 3x oscar winner

  • @packdude182 Erm... Jack Nicholson? Unless you mean 3 Leading Actor oscars in which case fair enough

  • @packdude182 Jack Nicholson has three oscars.

  • he will be the 1st to win 3 oscars even though deniro or pacino shouldve already done it

  • If you look at his second oscar win 19 years later, he looks like he hasn't aged a day.

  • Susan Boyle at 2:00

  • @Ricnasty77 lol....LOL

  • He did a great acting job in the movie Left Foot. I think it was a very hard acting job as Christy Brown and Daniel Day Lewis did the part magnificently. I'm sure the real Christy Brown appreciated him doing his life story. Two great men, Daniel Day Lewis and Christy Brown. R.I.P. Christy Brown. Daniel Day Lewis good luck in your future performance.

  • Anyone else think he could play a badass vampire?

  • @hoodmatix me

  • In my opinion, he's not an actor, he's a monster. I think everytime he's on a new movie, they should hand him the oscar directly...that would be fair enough. Daniel just kills it for the others. He's bloody perfect!

  • @Lilimacca Strangely, he's been nominated 4 times, and has won only twice...he won for 'My Left Foot' and 'There Will Be Blood', and lost out for 'In the Name of the Father' and 'Gangs of New York'...if it was in my hands, he would've won 4/4

  • Daniel Day-Lewis' performances aren't just performances; they're experiences.

  • never seems to let down British nor Irish, my favourite actor Daniel Day Lewis

  • It is so refreshing to see someone accept this award with so much class, so much dignity and intelligence. That alone separates this amazing talent from the field.

  • That's a very unique collection of Nominees; Shakespearean, Comedic, Action-Hero, etc.

  • he so damn poised!! it's his first oscar, he's brilliant

  • what the... susan boyle on 2:00 only a little younger

  • Whoa, Jodie.

    I'm likin' the linebacker shoulderpads.

  • Actually he went full retard...

    AND WON!

  • @3296856

He did not go full 'retard'...Have you even seen this movie? Cerebral Palsy is not a mental disorder...its neurological.

  • Daniel Day Lewis: Acts like a God. Claps like a mad man!!

  • The Oscars were so ugly back then. Look at that room, holyyy.

  • The best part of this is that the other nominees were so happy and clearly knew not upset about losing because they knew that the winner deserved the award. If only we could go back to a time like that...

  • 1:55 - Morgan: that's my boy!

  • classy

  • i hate her voice!

  • This guy is the best. I mean truly the best actor alive, and by a fairly large margin. Additionally he is an extremely classy and humble guy.

  • He deserved this reward one of the best performances I have ever witnessed.

  • when did Christy die?

  • @kid66625 Christ died on September 7, 1981. You may not believe but I'm equal. Typing with my left foot too. The difference is that I walk and he walked. Mary according to the brothers of Christ, was an alcoholic and prostitute. It took the death of Christ. If this is true not know. But left in a biography written by one of his brothers. The movie made people know the Cerebral Palsy. Michel, Porto Alegre / RS Brazil

  • @michelinacio Do you mean Christy?

  • there's nothing sexier than broad, pointy shoulders on a woman.

  • @clocks05 An attempt at humor I suppose

  • @acebunny17 no country for old men lol

  • @clocks05 don't forget white gloves (?)

  • Man, the Oscars looked so small and intimate then.

  • Those shoulders. What were we thinking back then?

  • they are all ecstatic that he won. every one of the nominees gets a huge smile and claps like crazy. they knew he deserved it.

  • Best. Performance. Ever.

  • Wow I don't think I've seen every other nominee look thrilled that some else won.

  • @cyberlucy yeah, why were they all so happy???
