you hear sly's bed creek in as he sings this masterpiece.. meanin that that is all he had to do while recordin riot... and groupies and massive amounts of drugs
For me, this song gives sound to the feelings one feels when one has tried to do the best one can and chit still don't work. The way he crush grooves the keyboard notes about mid-way song is devastatingly nasty. I love Sly. Perry Cox TU 4 this post.
JUST DONT LISTEN TO IT SLY AINT THE ONLY ONE WHO MESSED HIS LIFE OFF ON DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YET HE IS STILL A GENIUS!!!! U COMPUTER CRITICS GET ON MY DAMN NERVES NEVER NOTHING POSITIVE TO SAY!!!!!! SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dirtiest blues... I've never heard a bass so full of woe n groove... everything about this album makes things slow down to a certain pace n jus GROOOVE...sly is almost incomprehensible on certain tracks... a total reflection of what was goin on in his mind and the outside world...
Yes, it is a very druggie tune, just as I said, most of "There's a Riot Goin On" is the best album to crash to heavy coke usage to. Since Sly was a basehead, I imagine he knew those sensations all too well, and he captures the inescapable depression of crashing from a certain white stimulant after your supply has run out. Still, this is a superb album, and I mean every statement I have made about "Just Like a Baby" being druggy, spacey, and world weary as a compliment.
Aww man such a wonderful, soulful tune. I love playin this bassline! I believe Larry played the bass on this track, though not sure this was Greg on drums. You can hear Larry's and Freddie's background vocals here.
Yes this song carry's a certain type of melancholy undertone, but far from ramshackle. Rhythically this song/album carries a style of funk unheard of in urban music until it's release. The singing utilizes what's called in some church circles as "Dr. Watts." It incorporates more moaning than actual words. It helped make Al green, The Ohio Players, The Barkays, George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic and a host of other urban/black music groups. It's simply too "soulful" for somes taste.
@michaeljulius119 This is one of my favorite tracks on the album, but I guess I've always felt it was performed about 15-20% too fast. I imagine no producer would ever allow a dirge as I'm describing to be a second track -- especially from a performer previously known for more upbeat, life-affirming music. Then again, Sly Stone produced the album.... I'm just disappointed he didn't go all the way (with a slower performance), since it sounds like he was already digging his musical grave.
This is arguably the most haunting, depressed, and ramshackle track from 1971's classic, haunting, depressed, and ramshackle album "There's a Riot Goin' On", or as I like to call it "the best album ever to crash to heavy coke usage to".
this music is above a critique from youtubers this is pioneering monumental and very historical american music. long live sly !!!!!!!!

This song, like most of Sly's songbook, is beyond all criticism. It cannot be touched or harmed.

Clearly the druggiest tune on this album.
Amazingly chill. And listen to that groove on 1:24 - 1:38!
That is like the funkiest, stankiest slow groove on earth. I just keep playing that little part over and over :P

Lot of music critics ... including me
ramshackle? disappointed? digging his musical grave?
that's sad....
i guess for me it's a soulful groove from beginning to end....
raw & smooth at the same time...melodic.... harmonizing....
mmmmm mmmmm MMMMMM.... the kind that makes u close ur eyes and escape into it - the kind that when it's over... it leaves u wanting more
with the windows down in the SUV this one pours from the speakers & subwoofers with that heavy bass... cause that's how i roll
