Two strokes have almost twice the power of a equivilant size four stroke because it fires twice as much so the piston will stay at higher rpms under load.
Truth: 4-stroke MX bikes last 30-60 hours before needing a major overhaul. 2-strokes will go 200 hours on a top end, then replace the piston and keep going. Performance 2-stroke boat engines are known to go over 6000 hours. Or equivalent to 200,000+ miles in a car with a lead foot.
2T: Lighter, more powerful, more torque, less maintenance, more reliability and now with DI lower emissions and better fuel economy.
I'm an engine builder and have my own company. 4-stroke more reliable is a myth launched by the engine companies. 2-stroke if used good quality oil and good carburator settings it will run forever, just as long or longer than a 4-stroke. 2-strokes got the bad reputation, cause mostly no garage knew how to set them right.
Two stroke have their purpose but a 4 stroke will out live a 2 stroke anyday. 2 stroke are great for weed eaters and mowers but ask anyone in the Boat and Motor bike industry that 4 stroke is the way to go. Cleaner ,cheaper ,smoother and 10 times more reliable
When me and my friends were out and drove moped. I where the only one with a 4-stroke engine. And when all the engines were cold. They where faster than me. But when my engine was warm, they didn´t had a chanse.
@rangerssteamtoys 2 strokes are in fact easier to start after time. your precious 4 strokes special valve wear out and this makes it lose its over rated compression and makes it really tough to start. the only way to make a 4 stroke run with a 2 stroke is make it bigger and heavier or make it turn crazy rpms which wear it out sooner
@wapperott Dear wapperott that's because you can't add too much oil for the 4-stroke while oil isn't mixed to the fuel. Oil pump distributes the oil to the right places with pressure and putting too much oil would have just the same result as putting too much water in a cup, the container would just overflow. But if there would occur a leakage of oil in the combustion chamber it would result the same as putting too much oil into the 2-stroke engines fuel tank! And I do apologize my poor english.
btw im using 2 stroke engine on my bike.. how much must i put the oil for per liter ? im using premix. n btw how do i know whether increase frition or damage my engine.. any idea? thank you.
It must clarify about to mix gasoline and lub oil. It is not sufficient enough just mix up lub oil could be represent lub oil go into cylinder to cooling cylinder wall. However lubrication system is different way and different function with gasoline. Lub Oil must changed periodically to maintain crank shaft, crank pin, connecting rod, pin piston, cylinder wall, cam shaft, rocker arm. That 's why we need Top ring, oil ring, scrap ring cylinder to change periodically.
your first explanation is totally correct. But at the last part of your explanation is totally different thinks however gasoline and lubrication is different system. Cylinder wear caused by scrap ring of cylinder not function properly so that rest lub oil burn together therefore lubrication system not running properly to cylinder wall. Lub oil oil running beginning from crank shaft, crank pin bearing, connecting rod and cylinder wall return to oil pan with metal babitt. It must be clarify.
2 stroke are no worse than 4 strokes in the pollution range. Its just that the companys wanted to sell more bikes to more people cause, how many people do you know who can ride a 2 stroke.
i always ran johnny/Rude v4 90-115s on everything i had, and i loved them,, but i got a new yamy F115 last year, and man, its such a nice smooth engine, its nice havin an outboard thats Quiter than an inboard,, Great engine, wish i got the 150 but the price was right, so no complaints
4 strokes are eaiser to start than 2 strokes, the have special parts dedicated for intake and exhaust. 4 strokes do not have higher compression than 2 strokes. 4 strokes run longer and save money which is great for everyday boaters. 4 strokes may be a heavier but they make up for that in torque and power. Try to get a briggs 10 hp upt to 7000 rpm. then try that with a weed eater or a mercury 9.9 2 stroke.
@squiertom MY ASS dodge tomahawk goes 64km/h in 2 seconds and it have dodge viper engine u fag and its 8800cc so stop lieng fag and u cant reach 32 hp on a 70cc cylinder
@squiertom thats true.. mine 125CC bike 2 stroke beats with 135CC 4 stroke.. hahaha... for 4 stroke their pickup are great.. but for 2 stroke we must play at our own jugdement.
@squiertom btw im using 2 stroke engine on my bike.. how much must i put the oil for per liter ? im using premix. n btw how do i know whether increase friction or damage my engine.. any idea? thank you.
A 2 stroke of the same displacement as a fourstroke produces far more power.nobody ever compares engines of the same displacement. compare 2 similar size mx bikes. example
2001 cr500 2 stroke. power 65bhp 6000rpm
compression 6.7-1
2001 crf 450 with 500kit , power 57bhp at 9000rpm
compression 12.3:1
So 4 strokes do not have higher compression right? perhaps in outboard apps but therefor they must have much more displacement and weight because they are far less powerful.
Four strokes produce more power, the use of 2 strokes is due to the weight factor. less moving parts, (valves etc) however the 2 stroke will not run as economicaly as a four stroke.
To prove a point, how many 2 stroke formula 1 cars are there ? (none) Boat engines are best in 2 stroke form due to the lighter weight, cost and application,
Small 4 stroke engines have a realitively low compression so they are easy to start, also quiet and no need for mixing gas, no smoke. 2 strokes are noisy, smoke and have little power there only up side is that they rev. 4 strokes can be geared up to match 2 strokes RPM.
Generally 4-strokes run higher compression (making them less reliable) and 4-STROKES REV HIGHER. Two Stroke Shop produces a 500cc 3cyl that revs to 10,500rpm, a 600cc 4-stroke makes a few less horsepower and revs to 15,000+rpm. The 2-stroke also makes 20lb-ft more torque(150% more). Less compression is why the 2-strokes have such short kick starters compared to 4-strokes.
@TheOfficialKC What is this 4 Stroke engine that can run 15,000 rpm's in???? I would really like to see that since a stock 4 stroke car redlines at around 6,000 or so and a high end crotch rocket around 10,000 plus or minus. what are they putting that 600 cc in?
@drjjlj 600cc 4-strokes in the suporsport street bikes actually redline above 16,000rpm and make peak hp at about 13,000rpm. The 1000cc superbikes redline above 13,000rpm and make peak hp at about 12,000rpm. Yes, these are the current crotch rockets. The new BMW S100RR redlines at 14,200rpm.
A normal 4-stroke car will redline at 6,000rpm. A Ferrari will redline at 8,000rpm+. The Caparo T1 has a redline at about 12,000rpm.
4 stroke has a better compression stroke....and will deliver more power for 1 cycle then the 2 stroke does...the 2 stroke just adds the power because it revs twice as much as 4 stroke (Theortically..)
and another important fact...4 stroke ARE WAY MUCH MORE SILENT....WAY MUCH MORE...the suzuki added an exhaust porthole above the water line just so u will hear it working when idle..otherwise u would think the engine switched off..
When my dad and i went out looking for a new engine we started with four strokes because of the quiet, smoothness, and cleaner exhaust. What did we find? All those were wrong. They are very shaky engines, they are NOT quiet and with fuel injection the two-strokes are as clean. Plus the two-strokes are way lighter. We got a two-stroke.
I've noticed that four-strokes seem quiter at an idle, but when you give it the berries, it lets out a much deeper note, which carries much further than a two-stroke. I've also noted that in the motocross world, four-stroke bikes tend to have much larger mufflers in the attempt to keep the noise down, yet they still seem louder at distance. When a 2-stroke goes by, you may think "damn, that was kinda loud.' But when a 4-stroke goes by, you think, 'damn, that was loud AND it hurt!'
u must realize that in a four stroke the compression stroke happens in a larger displacement while in a 2 stroke engine some of that compression is lost due to the thin reef valves...the evinrude got slower and slower as more people went on board the boat...while the suzuki nearly kept the same speed even with near 9 people on board..
2 stroke gets the power from the added revs ---> this means more wear and tear in the bore from the rings
this is all marketing...everybody is changing nowadays to four stroke engines....that is a fact...and i dont think most engineers are stupid enough to manufacture them...
i have worked with both evinrude etech 115 and suzuki df90...i work in a watersports lido...
2-stroke + direct injection and oil injection is the best. more power, more torque, better fuel mileage, cleaner emissions, cheaper, and as reliable as a four-stroke.
hey two stroke are coming up in the world they got fuel injection now. there lighter, cheap to make and fixed, faster, stronger, and highly reliable. a 2 stroke and a four stroke of the size, the 2stroke will put out twice the power.
Why 2-stroke is better than 4-stroke? You've gotta be kidding me and the reasons given are laughable. "Never have to change oil"<-- well having to ADD oil at EVERY refill is less cost effective and 2-strokes pollute more in 1 hour than a 4-stroke does in a YEAR.
"2-strokes pollute more in 1 hour than a 4-stroke does in a YEAR" is blatantly an exaggeration! Have you got a reliable scientific source that ludicrous figure?
you can buy one in 2007 depending on the manufacture, i think yamaha is last to sell small two stroke engines. other then that its a new 2006 model. i just picked up a new 06 9.9 mercury 2 stroke. one of the last of its kind.
now a evinrude e-tec is the only 2 strokes still in production and has left emmissions of co2 floralcarbons and carbon monixide as it may not get as good of fule economy it is pretty close to a 4 stroke the yamaha v-max 250 went 2.5 miles past the 250 e-tec(2 stroke) and the mercury 250hp verado went 5 miles and the e-tec has more torque (what u want for a boat motor) so there make your choice on the better engine
I don't think you can even buy a 2-stroke outboard in 2007. Emissions and lake polution due to all that oil going out the exhaust and into the lake. This must be a very old video.
If you had a, lets say two 300cc engines, one 2 stroke, one 4 stroke, the 2 stroke would put out much more power. if you foul a plug adjust your mixture! and you dont need to replace it just take some sand paper to it.
I can't believe how much 2 strokers want to make out of having to change the oil on a 4-stroke. BIG DEAL! It takes me 10 minutes on my Yamaha and costs $25 using Yamaha oil and filter. The money I save on fuel consumption, two stroke oil, and not having to replace fouled spark plugs, more than makes up for it.
Suzuki 2 stroke CCI lubrication pumps oil directly to where it is needed. Instead of having and oil pump that squirts oil into the intake manifold it is sqirted into the crancase directly at the main bearings, it then mixes with the incoming fuel charge and is ditrubted from there to the rest of the engine.
