... if you listen to the theme in the early b/w shows, Curt's vocal track is the same, but the "PJ" shout by the girls is very different, it's much louder and not as high pitched. Then of course Billie and Bobbie Jo were played by different actresses at that time, so maybe it was that lineup that did it, and when the lineup changed in season 3 and slightly again in season 4, it could have been that later lineup.
Still it could have been studio girl singers that did the chant in the early shows.
The shout of "PETTICOAT JUNCTION!" in this version of the theme song, sounds like Elly May Clampett! Is that by chance Donna Douglas's voice we hear? I'm not sure who does the chant in the TV version, I know the themes writer Curt Massey sang the
TV version, but who did the PJ shout. I'm not sure if it's the actresses who played the Bradley girls or if it's studio singers. Perhaps both. Maybe in the b/w shows it studio singers, then in the color shows it's the Bradley girls themselves..
The original installment of the series "Television's Greatest Hits" has this version of the theme. (Not performed by Lester & Earl, but by a studio session band that does a close approximation of it.) The actual theme, I believe, was sung by Mike Minor, who played Betty Jo's boyfriend Steve on the show.
Well, even though it does sound a lot like Mike Minor who performs the TV version, it's actually sung by Curt Massey, who also wrote it. I do think Mike Minor could have done a great version, however.
Him and Meredith MacRae were great singers.
Once Mike and Meredith joined the series, singing became a recurring theme. By the final two years, there was singing in about every 3rd episode
@cmulwee001 Well, you learn something new every day here. The singer sounded a lot like Mike Minor. Oh well . . . I agree about the singing on that show. They started singing quite often at that point. I remember him and either Meredith MacRae or Linda Kaye Henning doing a duet on the Beatles' "When I'm 64" from that period ("Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" would have been funnier, in my opinion).
I could be wrong. It's possible that Curt wrote it,but Mike sang it, 'cause it DOES sound like him. BTW did you notice that when the show switched from black and white to color the theme song was 'remixed'? The main vocal is the same, but the girl background chant of the title is different, in the early(b&w) shows it was lower pitched, and somewhat more pronounced. Do you think it's the Bradley girls(the various lineups) doing that, or is it studio singers?
@cmulwee001 LOL - imagine some hip-hop performer going "OK, Petticoat Junction . . . REMIX!!!" Sorry, I'm just a silly bastard. Re the backing vocals: You got me, partner. As a kid I never paid that close attention to the song; I was waiting to see the three "naked" girls poke their heads up from the water tower. Could be the various Bradley girls, though. You had two different girls prior to Meredith MacRae, and another girl before Lori Saunders. Linda Kaye was the only girl in her role.
You're right about two different Billie Jo's before Meredith MacRae , and one Bobbie Jo before Lori Saunders.
If you look at Jeannine Riley's early portrayal of the eldest Bradley girl, it's virtually an entirely different character from Meredith MacRae's version. Meredith, the Billie Jo that most people are familiar with, is a soft spoken, warm hearted young lady who aspires to be a singer. Riley's original is more of a ditzy "Dumb Blonde" type...To Be Cont..
Part 2.. I only vaguely remember Gunilla Hutton's Billie Jo, but i think it was very much like Jeannine's. Meredith Mac Rae changed the character entirely, and I LOVED it whenever she would sing!
Pat Woodell's Bobbie Jo is okay, but she lacks personality. Lori Saunders, I think ,was better.
Linda Kaye Henning was as you said the only girl to playe Betty. But even she evolved over the years.
Early shows, she's a tomboy. later shows; she's all womanly, especially after marrying Steve.
@cmulwee001 Yeah, Gunilla Hutton's Billie Jo was basically like her later character on "Hee Haw", a beautiful dumb blonde type. Interesting how she and Jeannine Riley were both on this show and in the original first season cast of "Hee Haw" as well. Linda Kaye Henning may have gotten her part purely based on her being the daughter of Paul Henning, the show's creator (like Tori Spelling on "Beverly Hills 90210" in the '90s).

Great song, but the transfer to Youtube needs some work. You can hardly hear Earl or Josh Graves and the snare drum is too loud.
