The shaders are good, but your biggest problem is the modelisation ! a car need class A surfaces - the reflects on the shapes had to be perfect. For exemple, in the front of your car, there are some deformations you can see at 32". For people who are in the 3D automotive world, this is horrible. If you goal are not these people, it could be OK, but if they are, be sure you will have the comment ;-)
I was just watching some blender videos for have some ideas about the software capabilities and then i found this. How much time have you spend for designing the entire project ?
Wow. This looks closely to reality! I am working on something similar and I would like to have some materials like there. Where you get them from or its your own?
This is the power of blender, that makes me wonder this: Who need to spend more than $3500 in 3DS Max, when you can do something like this in an Open Source Software??
I Like it - only thing that I really did not like, was the tunnel drive through at the end. Why? The camera driveby... just looks not good in my opinion.
I love how you almost tease the viewer with the mesh at the beginning. Like: Yeah. It's amazing. I'm amazing. You think this is a real car? Think again.
that's impossible!!! you made this with blender... the same blender that's free for everyone to use... OMG.... this is the best thing ive ever seen...... man that's awesome....
@jamin3d Hmm, ok then. I noticed the black dots on the side of the car - that happens occasionally in yafaray but never heard that it can happen in blender internal render. However the render times are too slow, i don't know why.
@wolfshark1 He mentions some render issues in the blog. I'm not aware of BI having any black areas like this either.
As far as render times, yeah the times are too slow. I'm guessing his machines must be slow/older systems since my single i5-750 renders 1 frame in 100 seconds (full 1280x720, not the 960x540 his sample file was set to-- that took only 60 seconds). This is on 2.5a2, btw.
Say he had to render 1800 frames to get all he needed, at 30fps, that's only 50 hours for my 1 machine.
@jamin3d I had real motion blur enabled on a lot of the scenes, hence the extra rendering time I guess...
Also, I optimized the scene a lot for publishing, so render time decreased accordingly. Not to mention that 2.5a2 is faster than 2.5a1 that I was using for the animation.
Fantastic stuff, Sire! If you do end up not being lazy, do change the part where the vehicle drives, and render without the artifacts, but I myself wouldn't even think about bothering with that due to the INSANE rendering time this must have taken! What sort of a rig do you have?
What Computer do you use to render this? My PC needs about 2 hours for one image (on blender 2.49, I know 2.5 is faster, but it isn't working properly on my PC... )
Are those black dots the artifacts you get wit HDRI+AO in 2.5? They drive me crazy and I can't find how avoid them (other than rendering the reflecitions without AO and then render the AO separated)
Lacquer seems to me unrealistic. The ride from 0:28 to 0:34 is unrealistic too, it is like on rails, maybe thats because of camera movement? Don't know...
@qbam You are right. The vehicle physics is pretty bad, I thought it looked okay when I did the pre-vis. But when the final rendering (which took ages!) is done, I am too lazy to change it.
Beautiful BMW 3er + beautiful 3D model = hollly shet!

@leonidhaimov Go to the mikepan page (in the video description) and you can get the Blender file and render by yourself

@leonidhaimov Blender is capable of much more than people think. Just because something is free, does not make it crap.
WeegeePerson 1 year ago
@WeegeePerson Well yeah I'm just saying that I didn't know that blender can have that good graphic... But still 3d max rules xD
leonidhaimov 1 year ago
@leonidhaimov 3DS Max doesn't have a game engine nor does it have a physics engine OR the ability to edit videos. :P
Besides, the software is not as important as the artist. (you can't do good with crappy software like anim8tor, but you know what I mean)
WeegeePerson 1 year ago
@WeegeePerson But 3D Max + C++ = game engine :P

Yes, the black dots are definitely artifacts. I was using an optimized build, that could be why. But 2.5 Alpha 1 seems to have fixed it.
