I consider Venom as the father the genre' name and lyrical theme, not music, for black metal. Possessed also is the father the genre name, but overall music is not death metal, at least, for me. But even for that aspect, there also is a band called ONSLAUGHT, who also had a song called Death Metal in their 1985 album Power from Hell, the same year as the mighty Seven Churches.

In this way, it is quite clear that DEATH is believed to be the 1st by not only its fans, but also other metal lovers, while possessed is not credicted as the 1st death band even by some of its fan. This is not to say, possessed are not good. They are the kings of that era and influenced the soon to be born death metal genre, along with Sepultura, Sodom, Kreator, Slayer, Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory etc. They all are the foundations of extreme metal. But it is DEATH's Metal.

In fact by the time death came out after the "mantas" "death by metal" demos(at 16) Possessed was still playing the thrash going deathmetal style. Journalists and fans have individually called either the first but really there is none. But musically, mentally and popularly death is the first and i agree its the reason why its called death metal even if its not.
