What brand guitar is Isaac playing in those first shows? It looks like a Jackson. If someone know specifically what brand/make/model he played back then I would appreciate being brought into the loop.
@elurseeknay yeah it is. i thought when i first saw it that it was also the buildings for wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot, which is similar, but the buildings are closer together.
I can't stand all of these comments about people thinking they know what's best for this band's music. They are the band for a reason, and you're the fans for a reason, they know what the hell they're doing and where they want to go. Stop trying to act like you know what's in these guys best interests for making music. They have more than enough great albums to satisfy any fan of theirs, so stop all your whining!
@MrTrinklied i dont agree good news, is fucking amazing lets take foat on out of the equation (even though its modest mouse in essence) the view bukowski and satin in a coffin among the rest are amazing. go mm!!!!!!!!!!!
You can't say those two albums are the best albums in "that time" and not even mention the others honorably. Long Drive is unbelievably good and the ones that came after are good too.
@DannieDorantes idk but u can listen to it anytime u want on youtube just search "modest mouse beta carotene" plus there a video of them playin that live by that gummybearcavity person
i love how at 2:18 its the building from the cover of lonesome crowded west. Do you think they had picked the album cover when this documentary was shot?
What's with MM fans hating on "We Were Dead..."???
It's my least favorite MM album but it's still very solid. The album still has a decidedly MM sound. Is it a bit more radio-friendly??? Sure. After all, It's not like they sold out and started trying to appeal to the mainstream. It just kind of happened that way. In fact, Issac and the rest of MM couldn't care less about having a hit record. Don't be surprised if their next album goes in a different direction.
"um.. i like em a lot.. isaac, um.. used to do the same thing, only like, in my kitchen.. at night.. um, when the neighbors downstairs were trying to sleep.. and umm.. i can sorta appreciate it more now.. that it's like.. not.. in my um, kitchen.. "
i love the old modest mouse but i do i like no ones first and your next more than the ship sank they will hold a special place in my heart they trained my ear to what i listen to now
im a few weeks late but whatever. lol A band isn't going to keep the same sound and attitude towards music forever. Drugs, no drugs, cleaning up, not cleaning up, a band is going to explore and do all kinds of shit. There are bands out there that sound completely different on each album but it all sounds good to me aha
@WeDoNotFear Good example is The Flaming Lips. Every album is way different than the last, but they are still the best (or one of the best) bands out there.
No One's First, And You're Next is one of my favorite Modest Mouse releases. I don't know why people are so shocked and angry and depressed by Modest Mouse's changes.
Seriously, if Modest Mouse had started out as a six member band and in the 2000s they went down to just Isaac, Eric and Jeremiah, people would still complain about how the "new" Modest Mouse wasn't good. If they had done no drugs until 2005 and suddenly Isaac started shooting up, everyone would complain about it.
look to all of those people who say that they "suck" that can go fuck their mother. yea isaac has had some problems but PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES. seriously get over yourself. they are truly poets. his soul is beautiful, yes a little fucked, but still noone can really compete with some like isaac brock.and their new album is just as good as their first. if you truly appreciate them youll love each and everyone one of their songs.
Modest Mouse will never be the same since they cleaned up. Now i for one love this music. their new shit not so much but i saw them live again before they finished their last tour and that shit was amazing because they played only their old music.
Not true, they usually suck when their habits start to consume them. Yet when the band goes through that ''clean'' phase they usually start to fucking blow.
Modest Mouse isnt one entity, hell I saw Eric Judy light up a joint on stage last time i saw them ( sometime in 08 ).
I've been hearing this argument a lot, and some people seem like..straight up angry that Isaac cleaned up his life and therefore the "new music sucks". Frankly, I dont agree. I think it's just different. And I also think that if these "die hard fans" are so damn die hard, they should understand that Isaac was in a really bad place and needed to clean up. I still think theyre music is incredible just in a less obscure way. And i'd frankly rather the music chance than see one of my favorite
modest mouse was sick back in the day and still is ... liked them from the beginning, from long drive to now but yea there old stuff was amazing and whale song is the only song that sounds like there old stuff i wish they sounded like lonesome and before but isaac brock is till a genius and a weird ass =)
that just broke my heart. I miss the old Modest Mouse, the Lonesome Crowded West Modest Mouse. Their new stuff makes me sick, he's lost the raw edge, the charm...
A vast majority of my favorite bands lose their 'raw edge' when they stop doing so many drugs/being alcoholics. I appreciate everyone being happy and sober, but it does put a downer on the music most of the time.
I'm not saying that it isn't good for them as people to be sober and clean. I'm glad that they are happy and clean, it's better for you in so many ways. But it isn't coincidence.
Maybe it has to do with, when they are drunk and drugged they don't give a fuck and just make their music, and when they are sober they end up wanting to please people more than themselves?
@30H13 I'm aware. I was mentioning him for the people that know who he is. I got as precise as I could. But anyone who knows what he looks like would see him and that's all that matters.
i never understand how Isaac get his guitar sound, because he doesnt really use distortion, or a noticable one at least, but it doesnt exatcly sound clean either
I suppose that their lives were also changed once they began to get more attention from the public. The people changed and venues grew larger. I try to understand and like the new stuff, but i feel let down just the same. They shouldn't be afraid to express themselves now, they have so many loyal fans that want to hear what Modest Mouse really has to say.
I need to find a copy of that show, 10/15/97. It is the only Beta Carotene I don't have, and by the sound of it it is the best. I wonder if the makers of this have the raw footage? I gotta contact them.
in the first shot of them playing live, watch jeremiah's head. when he tilts forward, it looks like his whole head dips down into his shirt! haha - optical illusion

Makes me sad to watch this because Modest Mouse use to be so damn cool. But their newest cd really sucked. I wish they would have stopped before "We were dead before the ship even sank"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't know man, they did make it 13 years doing things the way they did and still had a large fan base. All I'm saying is Dashboard is a really gay song compared to something like Dramamine, or Edit the Sad Parts.
Sounds like you're just saying what you expect a 'cool person' to say. When you try just as hard to be 'anti-trendy' as some people try to jump on bandwagons, is there really any difference? Johnny Marr is a perfect compliment to the group and the songwriting and lyrics are as good or better than ever. They have yet to make a bad album, and I wouldn't be surprised if they never did. Florida, Marched into the Sea and Parting of the Sensory are three of their best songs ever.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No your mistaking their "Best Songs Ever" for "Float On" and "Dashboard." After all i wouldn't be "cool" or "hip" if i wasn't supportive of their Mtv popular music videos. It was also really "great" of modest mouse to make their one of their songs onto the same video game as paramore and 30 seconds to mars. If you ask me you couldn't be any cooler than that.
I think it's pretty widely agreed upon that Dramamine and Edit the Sad Parts are better songs than Dashboard...that's no attempt to be 'anti-trendy'.....but their newest CD is good...just different.
