  • Liked this before the video even started. This was one of my absolute favorite rides. It was always breaking down, but I was a big fan of the novel, the movie, and this ride brought it to life for me. I loved studying the ocean, and this was as real as it could get for me when I was a kid. I was so mad when they turned it into some stupid character meeting spot before it became that grotto thing.

  • Btw, it's Ariel, Aquata and Andrina at 2:10

  • Is this one in Florida? because the one in Disneyland closed later than 1994

  • It was fun even if it was 'cheezy' with the fake fish and seaweed.

  • Considering what they can do now it's a shame they didn't revamp this ride.

  • @MAragon1964 well they kind of remade it into a finding nemo ride

  • aw why would they take that away never got to go :( bummer

  • @MrFuzzballman

I went on it a few times when I was a kid.

    You didn't miss much.

Even when I was a kid, I still felt cheated after only seeing the fake looking underwater scenery.

I was hoping there would be something living in the water (like fish), but it was deader than the dead sea in there.

  • I'd be afraid to get trapped in this lol

  • Walt disney wouldve been ashamed that they took this out he said during his incredible life "we only add to the park not tear it down" well i was paraphrasing him

  • Oh my god! this ride is gone!? I remember this ride, I loved science and this ride hooked me good! I rode it like 4 times in 1 day back in . . . god I cant rember. So sad! So sad!

  • so pissed they got rid of it

  • This was one of my favorites as a kid! Long before The Little Mermaid, I was fascinated by mermaids and loved seeing them under the water here!! Watching it now, it seems a bit creepy!! For the poster who doesn't get how it worked.... from my memory, there were literally these submarines at the top of a small "lake" that you climbed into and then walked down stairs to the seating area. I think the sub went down a bit, around the little lake, and then up again. It was cool to kids!!!

  • I like NEVER understood this ride!!! is the ride underground?!?! Like where does it take place, in the back something, as soon as it goes into the cave, does it go in the huge back area?!?! is it filled with water or something? ...

  • You keep riding this and tell yourself, well, this is kinda boring, wish they'd come out with something new... then they get rid of it and the only thing you can ever wish to think is: bring it baaack pleease!

  • I rode that ride many times in the 1970's !

I was just at Disney recently and was heartbroken to find out that the ride was gone.

  • god this brings back so many memories!

  • The same ride still exists in some form: the Nemo Submarine Adventure ride at Disneyland, California.

  • "They closed 20K because a woman had a heart attack in the 80s". Man, I've heard some strange excuses for the Worst Decision Disney Ever Made, but that's a new one to me!

  • @ManEatingSharks no way, i rode this in 1993, so it definitely wasn't closed because of a heart attack in the 80's

  • @lsvtecb18c1 Tell me about it... My last trip on the Nautilus was in August '94. Would be pretty difficult to do if it had been closed in the 80s, huh?

  • i remember this too in the 70s. from what i remember in the early 80s a little old lady died of a heart attack on this ride. thats why it was stopped. even though there was a sign stating if you dont like cramped places or have a phobia dont ride. she did and she died. the family sued disney and they shut the ride down.

  • @ramkidd123 Not true at all, stop spreading BS rumors. It closed because the effects were outdated and it was costly to do maintenance constantly on ride literally built underwater.

  • @Clay3613 But they didn't constantly maintain the ride; this blatantly obvious fact seems to be lost on the Disney fan community 17 years on. They dropped the divers in the water every other night and did a refurbishment every four or so years. It was chopped as a cost-cutting exercise, not as a response to outside factors. And the effects being outdated have nothing to do with it; by that standard, Jungle Cruise (exact same air system) and Small World should also be closed.

  • @ManEatingSharks Jungle Cruise and Small World should also be closed!!?! WHAT! You should be shot, hanged, and drawn and quarterd in plane sight for those coments. And your family and little. . . ARGG! SERIOUSY!!! your a pice of shit!!

  • @aserna32 Yes, of course. I should be killed for expressing a different opinion! If you had actually bothered to read what I had written properly, you would see that I don't actually want Jungle or Small World shut down. I was merely trying to show that the 'outdated tech' argument for closing 20,000 Leagues is wholly invalid.

  • atlantis acually went out when it "rained fire" and the ground shook

aka a meteor shower and an earthquake

  • wow looks kinda scary for a disney ride ya know but it lookks truly amazing

  • Come on! You have one of the clearest videos of the ride on YouTube... upload the full thing!

  • I'm sad my son will never get to see it like we did

  • I always wanted to go on this ride when i was little, but i never will get to now. Thanks for the video!

  • Were the original submarine rides at disneyland and WDW similar?

  • @Glitermagic Yes, they were!!! They were exactly the same.

  • wuz this a legit submarine?

  • It's a nemo ride now.

  • @mounsteres You're thinking of the one in Disneyland, the one in WDW is now a victim of the Fantasyland Expantion.

  • who were the three people obnoxious enough to dislike this

  • @rubyrodriguez6 WDW Operations vets

  • someone told me that they would made an a"tlantis" ride but since the movie didnt made too much sucess ...

  • i never had the oportunitty to ride it . i believed they have a couple of those submarine on the typhon lagoon reef shark atraction

  • Well, the engineers should talk to the accountants before they have an exhibit like this but when I was there at the 5 year anniversary(WDW) this was a highlight. Even though it was mainly for Kids and the Folks I still enjoyed the fantasy and the Sub ride. Sickening to see what happened to it if you search online. I'll tell everyone I know that goes, they used to care about giving the best fantasy experience for your money but now they give you the least possible little fantasy for you buck!

  • It was one of my favorite rides since I love mermaids. I actually cried when I heard that they got rid of it. I still don't know why they did, and it bothers me to think that one of the reasons might have been because it was "cheesy". It wasn't to me. Another one was that kids didn't seem interested in something like that and had never heard of the movie or book the ride was based off of!

  • Thanks for this video; I'm enjoying your whole series. I rode this when I was there in 1993; I was 12, and I must have been one of the last. When I was there in 2002 we noticed that the track appeared to still be under the water, right next to Ariel's Grotto, where Ariel does meet and greets. Hopefully they'll come up with a similar but more advanced version of this ride.

  • Lucky for me I had a chance to ride this in the 70's. As a kid I thought we were really underwater. Well, deep underwater. Shame it had to go. I took the gf and her daughter to WDW over the summer. It was still a blast but I would have liked to have gone on this once more.

  • This was one of my very favorites!! As a kid, I couldn't wait to get on this ride. It was even better at night. Hopefully something just as cool will replace it (although, I seriously doubt it).

  • @lotsabears This ride is gone.

  • so, is the little mermaid ride taking place of it?

  • @GoPlayMW2OrSomething actually their expanding all of fantasyland in this spot but i'm sure the little mermaid ride will be over there in that area somewhere

  • This was shot during the daytime. This ride was creepy as hell at night, when all you had were the lights from the sub to illuminate the outside.

  • But we have a similar ride here in Disney Sea, Japan

  • im 21 im happy i got to ride this ride a good memory

  • I was 2 when this closed.

  • I remember this ride was always broken down, I finally got to go on it before they closed it down for good and it sucked!

  • I remember this. It must have closed right after my first trip to DIsney. I was only 4.

  • Corporate idiots can't seem to keep their mouth shut when it comes to old classic rides. Maybe Captain Nemo ought to sink corprate ships. (ships owned by Disney's high-ups)

  • 2:08 Then what are those? =)

  • lol i went to disney world back in 2000 and i snuck into a storage unot that held the sea spherent its scraed me when i saw it

  • @MattDuesk The sea-serpents were underwater until 2004...

  • I remember this when I was little. The giant squid actually came at the Nautilus, I nearly shit myself.

  • I can't believe they took this ride out and put finding nemo in.

  • @mnm2freak That was what they did at Disneyland. WDW's is much worse: a Pooh Bear playground. They're making up for it by expanding our Fantasyland with a shit ton of goodies, though.

  • @mnm2freak That's the Disneyland version. Although many Disney fans hate that ride for only being a bunch of underwater video screens (and I agree). The WDW version (this one) was replaced with a children's playground called Pooh's Playful Spot.

  • i remember this ride from when i was young, probably around 1978. i didnt make it back to disney world till 1994. Its the old rides like pirates of the caribbean, haunted mansion, swiss family tree house, its a small world, ect. that keep me coming back for the memories. I had looked so forward to riding 20,000 leagues again. It will be missed

  • They changed it to freaking Finding Nemo now -_-

  • @IrishBirdy1 That is Disneyland version. WDW's 20K Leagues was turned into a Winnie the Pooh themed playground.

  • This was one of my favorite rides at Disney. I wish that they hadn't taken it out.

  • This was one of my favorites, too. The video doesn't do it justice, but gives you some idea. What a cool ride!

  • i remember that ride. i was my favorite. I went on it over and over and over. i couldn't have been more than 8yrs old. It was like I actually thought those things were real.

  • I remember visiting WDW for the first time in the 90's...but by that time the ride was gone.

I always wanted to know what was in the "big lake" by Ariel's house, hahaha.

  • This was the coolest ride. I remember riding on it when I was a kid. Shame they took it out.

  • I remember this ride! I was there in 1994 right before they closed it. Honestly, I'm glad they did because the subs were getting so old and rickety-looking that I was scared to even go on it anymore.

  • I never got the chance to see this as I visited WDW the first time in 1997 and Disneyland in 2002. I was lucky enough to see the walkthrough version of this while I was in Disneyland Paris in 2003.

  • Thanks for the memory!

  • This was a truly memorable ride. I remember it from when I was literally a toddler!

  • I wish I could've seen this. Prepare the time machine.

  • Did it stay in Disneyland a bit longer than disneyworld? Cuz i Clearly remember riding in the old submarine and and seeing the mermaids and the sea serpent. and i was born in 1993.

  • what ride is in its place now?

  • @rangerssuck94 Fantasyland is undergoing a big expansion right now, so I'm not sure exactly what will be there. That may be where the new Little Mermaid ride is supposed to go.

  • @rangerssuck94 Fantasyland is undergoing a big expansion right now, so I'm not sure exactly what will be there. That may be where the new Little Mermaid ride is supposed to go.

  • @rangerssuck94 now it's nothing, because of the fantasyland expansion. Is what took it's place years upon years later was a "kid playground". The park was themed Whinny the Pooh and it was nothing special.

In April 2010 Disney tore down the playground for a new ride.

  • @nicklepa24 thanks for the reply

  • what ride is in its place now?

  • what a great ride! too bad they closed it. is there anything in it's place now? I Don't remember anything there...

  • building something simular...its part of the "tear fantasy land down and replace it with character stations" expantion

    its a arial ride

  • This was taken over by that Pooh Park? Dude that thing is gay. And dangerous. I fell Idk how many times trying to catch my brother before he runs into Tigger or something.

  • Miss this ride!

  • I liked the Disneyland version better for certain reasons, such as the way they had the mermaids swimming around, etc. BUT, I like that this version seems longer and is darker. The whole 20k theme is really cool.

  • I loved this ride I have fond memories of my grandmommy yelling " it smells like a toilet in here" when I was 10 years old which was hilarious.

  • @pixie289 ahh gotta love old ppl

    they say the darndest things

  • @pixie289 YES! i def remember it smelling weird inside the subs, i rode this only once, when i first went to disney world back in 1993, i LOVED this ride, it had such an eerie weird feeling to it, and it was all close together inside the sub, but that made it that much cooler. you really felt like you were going deep when it got dark and stuff. i miss these days of Disney sooo much, its still good, but will never be the same.

  • As a six year old this ride was truly magical. Even though it was very phony looking to older riders. I consider it a loss.

  • man i never got too ride this ride its such a shame :(

  • In WDW they can't use the space underwater anymore b/c the walls aren't thick enough, and it'll explode into the infamous underground city that's beneath MK... imagine a soggy Mickey and Minnie:(

  • I love that there are mermaids. :D

I would've wanted to go on this.

  • I seem to remember this ride was such a bitch to get on and off of. But it was a lot of fun!

  • you can enjoy this attraction in Tokyo disney see !

  • that ride was awesome!

  • I wish I could have seen this before they got rid of it. How ironic though that they are now planning an under the sea ride for Ariel where this once was. I wonder if they kept all the structures, just covered them up because the pooh playground only comprises a few hundred square feet of the space.

  • @smilefeverman

The main bau area was paved over for Pooh Playground

I guess the 'under the sea' (in the cave) areas were demolished and some are probably adorning some collectors mantles, bathrooms, and porches

go to this website 20Kride.com to get the full story

  • @smilefeverman They destoried most of the stuctures in (if I rememeber right) 2005, they just finished getting rid of the rest, and moved the pooh playground closer to the ride. I wanted to see it too, and disney doesn't have any more creative in those empty skulls! Thats why I am going to become an imagneer to been back creative into disney!!!

  • @EmeraldIndianSavior me to i want to bring disney magic back

  • @chilleliz YES!!!!! Power to the next generation the one that will bring back walt disney's creative!!!!!!!!!!!!<3

  • @smilefeverman NO. This was completly dismantled.

  • it was my late grandmas and my moms fav ride we went 4 my first time and i wanted to go on it so much but we got there and ariel was telling stories. I HATE NEW DISNEY!

  • Hmm, I guess Nemo was a pretty clever innovation. Sad though because it's the last of the people that actually worked on these. Maybe their family gets some of pieces. Not to mention, going back to remember and it's not there! Crap! Thanks for the upload :)

  • Hey, this is cool! This was called "Submarine Voyage" here in California before it "resurfaced" to become,

    Nemo's Submarine Adventure.

  • this ride looks bad ass!

  • The boats used in this ride at WDW were scrapped when the ride closed, with one going to their private island in the Bahamas as a coral, and two others being sent elsewhere in the Caribbean, where hurricanes destroyed them.

  • thank you so much for these look backs at the classic rides. thank you i miss these rides sooo much!

  • ughh why did they take this ride! its better then ariel!

  • don't they use some of the old set thou ?

  • I'm pretty sure this ride was at Magic Kingdom, not EPCOT where Nemo is. It's where Ariel's Grotto is now. I think there's still a version of this ride in California.

  • there was one at Disneyland In Anaheim,California. But that ride closed in 1999. It was replaced with finding nemo. I know this because I went on it when it was still 20,000 leagues under the sea.

  • This has now turned into the finding Nemo ride ! Not as cool as the origional ride it used to be

  • I remember riding this ride when I was six or seven years old. All that was going through my mind was "Wow, awesome! I'm in a submarine and I'm underwater!" That was the life.

  • I went on this ride when i was 7 and that's it. I was sad when I found out when they got rid of it. They need to make finding nemo submarine ride

  • is this what the finding nemo ride is like now?

  • not quite...

  • I went to the Japan version on my trip to Tokyo back in 08 ... is totaly diferent and it's all about Aliens under the sea ....pretty cool check it out

  • actually it didn't close til later because when we first went in like 1997 or 1998 I wanted to ride it really bad but it was closed for maintenance and when we went back in 2006 I was so disappointed to find out they got rid of it and I waited all those years:-(

  • It closed in 1994, on September 5th. The park just kept the infastructure in place until 2004 and told people it was just "down for maintainance" between those years.

  • That music is creepy lol

  • According to Wikipedia all the props and animatronics were left under the surface and in the dark to rot for years. Just imagine swimming in that dark tunnel and kicking the head of the sea serpent by mistake, not knowing what you touched.

  • That is the creepiest thing I've ever heard. Dark water has always been a fear of mine.

  • I was soooooooooo sad to see this one go . It was my favorite of all when I was little. I wish they would remake this one somewhere maybe Animal or Hollywood Studios

  • they remade it in Disneyland with Nemo. But thats about as close as you are going to get.

  • It was a good ride but definitely not for the claustrophobic.

  • Or auqaphobic.

  • At Disney World, they filled the lagoon in with dirt and put a Pooh Playground on a small portion of the land. 20,000 Leagues at Disney World was not replaced with another attraction. Disneyland was lucky, they got to keep their submarine ride!

  • I used to love this ride. lol it was soo much fun. What ride is this at now. This is in Disney world. But did they replace it with a ride. I know Disneyland replaced it with Nemo. But what about is Disney World?

  • omg! my brother road this ride when he was a baby and they yr i was born 1995 we went back to go ride the ride and it was closed. i know this bc my dad had a camcorder and recorded this and i saw it. I hate the voice in the background it is so boring

  • god this ride takes me back..i remember riding this back in 1987.

  • its finding nemo the ride now

  • i litterally havent seen it in maybe 20 years

  • I never got to go on that. My parents always told me it was boring and always had an outragiously long line. Oh well...

  • hey 20,000 leagues under the sea closed 1994 and in 1994 "Les Mysteres du Nautilus" opened and the sub in the "Les Mysteres du Nautilus" lagoon looks like one of those subs.Think about it closed in 1994 and "Les Mysteres du Nautilus" opened in 1994.Maybe one of the 20,000 leagues under the sea sub is that prop in Paris!

  • They Brought this back In disneyland and added finding nemo charecters

  • I remember that ride but I never got to go on it.

  • I got to ride in 93 when I was 5. Never forgot it

  • good times dude

  • all these extinct rides i can hardly remember. disney has changed so much in the last 20 years.

  • Thank you again for posting. I've posted on a few of these today because I'm so grateful. Creating Vanished World as a little series is like the work of an historian. When these rides closed and before Youtube was popular I thought I would never see them again. Thanks!

  • wtf! your telling me that lagoon looking shit was a ride! and it closed in 94! theres nothing where this ride used to be why dont they just build a new ride or something

  • I thought the finding nemo exhibt took it's place?

  • Disney World filled their 20,000 Leagues in and built a Winnie the Pooh children's park on top.

It was Disney Land who turned their

20,000 Leagues into a Finding Nemo ride.

  • May I ad that the so-called "Pooh Park" sucks and took little money and no imagination? That's the problem with Disney today. But the corporate minds know idiots will still pay 70 dollars to get in to see nothing.

  • @peterproscia the corporated executives are really raping the park. Disneys probably turning in his grave.

  • @peterproscia new fantasyland is going there now :) !

  • Now this is what I call an "E" ticket ride!

  • i never got to experience this ride :(

  • I loved this ride!

  • this ride teryfied me as a kid i could handdle space moutain but i dont kno

  • I remember riding this when I was in elementary school, it was my favorite ride!

  • i remember being on this ride, and getting so clausterphobic, it was so unnatural to see these non-living things underwater, gave me the chills, i was such a pussy.

  • Thank you so much for posting these videos!

  • It's still in Paris, right across from Space Mountain

  • "Les Mysteres du Nautilus" to which you refer is a walk through exhibit whereas 20,000 leagues was a ride in a submarine.

  • Ahah, I thought I'd been on the ride but it must've been that one in Paris.

  • @cristelvideo How my child's imagined that I really was in a submarine with monsters of the deep. I LOVED THIS RIDE! RIP 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

  • I agree that with todays technology they could have made this into a fantasic ride. The underseas are still very much unexplored and full of mystery.

  • how sad that it's gone. why are all the classic rides being removed? i was so angry when Pirate of the Caribbean became a ride based on the movie with johnny depp :(

  • but hey, the ride will stay there at least :D

  • imagine if haunted mansion or pirates was removed.i would be mad and protest and go insane.

  • pooh is retarded!

  • with todays technology, they could have atleast updated it

making it better than it ever was

  • Yea, step one: take out the diesel engines. The EPA would go nuts if those were still operating.

  • on a side note, universal studios orlando still use diesel engines on the jaws attraction

  • Although all elements looked, very, very fake, this ride stood out for taking the tourists into another world. Unfortunatelly, the movie, itself, was very old and most of today's kids have never heard about 20,000 leagues, making this ride outdated, outmatched by high-tech, modern thrill rides, and hard to maintain. By today's standards, this ride would be very boring and not something that will bring the crowds in trucks.

  • It sounds horrible but you're definitely right. :(

  • If you ever go on a Disney cruise you can see two of the old submarines from this ride in the lagoon at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. They don't publicize it, but if you snorkel out into the lagoon you'll see the submarines. Pretty cool!

  • I think it's terrible they got rid of this ride. I would've loved to go on it. It looks so beautiful!

  • 20,000 Leagues was probably very expensive to maintain due to being underwater. The Japan version has simulated underwater cars that people seem to like. This ride was probably best to be retired.

  • kind of like the jaws sharks when they did'nt work for a scene cameras were used for the sharks pov such as chrissies's scene.

  • Yes, and even in Jaws sequels, the shark usually looked fake.

One ride that disappointed me on a visit to Disney last year was the Jungle Cruise. There was algae growing on the concrete hippos that looked very fake.

  • The nemo version looks worst. But still, this ride is in Tokyo Disney Sea

  • the music is annoying

  • at least Disneyland still has a sub ride even if it sucks but Disney World here in Florida has none
