Just curious. It seems many literalist Christians that claim God's law against homosexuality run first to Leviticus. But I suppose one could interpret certain NT passages as saying the same, depending on which translation of the NT you believe in.
I was Mormon, served a mission, and attempted a life being married to a woman. I'm gay, recently divorced, and no longer affiliated with the Mormon church. Actually I'm very vocally against it. As for all translations having the same message, I will just respectfully disagree. When one looks at historical and cultural contexts within certain scripture there are things we assume God forbids that perhaps he does not. But it is your faith not mine.

I believe them to be weaker more corrupt translations of the original Greek to suit the conservative religious social agenda. I go after the KJV where it does NOT condemn homosexuality in 1 Cor 6:9. The bible also talks of people being separated and sorted into different languages for things that they have done etc. And no, skin color is not spiritually important. at all. Mormons believe that you must be a member of a specific church (theirs) and go through all the rights and rituals as well as a multitude of other things to enter heaven, so my friend there is clearly a big difference between the two.....Christ is the only way to salvation, not men

I was Mormon, served a mission, and attempted a life being married to a woman. I'm gay, recently divorced, and no longer affiliated with the Mormon church. Actually I'm very vocally against it. As for all translations having the same message, I will just respectfully disagree. When one looks at historical and cultural contexts within certain scripture there are things we assume God forbids that perhaps he does not. But it is your faith not mine.

the difference between you(atleast if im understanding you correctly, because you say you are gay) and a Christian who is attracted to the same sex is, they decide to obey God, wait for deliverance, and even if God does not change their desires, they WILL NOT go against what God has said is right. One man, one woman. period. Homosexuality is sin, an abomination before a holy God. He created woman for man, not man for man. If you think He has made an exception for you? then you are decieved.

the difference in who is saved, and who is decieved into thinking they are saved, is clear in scripture..."such WERE some of you".. I am sorry that you desire the same sex... that has got to be rough... but sinners desire to sin... it is depravity, the fall.. you cannot use the excuse, God hasn't changed it so it must be ok....you must obey God!

Firstly I am not a Biblical literalist. This is a post modern invention into Christianity and I don't buy in to that view any more than I do Mormonism. Sorry. 2. nowhere in any of the usual passages does it actually say that homosexuality is a "sin." 3. If you were to study the historic and cultural context of each this would support # 2. 4 We are all sinners in the eyes of God. 5. If its a choice when did you choose to be straight?

I don't disagree that God sanctified a man and woman to procreate & populate the earth. But I don't believe God being" no respecter of persons" elevated the happiness of heterosexuals to being more acceptable than homosexuals. If we are created in God's image then God created gay people too - especially if being a faithful Christian doesn't "deliver' you from being gay. You can't have it both ways if you are a Biblical literalist.

you are missing my point. I am NOT taking away from the fact that you are attracted to the same sex. I truly believe that you are. That being said, we cannot use the excuse " God hasnt changed my preference, therefor, it must be ok".. do you understand that? If a person desires something, no matter how much it hurts him to say NO.. it is still a matter of submission, and obedience to God's word. NO MAN WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE EXCUSE, "GOD DIDN'T CHANGE ME SO I MUST BE GOOD"

The "new nature" the " new birth" that comes with salvation from Christ. Tells you that what I say is truth. Christ is not a respecter of persons, you are right in that. And God is not going to punish sins, without punishing yours. You don't get a pass, just because you say, you still feel gay, and God must be ok with that. God is a holy God. He cannot look upon sins. And if you are truly repentant of your sins, He will forgive you, give you a new nature that will desire to obey Him. Trust!

Would you call Jesus a bigot if he was standing right in front of you telling you that homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God? That's what God says in 1 Cor 6:9
Would you call Jesus a bigot for saying what he did in Matt 7:13-14?

Firstly I don't believe in the modern "retranslations" of the bible (NIV). I believe them to be weaker more corrupt translations of the original Greek to suit the conservative religious social agenda. I go after the KJV where it does NOT condemn homosexuality in 1 Cor 6:9. I agree completely with Matt 7:13-14 and also does NOT condemn homosexuality.

Are you kidding me? Your ignorance is overwhelming. Not all homosexuals are effeminate (I do include myself here). If we were to go by your narrow minded and slanted view this would include all that were effeminate including women be they heterosexual or not. This passage does not distinguish gender. If this is the best your literalism can offer I will take my EX-Mormon now Christian view of scripture any day!

Firstly this is Paul talking about his call, not God giving commandment or law. Your lack of context, as with most literalists, is truly astonishing. Again nowhere does it say being homosexual is a sin. I was in church yesterday and I know I'm forgiven and I'm not a sinner for being gay any more than you are for being straight. I can see you are only going to regurgitate your literalist view and that which your pastor tells you rather than you studying out for yourself. You're in my prayers.

I have never said anything of the kind. An individual by the name of "n2pubes" did however make such a claim. I am a church musician and a pipe organ builder. Perhaps you have not been following the discussion very closely. Should this happen to be how one reads the Bible I can understand the confusion regarding this issue.

I see that you said homosexuality is wrong. So then does this mean that those scriptures that are literal are just garbage and we should throw that part of God's word away?
How then do you know what part is literal and true and what part is non-literal and false?

Oh. I think accepting all of the Bbible as literally the word of God is just as dangerous as accepting the Book of Mormon to be scripture as revealed by God to Joe Smith. I haven't said homosexuality is wrong if you read my posts. I'm making quite the opposite point. For those that genuinely study the Bible it is clear when God is speaking and when the writer is speaking. Most don't want to put in that effort and just believe their pastor's interpretations. That is also dangerous.

The one thing you say though is that it is clear when God is speaking and when the writer is speaking. The Bible is the inspiritional word from God to the writers.
You are right when it comes to trusting anyone when it comes to the Bible. We must study it for ourselves so we know what is truth and what is error.
So when do you know what part God is speaking and when He isn't?

(replied off post). God gave us brains for a reason, to be able to ascertain that which can be misleading if we were to only use feelings as a spiritual compass, as in Mormonism. The mind is the check and balance for truth and "spiritual feelings" or the good things of God in our hearts are the qualifier. To any wishing to retort about the complete corruptness of our hearts (Jer 17:9) I will have a response to you.

Hi JJ, you're quite right, homosexual practice is clearly condemned in the Bible and is called an abomination, unnatural and depraved. But I suspect that praestant8 is a lost cause, he/she is determined to allow their feelings (and sexual feelings are incredibly strong) to dictate their theology. Reason has no place in the mind of a rebellious individual. Bless you for trying though, pray for this person that they would know the risen Lord and be released from their abhorrent lifestyle.

My feelings have had little bearing on my Christian beliefs. I would also admonish you not to judge me with out knowing me personally. "Abomination" does not mean "sin" either literally or otherwise. That is misguided falsehood spread by fearful ignorant people. It means in proper context to the scripture "uncustomary." But I know you will not permit yourself to do anything more than take your pastor's word for it. Either way I know God loves me and that I'm saved.

My friend, I'm not judging your position with God just your errant description of what is sin and what is not. I am also not following my pastor but Holy Scripture, it's clear to any Christian (and to many non Christians) that homosexual practice is roundly condemned by God both in the Old and the New Testaments. But as I said to my friend JJ, you are entrenched in this particular sin and have created for yourself a web of denial concerning its seriousness.

There's no argument against denial, if a man stands in the street crying "the sky is down!" then no amount of well meaning people who come by and tell him it is in fact "up" will shake him from his fantasy. Romans is clear, it is God's revelation to man on the wickedness of sin and the suppression of the truth and is the benchmark by which we decipher our morality. How would you have us decide on moral issues, consensus of opinion?
