My favorite song from my favorite musical. Nobody sings it like Brian Stokes Mitchell. It really needs a big booming voice. Maybe Jennifer Holliday. That being said, Aretha sounds wonderful singing it.
Aretha reclaims her throne atop the musical genius' of our time. Aretha is in the best vocal form I've heard her in ages in this clip, clear good voice, and her signature vocal delivery always with a hint of gospel/blues(hence the gritty rasp) She may not have sang this in the broadways style sister re Aretha-ized this into a gospel opus. You're back my queen, you're back!
amazing wow we must ahev really different meanings for that word... i know she is singing this in a differnt style than musical theatre which this song is from... but no she kinda trashed the song...lol2:47 to the end... the scratchy high notes and unsupported tone? yikes!!!!!!
Oh you are full of crap! This was an amazing reading by Aretha. She brought so much emotion out of this song, she did no such thing as trash it. If anything she brought so much more to this song than anyone else did. From start to finish Aretha was amazing and that is the bottomline.
Oh my God. Have you ever seen Ragtime, or even heard Brian Stokes Mitchell's version? Please don't make ridiculous claims like "she brought so much more to this song than anyone else did". That's bullshit and super offensive to people who actually know the context in which this song was meant.
the context would apply for aretha as well. remember, she came to prominence during the civil and women's right era. she was friends with and a great supporter of Dr. King. she knows from which she sings.
Though I love this interpretation, don't listen to The QueenAretha, She/he is a total idiot, their screen name shows that you cant reason with them. No logic, just a closed minded idiotic approach to debating. While I loved her interpretation of this song I feel the same way when it comes to her singing the aria "Nessun Dorma" but nobody heard what I had to say. I hear ya.

I want so badly for her to lose the weight...I really do. When you see someone resting their hands on top of their stomach or tits, it means ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY...THEY'RE FAT AS SHIT!. Her health is important and I for one would absolutely love for her to be able to record well into her 70's like Sarah Vaughn and Ella before her but it aint gonna happen if her heart has to maintain 250 lbs of fat. God Bless her and I'll hope for the best. I mean, she has grandkids now for Chrissakes.
Im not picking a fight, here but I find your response interesting. ok, Im just curious. So, you couldnt care less if she tips over because of a heart attack?...you're fine with the prospect of her not recording well into her 70's?.
Well i hate to kind of tell you but Aretha has lost a tremendous amount of weight. She's been focusing more on her health and is looking better and more healthy.
IF WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE, why would you "hate" telling me something like that?...Im excited for her and I cant wait to see the "new" Aretha. What exactly does a tremendous amount look like? Last time I saw her I didnt really notice any significant weight loss..
a prayer for aretha : it distresses me my Queen, The Gracious Aretha was made to wear this, I know her supreme talent is way way above fashion but she looked like she got out of bed and forgot she's still under the duvet..her hair extension seemed it was marinaded overnight in curry powder...but still, i love you Aretha..
b) they way she does showtunes urkes me. the original version is sooooo much better (without her riffs). plus, when she sang i dreamed a dream at the clinton inauguration i wanted to die.
she's talented, but this song was never meant to be sung like that.
My main complaint with "showtunes" are they are too "beat" based, so I think anytime there is more soul added it's a plus. You'll notice she phrases it just perfectly to fit around the meaning of the song. That's what soul singers do. I think her interpretation of I Dreamed A Dreams were amazing, and the best I've ever heard. The way she placed special emphasis on every word brought the meaning out to me.
No one can deny Aretha has lost some of what her voice was when she was younger. That's just due to the fact she is older and has been singing for so long. But no one can say, and this proves it, that she hasn't lost passion and soul for singing.
she is the one and only songer that can make me cry along with billie holiday and mary j blige gladys diana ross barbra str. and sometimes patti but aretha and mary are the true soul singers that the emotions is not force its natural coming from the heart n gut
i love aretha and mary vocally there not good but emotionally they can give that makes you feel them thats why their my two favorite singers along side marvin gaye and dennis edwards from the temptations
That wasn't "Make Them Hear You." That was "Musical Musings of Aretha Franklin inspired by the song Make Them Hear You." Making a song your own has changed meanings from...finding a deep connection to the piece that is personal to you...to...change notes and rhythms whenever and wherever you feel like.
Because she undersands what she sings, why she sings, and is able to communicate this to her listeners. She is full of soul, a consummate singer. This is what musical art is all about. I love her, too.
of corse, the original is a broadway number, Aretha's gospel runs and inflections come natural to her, even if she was to sing the yellow pages, so it was clear she was going to give it a different reading
I love this song but only as a baritone's song. I love aretha and she is god to soul but i think she may have hurt the song a bit. I love "Ragtime" listen to it when a baritone sing it. It will sound better. It was written for a male baritone anyway. Don't get me wrong this is still amazing.

She always does well on this song; it must really inspire her. She was great singing it just a couple of weeks ago at Mandela Day.

Size shouldn't matter,
She's a singer
It's about her voice.
To be beautiful as a singer.
It relies solely on your voice.
That makes Aretha Franklin one of the more beautiful people.
I have nothing but respect for her.
