the tuning up process can be seen in guitar tuning. You always want to tune up there, too. If you tune down the head will eventually not drop to the desired pitch until struck with a stick. So if you tune down instead of up, you will find that the snare will detune itself after a short drum session.
i use a piece of duct tape with a folded peice of a tissue under it to muffle my overtones.Trust me the tissue really helps. I mostly play rock and jazz. Or i play concert/ marching style stuff and all of those sound better without loud overtones.
I've tried pretty much every technique from every video I've seen on youtube, and I still have an annoying rattle/buzz from my snare. i like A little bit of a ring so I don't want to muffle it all down. any suggestions?
@flyingmonkeysquad Did you check out my Snare Tuning 210 video. If not...check that out. If that still does not help then hit the snare with a baseball bat till you have exhausted your anger. BzB :-)
What settings do you typically use on the evans torque key. It seems to me the first few settings are useless but I dont want to over tighten. Right now I have the resos at 9 and the batter at 8 and I still have unwanted boing and snare rattle
@Nyhcbri1 Well Actually, I have abandoned the use of my tourque key. I was having much the same problem you are talking about. So by not using it I have honed my own skills and I am better at tuning now than I ever was. I am strictly using the cross tune method and tuning each the same amount as I go through...then I check the tuning by each lug as I have shown in my video. I tune pretty tightly and I dont worry about over tightening. I have really tightened them down and never broke a head
I learned this trick from a drum teacher I had a while back:
If you want more "pop" or "ping" to your snare, tighten the four lugs around the snares themselves on your bottom head. Tighten them considerably more than the other ones, so much so that the rim might even bend a little. Then all you have to do is adjust your snares so they are how you want them, and that should do the trick! This works best with harder snares, like steel, copper or aluminum. I have the Chad Smith Signature Snare.
Is it correct that you have to tune the bottom head at a slightly different pitch to the top head. Also, do all drums tune this way. and how long do those o-rings last?
Give your snare that Power Rock sound. Get rid of that wire "splat" sound and have more drum sound come through on your snare drum get SWAT - Snare Wire Arrestor & Tuner Drum Muffler Dampener. Swat also helps control snare wire buzz. Go to eBay, enter "SWAT" in the search box and set to "Musical Instruments" category and read up, and listen to (YouTube link) what SWAT can do for your snare. Totally Revolutionary!
wow! the first tuning video I have found on youtube that agrees with my break in method. way too many videos of people saying to put your fist thru the head to break it in. such an un-even, inconsistant method but people with fight you over disagreement just about. I have always put heads on & tuned 'em up. played a lil. then sure you may have to tune it up a few times before its over but at least the head is broke in or stretched consistant and will last as long as it should.
too bad you really cant fine tune your dampening with that remo thing. you slap that on and your drum's tone is dead and you have a cardboard box you mine as well be playing on. however it is a good option if you have a poor drum.
proffesional drummers, ive seen, use electrical tape and scrunch it up (envision a catepillar walking somewhere) to dampen.
great. so my stock tama snare that came with my set and it has a tama head on it is going to no matter what, will still kind of sound like shit. ive tried tuning it and tuning it, it still sounds like shit. great. im only 15! i cant afford a snare! FUCK!!!
@armthehomeless199 I had the same here on my first set. The only solution is to buy a new head and tune it. The stock heads are HORRIBLE and no matter how you tune it, it will not sound great
@armthehomeless199 dude. Check this out. Take an old drum head. Cut out a 3 inch wide circle the size of your snare. Place it on top. It really helps the stock tama head!
somebody help please bfore its too late...i like my snare tight but the more i tighted it i heard an overtone so i took off the top head and in the inner part i putted duct tape with cotton and i tuned it REALLY TIGHT..it sounds great but IS THAT BAD FOR THE SNARE??
I might look for that at GuitarCenter and buy one, and i wanted to know what you prefer, would it be a good use or not? Because i've nver used a tuner before, I've only just did it by sound. It that Evans snare tuner usefull for the toms as well?
Ya those stickie dampeners are called Moongel Damper Pads. I got those, and they turn out to work pretty well. I kinda prefer to have 2 of them on my floor tom though because its a pretty big and echo type drum. But anyway i was watching this because of that Evans snare tuner key, it looks very intense.
Well, you can play on it right after you tune it...but it may need to be frequently re-tuned after songs as it is getting set. You can also "set" the head before you put it on by manually stretching the head over the rim before you screw the lugs down...but I don't personally like doing that. I have had to change heads in the middle of a night at a club before but I just had to re-tune it a few times during the next set. You should also have a back up snare at a gig....BzB :-)
All that is really up to you and what you want to hear. There are a lot of people out there that tune their snares to a particular pitch and all that. I tune mine till it feels right. Whatever that is...it is right for you...not some drumming snob that thinks they know what is best for everyone...Experiment with it...get it the way you like it. BzB :-)
i was really skeptic toward remOs until i saw you put it in action. i've been using moongel. i have about 12 pads of them lol. i like a really tight sound. Keep the tone, lose the ring.
I really enjoyed the video! Very informative and well done. :D
The little "gel somethings" -- a company called RTOM makes something call MoonGel Damper Pads (their most popular pack comes in a pack of four 2"X1 1/2" pads that sell for about $6.75). They work at least just as well as the Rem-O's.
Also, it's my personal preference to tune the resonating (bottom) head a little higher than the batter (top) head, especially if I'm playing in an orchestral setting.
Wow man! That ring really changed the sound! I've been having problems with my snare ringing too much, but that sounds so much better! I'm kind of broke, and I play a really shitty kit, but tuned properly it doesn't sound too bad. I'm going to try the duct tape to cancel out the ring. Thanks!
how much tension do you recommend for a 12x5 snare? i got the porkepie little squealer... im basically looking for metal sound like avenged sevenfold kamelot that kind of stuff but i also want it to be good for drum rolls... do u have any advise?
I am familiar with those band names but dont know enough about their sound to be able to tell you one way or the other. Personally, I like my snare tight. It is the only way to make the drum rolls easy...unless you have hands of steel. BzB :-)
Yes...I played a bunch of snares that day and picked that one...but not because of the color. My kit is Purple...the snare is black. I chose the snare because it had the best sound. BzB :-)
1st of all bout the only thing a remo head is good for is scooping dog shit off your lawn, EVANS all the way! But a helpful hint for ya is when youre tuning your snare is to drop the snares down (by using the lever on the side), this will eliminate the 'buzz' so you can hear the actual tone. Also if you have a RemO dampening ring put that on, this will eliminate alot of the over-ring. A Tama tension watch is a good tool to use to get perfect tension all the way around the head. Hope this helps
Bazy, i have a problem. i need help tuning a remo pinstripe clear snare. i went to a music shop and had a guy tune my snare for me. and there is some lugs that are higher pitched and some others that are lower. like 2 of them are the same. and i dont know how to tune it correctly. if you could just msg me telling me how as in tip wise i would appreciate it very much.
Tune the lower pitched lugs up to meet the higher tuned ones...tighten only a little at a time...maybe a quarter turn each until you get it. Use the methods I show in this video...also check out "Snare Tuning 210" my other vid on the subject. If you still cant get it then I will need more info in order to help you. BzB :-)
thank you bazy. i did get it now. it sounds really good. i have the remOs too. but yeah it sounds really good now cuz of you. thank you bazy, once again.
Very good vid, i play merengue Music and bought a used snare to add pop to the breaks, but i had no clue how to tune it!! Lol ur vid was very helpful, i glad i came across it.... Thank you!!
umm .. i have this problem .. that whenever i hit the toms or the floor tom or the base drum .. there is this sound which comes from my snare .. how do i get rid of it ..?
Well..first you have to know that it is almost impossible to get rid of all that noise. There is an exceptable level however. Watch my second vid "Snare drum tuning 210". If the stuff in that vid does not handle it then you may have to live with it. Know this though. On my $5000 electroinc drum kit...there is actually a setting where you can put that noise into the kit to make it sound more real. The reason you dont hear that sound on your favorite CD is because of the processing. BzB :-
Thanks for letting me know that the vid helped. I am glad you got your sound right...that is what I do all this for. Just knowing that it worked for someone makes it all worth it for me. BzB :-)
Thanks bro...but I really am just saying it like it is...I am just an average every day drummer...sometimes I get it all right..sometimes I get nothing right. BzB :-)
I am not sure where you got that information but it says right on the ring "REMO'S" It said that all over the packaging as well. It may be called a Damper Ring..but this is a REMO's Damper Ring. I also have some that are made by Aquarian as well. None of the packaging says "Damper Ring" by the way...although I know that they are typically refered to as such.
try the aquarian high energy snare heads. they're not good for brushes because it has an exposed power dot thats the only con. there like 10 bucks too. they're cheap
dampening snare drums just makes them sound boring in my opinion. (unless of course your drum really sucks, or you can't tune it well) I'm a terrible tuner, so right now I'm using moongel to cover up all the annoying ring, but I'm going to try tuning like this and then hopefully I can quit using it.
i do the finger dension thing differently.what i do is i look at the tension rod and ger it to the top of the rim to the drum for a reason and thats because sometimes the tread inside the lug is sometimes off and gives you that feeling that its tighter than it is
Thanks man...this vid was just the easy simple straight forward stuff...I am glad it helped but if you ever need more than this I have a newer vid with the more detailed stuff for those really tough drums.
im a 12 year old drummer.. would you consider getting moongels over rings? or rings over moon gels?? (moon gel is the gel you were talking about) please tell me.. i need help picking.. im going to get 1 of them.. and i dunno which to get!! PLEEEASEEE HELPPP
I am still on the fence with the Gels. But lately I have been using them and have found that they are very versatile and easy to use. The problem is that if you want to have a song without them on, you have to have somewhere to put them where they will not get dirty. This makes you take much more time caring for them in between songs. With Rings, I just take them off and throw them on the floor. It just depends what your playing situation is and if you need them on and off. BzB :-)
You should try the Drum dial also. I like it cause it measures the pressure of the drum head itself rather than the tension on the lugs which could be inaccurate if your lug threads have any dings or chips on them. otherwise great video
What kind of el bull shito ley commento est deees crapolo ju are speking to me essay? Done jor motor tell ju not tu shay nufing ef ju don got nuffing nice tu shay. Peace on tu ju...Heheehehehe...
It makes me wonder how so many people around the world have so much time put aside in their day to just be random ass holes.
The gels you were talking about are moongels. I have them but im not totally sold on them. I dont have remOs but I have evans e-rings and they do the exact same thing and do a good job. Also the moongels actually dont leave any residue or sticky mess. I simply think the rings are easier because you can simply take them off. Nice video :)!!!!!!
Yea...it was like 10 minutes after shooting the vid I remembered what they were called but I did not feel like changing the vid for that one thing. I have since bought some and enjoy them...they are easy and they do a great job too. BzB ;-)
Hey BzB, one question! What can i do if my upper rim has deformed? It seems to be a bit unequal after a few months...i was already at the music-store to buy a new one but its just too expensive... is it really a problem, i mean... a big problem?
Dude...I wish there was something I could tell you...but unless you are a master metal worker and know how to bend that thing back to a perfect circle...you will always have a problem with that rim. Save up...buy a new one.
Hey this video is really good, it helped me alot,One thing that you didn't really cover is how to tune the bottom head, even though it is the same, there is that snare thing on the bottom of it. You should loosen them off the head and put a stick inbetween them and the drum, so it makes it easier to tune. Just something that beginners might not know :)
Dude...if you had any idea how busy I stay just writing back to almost every single message I get...plus working on new vids and my regular day job, you would understand why I cant get to your request. I have got over 400 songs on the list now that have been requested just from YouTube. That does not include the ones I have gotten from Myspace as well. I get song requests all the time...unfortunately, I am just one guy. I want to help as many people as possible. I am sorry your disappointed.
It does not necessarily work for every drum. You really dont need it...it is just a cool toy to have if all of your lugs tighten at the same amount of torque. If one has a bit of rust or something like that...it will not work well. I just tune by turns just like I show in the vid. BzB :-)
plz cover this song popeye of the sailorman MXPX me and my band have a battle next week and dis is the song that,im going to play but i dont know how to play no more tabs in flame tune...plz fella`s help me to my problem i know you can help cover the song and make a tutorial.....pla my deadline in nxt week..plz make a cover with a tutorial i hope you will understand me!!
Honestly, I have had that shirt for so long I cant remember where I got it. I am thinking that I may have gotten it when I purchased my last Pearl kit. You could always check at the Pearl Web Site...I am sure that they sell similar gear. BzB :-)
You should mention about the difference between top and bottom heads being a different tune...also mabey how to set, or reset the snare wires. This would be helpful info for some people.
Thanks for the comment. Since these questions had come up after this vid was put out, I created a second vid "Snare Drum Tuning 210" and I think I got all those in that video. Check it out if you have time. It is here on my channel. Peace. BzB :-)
dude...occasionally I miss a message or two...I get a lot of messages every day. I get about 1500 to 2500 hits a day with somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 to 150 comments and e-mail a day. So dont ever take it personally if I cant answer you. I appreciate that you dig the vids...I always check out the songs that people suggest. Some I do and some I dont get to...but I enjoy all the suggestions. Thanks man...BzB :-)
when your tuning the bottom head put a drum stick under the snare strip so it doesnt make a sound while you are trying to listern for the right sounds.
I will have to check those songs out. I will not be shooting any vids until Spring Break...about 2 to 3 weeks from now. I will check those tunes out though...and if they really sound like my kind of song I will consider adding them in the mix. Thanks for writing. BzB ;-)
What made you say REO? Even though I have opened up for them before, I cant say they are my absolute favorite. In fact, It would be hard to pin down a favorite band. I like everything from Rush and the police to Pink Floyd and Level 42. I dig Prince, Rick James, Phil Collins and Billy Idol. I like new and old. BzB :-)
ha! i have that damn torque key...i tune till it clicks on each lug then i go back and they keep turning and it clicks at a higher and higher tension....it doesnt help that ma kit is a fuckin DDrum with cast iron shit hardware all over it that is breaking on me evey time i play....i want to overhaul ma kit with hardware, does anyone have an estimate on a diablo ddrum kit (4 toms, snare, 2 kicks)
I didn't think those ring things made much difference, I've always used moongels which don't seem to be as dramatic. Advice anyone?

The resonant head tension all depends on the sound you want.
Generally, you get a warmer sound by tuning the bottom head slightly lower than the top
Where you get a brighter sound for a slightly tighter lower. This is for snares by the way.
The O rings can last forever if you don't bend em

By waxing the bearing edges you can do away with popping and it makes tuning smoother.
I like to tune the bottom head first with the top head off. (all drums)
It makes it easier to detect pitch differences and then the top head is easier to even out.

it's funny that, it was so obvious of the pitch difference when you hit the snare at 5:47 to like 5:49
and when I tune my drums by myself, I can't tell the difference that obviously.

Wow man! That ring really changed the sound! I've been having problems with my snare ringing too much, but that sounds so much better! I'm kind of broke, and I play a really shitty kit, but tuned properly it doesn't sound too bad. I'm going to try the duct tape to cancel out the ring. Thanks!

check out moongel dude, it much more fine tunable than a remO

how much tension do you recommend for a 12x5 snare? i got the porkepie little squealer... im basically looking for metal sound like avenged sevenfold kamelot that kind of stuff but i also want it to be good for drum rolls... do u have any advise?
SemphasNecros 2 years ago
I am familiar with those band names but dont know enough about their sound to be able to tell you one way or the other. Personally, I like my snare tight. It is the only way to make the drum rolls easy...unless you have hands of steel. BzB :-)
bazybeats 2 years ago
Did you say you didnt buy it cos of the colour... then you said you played several snare drums the day that you bought it :D
Good video though
ColmIncendinall 2 years ago
Yes...I played a bunch of snares that day and picked that one...but not because of the color. My kit is Purple...the snare is black. I chose the snare because it had the best sound. BzB :-)
bazybeats 2 years ago

Thank YOu BzB's, Nick (IaMsPaRtA87)
IaMsPaRtA87 2 years ago
Tune the lower pitched lugs up to meet the higher tuned ones...tighten only a little at a time...maybe a quarter turn each until you get it. Use the methods I show in this video...also check out "Snare Tuning 210" my other vid on the subject. If you still cant get it then I will need more info in order to help you. BzB :-)

thank you bazy. i did get it now. it sounds really good. i have the remOs too. but yeah it sounds really good now cuz of you. thank you bazy, once again.

umm .. i have this problem .. that whenever i hit the toms or the floor tom or the base drum .. there is this sound which comes from my snare .. how do i get rid of it ..?
4360777 2 years ago
Well..first you have to know that it is almost impossible to get rid of all that noise. There is an exceptable level however. Watch my second vid "Snare drum tuning 210". If the stuff in that vid does not handle it then you may have to live with it. Know this though. On my $5000 electroinc drum kit...there is actually a setting where you can put that noise into the kit to make it sound more real. The reason you dont hear that sound on your favorite CD is because of the processing. BzB :-

try tightening the strainer, its probably from the snare wire being to loose.

good vid man. It,s not a remo though. A dampner ring. Made by remo. Sorry, i,m a pain. ha
lilliedrew 2 years ago
I am not sure where you got that information but it says right on the ring "REMO'S" It said that all over the packaging as well. It may be called a Damper Ring..but this is a REMO's Damper Ring. I also have some that are made by Aquarian as well. None of the packaging says "Damper Ring" by the way...although I know that they are typically refered to as such.
BzB :-)
bazybeats 2 years ago
try the aquarian high energy snare heads. they're not good for brushes because it has an exposed power dot thats the only con. there like 10 bucks too. they're cheap

I will take a look at those next time I am at the store. Sorry it took me so long to answer....I dont know how I missed your post. BzB :-)
bazybeats 2 years ago
dampening snare drums just makes them sound boring in my opinion. (unless of course your drum really sucks, or you can't tune it well) I'm a terrible tuner, so right now I'm using moongel to cover up all the annoying ring, but I'm going to try tuning like this and then hopefully I can quit using it.

i do the finger dension thing differently.what i do is i look at the tension rod and ger it to the top of the rim to the drum for a reason and thats because sometimes the tread inside the lug is sometimes off and gives you that feeling that its tighter than it is

im a 12 year old drummer.. would you consider getting moongels over rings? or rings over moon gels?? (moon gel is the gel you were talking about) please tell me.. i need help picking.. im going to get 1 of them.. and i dunno which to get!! PLEEEASEEE HELPPP
andrewcopeowns 2 years ago
I am still on the fence with the Gels. But lately I have been using them and have found that they are very versatile and easy to use. The problem is that if you want to have a song without them on, you have to have somewhere to put them where they will not get dirty. This makes you take much more time caring for them in between songs. With Rings, I just take them off and throw them on the floor. It just depends what your playing situation is and if you need them on and off. BzB :-)

that's all a torque key does... is give a nice guideline... good video it helped alot

You should try the Drum dial also. I like it cause it measures the pressure of the drum head itself rather than the tension on the lugs which could be inaccurate if your lug threads have any dings or chips on them. otherwise great video

The gels you were talking about are moongels. I have them but im not totally sold on them. I dont have remOs but I have evans e-rings and they do the exact same thing and do a good job. Also the moongels actually dont leave any residue or sticky mess. I simply think the rings are easier because you can simply take them off. Nice video :)!!!!!!
vanhalen021 2 years ago
Yea...it was like 10 minutes after shooting the vid I remembered what they were called but I did not feel like changing the vid for that one thing. I have since bought some and enjoy them...they are easy and they do a great job too. BzB ;-)

Hey BzB, one question! What can i do if my upper rim has deformed? It seems to be a bit unequal after a few months...i was already at the music-store to buy a new one but its just too expensive... is it really a problem, i mean... a big problem?
SgtPeterFuck 2 years ago
Dude...I wish there was something I could tell you...but unless you are a master metal worker and know how to bend that thing back to a perfect circle...you will always have a problem with that rim. Save up...buy a new one.

Hey this video is really good, it helped me alot,One thing that you didn't really cover is how to tune the bottom head, even though it is the same, there is that snare thing on the bottom of it. You should loosen them off the head and put a stick inbetween them and the drum, so it makes it easier to tune. Just something that beginners might not know :)

cool ill check that out 2 do u recommend that (evans tuning key)?
unvdsnts 2 years ago
It does not necessarily work for every drum. You really dont need it...it is just a cool toy to have if all of your lugs tighten at the same amount of torque. If one has a bit of rust or something like that...it will not work well. I just tune by turns just like I show in the vid. BzB :-)

when your tuning the bottom head put a drum stick under the snare strip so it doesnt make a sound while you are trying to listern for the right sounds.
