She is amazing! Look at her legs and her toes! It takes a hell of a lot of strength in your feet to pull that off! As one who took ballet from age 5 to my mid twenties - (I still have my "toe shoes" and practice "barre" daily at 52!) - she deserves to be called a "prima ballerina".
In fact, we are talking about the grand masters and Zakharova is really not the best in doing fouettes. There are a number of stars in Bolshoi who turns are much better, more difficult and cleaner. Look at videos of Ekaterina Krysanova or Natalia Osipova (former Bolshoi Theater). If you understand ballet you will agree with me. Alternatively, look at Lali Kandelaki fouettes and you will get truly exceptional turns.
I agree with lots of comments here. In my opinion her pirouettes are unbelievable and absolutely amazing but I don't like her arm position. It doesn't fit with her perfection!
She's so beautiful! I wonder how she manage to have such a slim body yet her face is still quite "meaty"...whenever i lose weight the first thing that actually looses weight in me is my face so I look weird. I never go on a diet but dancing ballet really makes one loose alot of weight even though I don't want to. Oh well!
i sat through years of a relative angrilly criticising ballerinas on videos or television for not doing moves right and in retrospect i wished i had snapped back well you get up and show how it's done .... they are very thin but obviously this is a style (ie more angelina jolie than madonna) that not many of us could have ever attained to - bravo !! bravo !!!
I love how ignorant people who don't even know of all the different styles of each move judge her while they themselves will never amount to what she has amounted to.
@MsLithuanianGirl I have a lot of respect for her, but is she not performing for an audience? To people that probably don't even know what a tendu is? Dance can be enjoyed by anyone, and similarly, laymen can have their own reservations against certain techniques irrelevant to their own mastery. It just is what it is. My two cents. No disrespect.
she does need to work her hands, its true. as to the legs, its nor properly wrong. some people prefere doing the fouette legs straight to frappe fouette, not going through ronde de jambe en l'air
Agreed @Aster55555. Her partner's feet are HORRIBLE. If you want to see some REALLY impressive fouettes en pointe then look up the final dance scene in the movie "Center Stage" Her hands, arms, feet,EVERYTHING are beautiful!!
@Dancerchic9724 You cannot possibly compare Amanda to Svetlana! Center Stage is a movie, this final dance scene has been filmed many times and cut together in the end - this is live performance!
@KatxMeow What do you mean, she LOOKS like a narcissist? Are you saying you're making a judgement about her character based on how she dances and holds herself onstage?
I'm sorry if I bother to write it here, just try to be more objective in my comments and do not try to discredit anyone, I love the Russian school and many of his positions I defend myself because I was trained in it, but I think a criticism aimed at the improvement thereof, may be productive for everyone, not only enticed into the same childish comments
ohhhhhhhhh guauuuuuu saying, not this great ???!!!. There as they see ciao!
'experts' on all the ballet posts on youtube crack me up. literally look at every single top ballerina in the world and on youtube there are a bunch of couch potatoes on here complaining about her style. Svetlana Zakharova is one of the top ballerina's in the world and her performance is amazing.
To anyone who whines about how "bad" she looks: This is amazing. JUST WALKING on pointe hurts to high fuck, let alone doing FOUETES. She's got amazing accents on the turns. Mine just look all the same, despite the fact that I've been dancing for fifteen years. So stop the whining and try it yourself if you think it's awful.
@NaomiLawlietJr I know right? Listening to all this wanna be little girls who ARE NOT a prima ballerina...come on now....I THINK those WHO KNOW and saw her talent, style and the magic and CHOSE her to be where she is....might know just a little something more than these idiots with their jealous spiteful "critiques".....LOL!!!
RUSSIAN TRAINING!!!!! shes a gorgeous ballerina and doesnt deserves better than this critisism shes not sloppy pointe is difficult things r bound to look a little bad at points but come on shes AMAZING
@pointedancer1000 You mean she DOES deserves better than this! She's a number one Russian ballet dancer so people just should shut up about her being 'sloppy'! I agree with you, she's amazing!

I have always believed that until you are at the same level as someone, you really can't critique them. I believe that one has every right to look up to someone and take from them what they like and don't like. However, until you reach that person's level, be reasonable ;)
As for Zakharova's fouettes, there's nothing she can't do well :) <3
@moeonline97 If this were the case, only best-selling novelists would critique novels (how would they have the time?), and only Top 10 music artists could critique other successful music artists. It doesn't take a highly-trained Anything to see this woman can dance her ass off, yet still be distracted by her arms. I have no idea whether it's good, bad, or in-between, but her arms distracted my eye.
Dance companies have realized that there is nothing wrong with hyperextended legs. There are many misconceptions about hyperextended legs. As far as the fouettes, shes trained in Russia... there's are different. Just like @GREATballetDANCER mentioned in her comment.
Although she did a good job I have to agree with the majority here. Here arms and hands need some work. I think it looks weird because her fouettes are just going straight to the side and not front side.
@re2dance because these are russian fouettes (in Moiseyeva's method), not the regular (royal) fouettes that you are used to see (in which the leg opens at the front and goes to the side) ........ that's why they look so strange to you
@GREATballetDANCER I knew there was something different. As I said above she did a good job but I think I prefer the "royal method" as you pointed out. There's something more fluid about it. Or could be that I prefer it because it is what I studied and am used to seeing. I'm going to try practicing the "Moiseyeva's method." I wonder if one is more difficult than the other? Thanks for cluing me in.
Unfortunately I'm still not a fan of her arms in first position.
@re2dance I'm sorry if I bother to write it here, just try to be more objective in my comments and do not try to discredit anyone, I love the Russian school and many of his positions I defend myself because I was trained in it, but I think a criticism aimed at the improvement thereof, may be productive for everyone, not only enticed into the same childish comments

@theball3rina They are difficult, and they also don’t look good on everybody. They definitely don’t look good on Zakharova. On the other hand, Natalia Makarova did them the same way and she was about the farthest thing from a natural turner - The Greatest Ballerina Who Could Not Turn - but her mechanical action in these Russian fouettes have a smoothness and polish about them that Zakharova is lacking.
she has too high arches to be really perfect in fouettes - too hard to keep balance. as a result she looks weak. and - she is not kitri at all. p.s. but of course she's a phenomenon and one of the greatest ballet stars.
iv figured it out! the legwork is amazing BUT the arms are weak and very un-kitri and sometimes she sits in her hips too much. but other than that you have to say they are amazing! (:
Svetlana may be AMAZING but her fouettes are NOT... just see Tamara Rojo and Marianela Nuñez, they kick Svetlana's skinny ass in fouettes! I know Svetlana is an ICON, and yes i love her too, but that doesn't mean she's perfect...
@88888Di88888 Really ? You do sound bitter. Svetlana's fouettes are still more expressive, more controlled and faster. She is not off music, at least..
I dont think these ar regualr i think there russian because in russian you do kinda grand ba ma to the side insted of goign form the front to the side so yeah

really good but not amazing. Fouettes are so hard to do there are few ballerinas who can make them look graceful. It's not a matter of technique either, it's just some people can do pretty fouettes and others can't.
@sggidlyrehc me either, actually. they look weird... maybe it's because she's going straight side instead of front side. And it looks like her foot is just kinda flicking out there. And her arms are really high when she goes for the passe... its just awkward lol
@ILoveFriedFetus Why isn't she? Along with Vishneva, Osipova, and Semionova, she dominates the ballet world and almost every young dancer dreams of being half as good as she and the others mentioned are.
That was AMAZING! But she looks so skinny :(

She's a great dancer, we all know, but I don't like how she KICKS her leg out.

I'm not sure why I don't like the fouettes...

@sggidlyrehc I think the fouettes are perfect, but the problem is she is not Kitri, she didn't get into the character!

@sggidlyrehc
because here arms are quite strange in first position and her right leg opens in second almost too perfectly!
Annevienne 3 months ago
@sggidlyrehc its probably cuz the way she does fouettes she goes out and immediatly back in, she doesn't a full half circle around.
BroadwayGirl131 3 months ago
@sggidlyrehc me either, actually. they look weird... maybe it's because she's going straight side instead of front side. And it looks like her foot is just kinda flicking out there. And her arms are really high when she goes for the passe... its just awkward lol

@sggidlyrehc I know right she does them oddly... putting her leg straight to seconde

@sggidlyrehc Same. It's because they are not smooth. they are very choppy and staccato. Not particularly pleasing to the eyes. lol

She is the best in the world today.

@thach0x0 wow, you obviously dont follow the world of professional ballet if you think she's the best dancer of today's times. seriously.

@ILoveFriedFetus well ... you obviously are retarded !!!
GREATballetDANCER 3 months ago
@ILoveFriedFetus Why isn't she? Along with Vishneva, Osipova, and Semionova, she dominates the ballet world and almost every young dancer dreams of being half as good as she and the others mentioned are.
