Awesome video!!! I have spent the past 6 years learning about the deaf community, I honestly don't agree with cochlear but I do feel it is the persons choice and whatever makes them happy, but to choice make their choice for a child because you feel you want them to fit into your world is wrong. This is a great video and hopefully it changes the ignorance of others.
there are tons of arguments on both sides of CI's. I personally don't agree with them, even though I'm hearing. God made you deaf. I kind of doubt He would want someone to go into your brain and re-wire it just so you can hear a robot-like sound all the time. It's not hearing. Don't get me wrong, modern medicine is INCREDIBLE! The fact that you can take someone who is deaf and make them "hear" is truly amazing. As for me and my beliefs, I don't think changing who God made you is worth it.
Goodness, you really had me disturbed and going. I really got pretty emotionally mad at you for that. But now, i am ok and i see your point. Thank you for sharing that.
I knew it was fake the whole time. Great lesson. I'm saying that as a hearing person. You all need to stop freaking out. His point is it hurts some deaf people when hearing families force their children to hear without their consent. No need to get your knickers in a twist.
OMGHHKP i was so happy at the end. At the beginning i was so sad for the kid cuz he was bieng forced to be deaf then i found out it was a prank i became silent
Good video! At first I was like :o then at the end I was like good on you! :) I think it should be the kids choice if they want to be able to hear or not. Cute dog :D
it's cruel flof you tobtake your son's hearing away from him just because you're deaf and want him to be. maybe his hearing would degenarte when he got older! i can understand you wwanting himbto he deaf, but making him deaf through surgery? that's inhumane and wrong.
OMG! I kind of had the idea all along where this was going but I still did not expect it to impact me like this! Thank you so much for making this video! It may help hearing people to better understand the conundrum faced by Deaf parents everyday! Great job!
In the beginning, I was like man thats just wrong u dick! then I paused halfway thru the video to read the comments just to check if this shits real but no its all a prank lol. Well played dickhead.
@nla2247 no he didn't, he said it was all a prank. That's a persons surgery, and why would you make a dog deaf purposely? I think that would be considered animal abuse
I was so mad at first but I forced myself to watch until the end. I was thinking, why would a deaf family force their son into deafness when most people that are deaf absolutely hate to be forced to be hearing.
Boy, you had me going for a while. Hey, did you do this to the dog for real? This will be an excellent video for my sign language classes.... what an impact! Good plot, but you owe me for the heart pills! Ha!
Oh haha you scared me to death and I almost pissed off but u got me lol.
I was deaf mother.I have three hearing kids.it is noting to bother me for real.they are my blood kids I love em.
Well the parents make decision about they wanted to put their own deaf children on c.I they should know kids seen scared and crying so deaf parents are too
Well that's crazy i dont against hearing and deaf parents for c.i and become deaf children.they are real stupid just tip.tkc
This is bullshit. Why would you take away your kids hearing just because you want him to be deaf. Im hearing but i love deaf peiple to the fullest. Now he will have to grow up in a harder life not knowing what happening in his surroundings. Taking away his hearing is taking away his life. He shoukdnt have to be deaf if dont want to be.
@TheCarrot1975 I am not against CI's, however, I am against doctors telling parents give your child a CI and they will hear. And then they tell them to NOT use ASL. If that is the option then I would forego the surgery and sign to my Deag child. But if they want a CI and still embrace their deafness with ASL and exposing them to deaf culture, then more power to them.
I followed the whole thing and thought you were crazy...until the end. I totally agree that it should be te kids decision because they have to live with it.
The only problem with letting them decide at 18 is that by then their speach is so delayed. My son is deaf, he is 6 years and was fitted with hearing aids last year for the first time. He LOVES them and begs me to put them on him each morning. Now, don't judge, because he also knows sign language and I sign with him all the time, so I think at 5 years old they can decide, you don't need to wait until they are 18 to find out...
Deaf children are not exactly catered to in the American (and Canadian) school system, making it difficult for those whom are hearing impaired to truly get a full education, and be on the same level as the rest of the public, intelligence-wise. However, your comparison is a little unorthodox, it's a touchy issue with the hearing-enabled people, which is perfectly fine with me. It makes a good point. However, you really have to think about the possibilities that one could achieve with a CI.
Interesting notions you've presented in this video. While I agree completely that forcing a CI upon deaf children is a little unnecessary, one has to think about the possibilities which can be derived from this implantation. I'm a deaf person, myself - and I was implanted with a CI at the young, young age of 4. Of course, I know you will object to this, however - I have to say, I'm quite thankful for it. ~More in the next post.
The rejection by the deaf community of the ability for deaf people to hear and possess speech skills, instead of embracing that ideal, is short-sighted.
I just wish that my parents had the foresight to teach me ASL simultaneously because certainly, I along with most deaf children, have the intelligence to develop our hearing/speech skills along with our ASL language skills. I understand the point that the man in the video was making, but I do not at all find myself to be in agreement, and it is unfortunate that my opinion is against the establishment. *MORE -- last one
Of course there is a little give and take here, and each particular child warrants a different set of considerations. The notion that parents "force" the CI onto their deaf children is ridiculous. My parents did not force the CI on me, they made the decision to have me implanted because they wanted me to have the option of hearing and the ability to develop my speech. If I want to be deaf, I can just turn the implant off. *MORE
We have also robbed them of the critical hearing skills that the brain develops during infancy to the early toddler years. If a child is born without a leg should we as parents, wait until that child is 18 years old to give the child the choice of a prosthetic leg? No. We as parents, are charged with the responsibilities of caring for them, and making choices based on their best interests because they are unable to do so at such a young age. *MORE
The decision by parents to implant their child is NOT a rejection of their deafness. It is accepting the reality that they cannot hear and taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact of deafness on their child's development. Furthermore, if we wait until the deaf patient is 18, then language development is inhibited; we have essentially robbed them of any chance at experiencing a sense that the majority of people have and take for granted; hearing. *MORE
The attitude demonstrated in the video is very prevalent in the deaf community, and to be frank with you, it is insulting. As a person with a cochlear implant (CI), I'm insulted by the opinion that cochlear implants are forced onto deaf children by their parents. I could not disagree more. There is nothing wrong with implanting a deaf child with a CI to give them the option of hearing so that their speech can be developed along with the signed language. *MORE
Just because the story is fake doesn't mean you aren't an asshole. Don't act like deafness isn't a disability that shouldn't becorrected, it is and it should. It's not a fucking culture.
@ ericas you have many good points. And no CIs are not a cure.
Though I'm not sure you understand. You asked in your first post "do you know Deaf with CI?" I am deaf and Deaf. I am also a trained CI advocate so yes I understand and agree with most of your points. However, a CI is still the best thing to do if your child is born deaf in my opinion. A CI will not work for everyone either, but it's the option there is. Finally, no most Deaf/deaf people do not have a high reading level. I don't kno
@TheCarrot1975: Studies have shown that the most successful Deaf Adult are those that had Deaf parents or are from the 5% of hearing parents that sign at home. They grow up as critical thinking, socially appropriate adults that function in both hearing and Deaf worlds and are truly bilingual. Their reading and writing abilities in English are equivalent to hearing peers. CI or not, ASL must be used with Deaf babies from day one. CI is NOT a cure!
@TheCarrot1975: do you know Deaf with CI? I have worked in the Deaf community for 15 years and CI's are nothing more than powerful hearing aids. I have seen deaf teenagers entering high school with CI and have no language. Without "natural" language acquisition from birth to 5 actual brain damage can occur (retardation of dendrites from non-use). Selfish "hearing" parents who are more concerned with "speech" than with brain development.
Those of you who know CIs are the best option for kids born deaf:
It doesn't do us any good to throw our pearls to pigs. These people just can't understand. Arguing with them will only make us frustrated. These Deaf pride extremists will loose in the end. Politics will eventually burry them while they are still painting their own caricature of the issue.
I LOVE IT! That was awesome. I understood what he was saying from the beginning, so the ending wasn't surprising to me. Deafness is a culture and it should be embraced more readily by mainstream America. I love how he went about this, and I'm sure some people were irritated or upset by it.
@MrTheBumjack: I will not comment to you with anything more except this: do some research on Deaf Culture and ASL before commenting about a linguistic and cultural minority group that you obviously know nothing about.
of course deaf children should get cochlear implants. wtf is wrong with you? its always an advantage to be able to hear. if its possible to give a child the ability to hear you shouldn't wait til they're 18 so they have to grow up differently and be put at such a huge disadvantage in all areas of life.
...like a hearing person and their language development is delayed which leads to emotional, social, and cognitive issues later in life. Learn ASL! That is Deaf child's natural language!
@ericas46 i agree that the parent should learn asl and encourage there child even with the CI to learn ASL. My son has a CI and we are a sign and voice house. I try and get him out to any event in our area such as deaf chats (coffees). It makes it hard though when people try and judge your choices before even considering your reasons. I don't think the CI is for everyone. If they are not willing to put in the work it shouldn't be done.
This video is great! Whatever Hearies out there think of Deafies as having a subpar existence: it's not. They have a language and a culture that unfortunately 90% of hearing parents never learn for their Deaf child. It's not so much giving them a CI, it's implanting them then thinking it makes them hearing- which it doesn't. Hearing parents, along with doctors, give them a CI and tell them to reject ASL and Deaf culture and force them to be hearing-which they are not. They still cannot hear li
I understand your ethic, but unless you understand the science portion of cochlear implant, you don't have much ground to stand on. First, Sign language lacks important "filler" words that English contains. One sign can assume several words combined. These "filler" words suddenly turn into confusing noise once audition is introduced.
Once you reach a certain age, language specific neurons in the brain deteriorate and auditory processing is merely impossible. The lack of experience with articulatory cues and prosody makes processing language difficult and stressful.
God damn guys wait till the video is over to make your comments. I swear that half of these stupid ass comments wouldn't have been posted if you had the patience to watch the whole thing.
Much like the subject of circumcision, huh? Only a lot more important. Maybe a bit closer to parents of hermaphroditic children who get them surgically altered to one gender or another. I understand the need to preserve your culture, but that is something that can be taught outside of direct experience. I don't think it's a fully fair comparison.
Also, is there no ASL word for Brazil? It's been forever since I attempted to learn ASL, but it looked like you 'spelled signed' Brazil.
Hi! Good video! It is good to see and think about the perspective of d/Deaf parents with a hearing child. I know it is a hard topic and the goal is what is best for the child and his/her future. Bilingual, bicultural, biliterate kids. Thanks for posting!! SH
...I'm sorry, I disagree with your decision. I think you should have waited until it was HIS choice. If he didn't want to do it, he shouldn't have had to loose his hearing.
and I am choosing not to mainstream him becasue I want him to understand who he is. It isnt a quick fix. I wasnt looking to fix him. There is a lot of work on both ends when getting implanted. I know that getting a implant is not for everyone and I resepct thoes who choose not to get it done. But at the same time I think the same amount of respect should be given for thoes who choose it. Not only am I learning sign my 2 year old hearing daughter and the rest of my family is as well.
I am a parent of a deaf child with a cochlear implant. I choose the cochlear not to fix him but in order to give him a advantage in this world that we live in. The fact remains my son is still deaf without his cochlear and because of that fact I am following the proper steps to ensure that he is able to succeed inside the hearing world and inside the deaf world. I am paying for college so I can learn to be fluent in sign language as he is learning as well. He is attending a school for the deaf.
Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pity a poor baby. Don't turn Deaf from Hearing or Hearing from Deaf. You took that away from him for your own selfish reasons. Please don't copy this. some children will realize someday and they might hate their parents.
This is a very interesting way to look at the topic of putting cochlears on children. I'm at University for ASL Studies and I've taken courses on Deaf Culture and Deaf History. I personally believe that babies should not get implants because they don't even have an opportunity to experience Deaf Culture. At the same time, for language development, younger is better and if the child will be raised totally oral anyway with no exposure to DC, then why not? It's a hard subject. thanks for the video!
Giving them the implant gives them choices. They can always have it removed. Would you be up in arms about me choosing to teach my children more than one language, as well? Because that's exactly what this is. I cannot believe that anybody would choose to limit their children any more than absolutely necessary. If you let them wait until they're old enough to choose, then you've already chosen for them - irreversibly. Give them the choice - but make it an actual choice. Give them options.
I find both to be offensive because it's trying to force someone into a culture. But what makes the hearing man worse is that the child will never learn a language and never understand until they grow up and it's much too late. I think everyone needs to watch For A Deaf Son. It will make things a little more understandable from a deaf perspective, Oh and by the way, i'm a hearing woman proud to have deaf friends.
You can say that this is messed up, and it slightly is, but think of it in reverse, hearing parents are devastated when they find out their child is deaf and a lot of hearing parents try to force their child into a hearing world. So yeah, you can get mad at this man for making his son deaf, but a hearing man should receive just as much anger for trying to make his son hearing.
wow! how horribe to take away your sons rights like that i know thats your culture i am an asl student and I know what u did bro is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! poor kid cried his eyes out because he got to hear beautiful music and u took that away from him for your own selfish reasons. thats like telling ur kid he's not good enough and forcing him to have plastic surgery. i'm discusted
omgggg i agree with this, im hearing but i would never want my kid if they were deaf to get somethingt o make them hear unless they wanted it, i love signing and i hope they would enjoy it too
Wow, dang was I mad at you at first. I'm hearing but I love to sign and love to talk to the deaf. I do understand where you're coming from. They should let them pick what they want.
@theXwarewolfsXmine i agree. I too am hearing. I take ASL in high school i am currently in level 3. I have seen many deaf people and always want to interact with them. Once a month, My teacher has a after school activity where (hearing) signing college students come to interact only in sign and it is a very good experience becuase it is always totally silent in the room and I realize what it would kind of be like being deaf. My teacher last year showed this video and I was so upset about it.....
take away their language and then call them disabled for that? Seems a little unfair to me! I think the majority group (in this case hearing) always thinks the minority (deaf) wants to be just like them! Too often people confuse intelligence with speech! Spoken or Signed, that is just the output modality... Language is in the brain! Whoever actually understands Deaf culture/language everything will understand his point!
@LagunaZurfer Hey :) how did you get a copy of that? I'm a rookie at how some of this works! did you personally write "charbabe1986 wrote and later removed:"..... either way i hope you agree with my point back then haha. i removed it because i was sick of argueing with that guy
You're correcting a physical deficiency, dumbass. It's not the same thing.
People like you were impediments to medical science in the Middle Ages. You're no better than leechers and folk healers. I hope you never have children.
I think it's about how parents think they know what's best for their child, instead of letting the child make their own decisions. Like how a child is born into religion without being given the option to live with or without it.
The message of this video is inherently flawed. If my son was deaf I'd do everything in my power to make him regain his hearing as that will give him a better standard of living. It doesn't mean I hate my son when he's deaf. I understand what you're trying to say, and I apologize for the added ordeals you had to contend with due to being deaf but if there's a better way - you're a fool not to take it.
@thejobloshow just because someone is hearing doesnt mean they have a better standard of living. Define what that even means? what is "if theres a better way!" what exactly is a better way... being hearing? His message isn't flawed, its a perfect message for people who think like you!
@charbabe1986 If you could choose, actually choose from birth, to be deaf or have hearing. What would you pick? Why would you needlessly disable yourself? To prove a point that you're sensitive? Grow up, you get one life, we should try to make it as great as possible.
I'm not against the CI, but I do agree that children should be given a well educated choice. As parents we make so many choices that will inevitably effect our children for the rest of their lives; What religion will he/she practice, what schools will he/she attend, etc. The CI destroys what little hearing the child may have had, and if it is not effective (there is a huge fail rate) then the child will be profoundly Deaf despite the parents efforts.
433 people were too impatient to watch the whole video and understand the point of this story. It's about parents taking a step back and allowing their child to grow with guidance rather than being forced to conform to some set of rigid standards. Everyone's opinion on perfection, morality and being successful are different. It's about time parents realized they aren't God and are definitely not infallible. Forcing surgery upon someone falls under that even though I think hearing is a positive.
I do not agree with this video however he does have good points. If ya'll stop bashing and follow through this video. Take the time to sort your emotions and confusion, you'll see that what he is saying is true.
It's not only the deaf community, its the whole community. It's how the parents envision their children, or force them to do what parent's perceives perfection in their own eyes. But what will happen when your child/red grows up?
Incredibly well done. Couldn't agree more. This coming from a hearing person who has recently changed his viewpoint on the deaf-world. (Thanks to my wife, who is studying to be an interpreter, and to ASL classes). I had the same viewpoint as many on here before I decided to learn more about Deaf culture. I would love to have a deaf child (wouldn't make them get the surgery if they were hearing, though :P).
I think that you had no right to make your son deaf. You should have been happy for him that he could hear. I am apart of the hearing and the deaf world. I was born hearing but over the years I have started to lose my hearing and I am starting to appreciate what I had growing up. I think you were very very wrong. The child had every right to be able to hear!!!!!!
You all are hearing oppressors deaf people are just as smart an capable of learning as us hearing people they can be successful with out CIs they are nice people and moth deaf people like being deaf so if deaf people don't believe in CIs then that's there right
Apparently you are misinformed. Those who have had some hearing before deafness adapt to a CI and usually understand speech the first day. Those who are born deaf will take longer to adapt. But new technology is so close to real hearing that "training" is no different than simply experiencing life again.
Again, it's not "brain" surgery. CIs bypass the inner ear and a thin wire with 22 electrodes, depending on the Company, is placed in the snail like structure of the cochlea.
They should make it law to give kids CIs. And yes it is hearing to the not so smart people who disagree. And no it's not brain surgery - your brain is several inches away from your cochlea. And no one has ever died from a CI surgery - people who say that are lying or repeating what another liar said.
If you don't give your child a CI you hurt them a lot. Children's brains learn to hear at a young age. A C I at 18 years of age will not help them much and they will still have a 5th grade reading level with any written language.
If newer technology comes out that is really any better than the tiny implant they already have then it can be replaced. And no a cord doesn't stick out of their head. Traditional Deafies are, maybe deliberately, uneducated about CIs.
@TheCarrot1975 U've got to be kidding me. That's like saying God never wanted us to be hispanic. Its cutural and clearly you're not very educated on Deaf culture. CIs are and will always be ELECTRONICALLY SIMULATED hearing. You're speech will never be normal nor will you ever completely fit in with hearing people. PLAIN and SIMPLE. I'm FULLY educated about CIs and they do implant electrodes thats not natural.
No no no, if you wait until they are 18 you lose the window of time to develop language and well no matter what it isn't the same. The choice is for the PARENT to make and whether you chose one way or the other, I don't know what the risks are, it should be made. Let them have the implants on and off to get used to being deaf and hearing and then make the choice. I understand your point but being deaf and hearing aren't polar opposites. Is everything PC now? This is ridiculous.
When I started watching this, obviously you didn't make your son deaf, and I was trying to figure out what your point was. However, the very last minute, I couldn't agree with you more. GIVE THEM A CHOICE! I have dear friends who are deaf and were candidates for ci when they were children, but their parents wanted them to have a choice. Now they live in both the hearing and D worlds. GIVE THEM A CHOICE!
"Youre funny. My son is still DEAF. And always will be! We love everything about him, and embrace him wholly. We just gave him other options in life. Like getting him a pair of glasses if he had trouble seeing, or leg braces if he had trouble walking. Would you be apposed to that? He is a deaf boy that has the option to hear and speak and listen as he wishes. It was my obligation as a parent to provide him the best life possible, and this is what we choice. We are happy! End of story."
The point is that why should they be changed if they were born that way? Let the kids be! If theyre raised thinking they needed to be "fixed" with aids or an implant, what does that do to a 6 y/o? Thinking youre different and broken and you need all this technology to be able to fit in and participate in society. Losing your hearing as a hearing person is the same as losing your 'Deafness' as a Deaf person, losing your whole identity, language, and the culture and community that comes with it.
@RavenBells Anybody who believes that being born deaf is a "gift" from God is a fucking retard. Anybody who is against helping those with hearing difficulties is an asshole.
I've struggled with hearing loss, and ear diseases my whole life. It is not a "gift", it's a disadvantage. Clearly the "gift" is actually being able to hear.
The stupid ideas of some people truly infuriate me at times. What next, people smashing their glasses so that they can have the "gift" of blindness?
@itsMUSICY I totally agree. I don't have your story but I think it is disturbing to try and make deafness out to be something that is just the opposite of hearing.
Thia hasn't change d my opinion. Give the kid the implants and let him get used to it.. if by 18 he wants to throw away his will to hear and loose all his friends and ability to hear let him ... his many would actually want to do that?
@snaffus Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I took ASL, and there for am not as naive as the rest of you hearing people. The only thing I pity the deaf for is having to deal with ignorant hearing people.
@InnocentOnPaper Is it not true that being deaf is considered a handicap?
Is it not true that making a child deaf, goes against 'making the best of the child'.
Of course, you may still call me ignorant or whatnot, i am just venting my viewpoint this topic, as a person with the ability to hear, just like the majority lf the human population.
@snaffus To the state, the government, the world -being deaf may be mean being handicapped. But to the deaf, it's just who they are. You can call ANYONE handicapped if you'd like, NONE of us are perfect. Does that mean we "Fix" it? NO! Perhaps you would agree with the story of Harrison Bergeron. Look it up.
And no one said that they were making children deaf...So just by saying that, you clearly don't understand the message here. Too self-absorbed in something you think is a tragic...
Someone made an image macro of this leaving out the ending, and I practically shat a brick and was about to go out head hunting. I now completely understand your point and if my son or daughter is born deaf, I will wait until they are old enough to decide on their own if they want to hear (maybe a little earlier than 18 though, maybe as soon as they express interest in receiving an implant and understand what it entails.)
It's much, much harder for someone to learn to speak and process auditory information at 18, rather than as a baby or very young child. Why not raise them in both cultures, and allow them to choose either at any time? When the external half of a cochlear implant is removed, you hear nothing. So what's the harm in giving them the ability to both speak and sign, and then let them make a fully informed decision when they are 18?
I LOVE YOUR VID i think that it was amazing that you made that i want to be able to sign as well as a deaf person but as i've not got anyone to sign with me it kinda sucks.....i've signed since i was 7 and my signing has gotten ALOT better over the past 10 years or so...it just would be nice to understand the deaf world a bit better.
yes, I can understand why deaf parents would want a deaf child also. And I can see why hearing parents would want a hearing child also. But they shouldn't have to choose. I know that it would take longer for a deaf child to learn to speak if they chose to hear, but it should be their choice. Not their parents choice.
This really turns the table around doesn't it? I'm hearing, learning ASL and up until now I've always believed that children receiving an implant was always a good thing. I didn't understand why wouldn't a parent want to give their deaf child an opportunity to hear- especially after watching the youtube videos about the young Deaf girl and her family. This really opened my views about cochlear implants and the effect it can have on deaf people. You have definitely changed my mind. Thank you.
I love the message in your video. I am Deaf and proud of it. I also love reading the *audist* messages and the ones by people who obviously did not watch the entire video and missed your message completely.
man i was disgusted with the video i could never imagine taking my sons hearing. i wanted to cry and then i wanted to beat the crap out of you, i am so glad that this was a prank. and i am sorry your family tried to give you surgery to make you hear its like they are say that they dont accept you as the way you are. But as along as we accept ourselves they will have to accpet you..
Oh my gosh you scared me so bad. I agree with you though. i think they should be able to decide on their own if they want it or not. I am hearing but I love signing. I plan to teach my children sign whether they are deaf or hearing. I want them to know the language and use it in life wherever they are. Thank you for this video. I plan to share it with friends and family and get their intake on it. :)
But you scared me so badly, that you really did that. I'm so very glad it was a prank. This is a wonderful video, and I'm sure very eye-opening to many. Thank you so much for doing this. I sincerely hope everyone watches the video to the very end.
@MrKTJW5685 its what so many people go through all the time, i think it was very educational to see it in the way it was presented, because if you try and explain this subject to anyone, they do not understand as good as they understand here, i think it was an excellent example to set. Thanks!
I am hearing, but take ASL courses in college by a Deaf instructor. We often discuss things like this; how it is such a difficult decision whether or not to have your child hearing or not. This is a great video because this puts us hearing people into the Deaf communities' shoes... no question. I agree that it should be completely up to the child whether he or she wants to hear. They are born the way they are, and if society cannot accept that, then society needs to change. NOT the person.
I am hard of hearing and I came across this video. At first I was in complete shock but I completely agree with you in the end! I've been living in the hearing world and deaf world and I have honestly found more comfort in the deaf community than the hearing.
thank you for your video. I agree parents should not make that choice for their children. I am hard of hearing, I grew up hearing, in the eyes of most people around me I "look" hearing. I have accepted who I am, I wouldn't change it for the world. The Deaf community and deaf culture is an amazing thing. Deaf culture is more understanding and more accepting than MOST hearing people will EVER be. Life is never easy, hearing or deaf, accept the way you were made and help others along the way!

However, you really have to think about the possibilities that one could achieve with a CI.
xxXMETALxxGEARXxx 1 month ago
Interesting notions you've presented in this video. While I agree completely that forcing a CI upon deaf children is a little unnecessary, one has to think about the possibilities which can be derived from this implantation. I'm a deaf person, myself - and I was implanted with a CI at the young, young age of 4. Of course, I know you will object to this, however - I have to say, I'm quite thankful for it. ~More in the next post.

The rejection by the deaf community of the ability for deaf people to hear and possess speech skills, instead of embracing that ideal, is short-sighted.
AndreaSeidel1981 1 month ago
I just wish that my parents had the foresight to teach me ASL simultaneously because certainly, I along with most deaf children, have the intelligence to develop our hearing/speech skills along with our ASL language skills. I understand the point that the man in the video was making, but I do not at all find myself to be in agreement, and it is unfortunate that my opinion is against the establishment. *MORE -- last one
AndreaSeidel1981 1 month ago
Of course there is a little give and take here, and each particular child warrants a different set of considerations. The notion that parents "force" the CI onto their deaf children is ridiculous. My parents did not force the CI on me, they made the decision to have me implanted because they wanted me to have the option of hearing and the ability to develop my speech. If I want to be deaf, I can just turn the implant off. *MORE
AndreaSeidel1981 1 month ago
We have also robbed them of the critical hearing skills that the brain develops during infancy to the early toddler years. If a child is born without a leg should we as parents, wait until that child is 18 years old to give the child the choice of a prosthetic leg? No. We as parents, are charged with the responsibilities of caring for them, and making choices based on their best interests because they are unable to do so at such a young age. *MORE
AndreaSeidel1981 1 month ago
The decision by parents to implant their child is NOT a rejection of their deafness. It is accepting the reality that they cannot hear and taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact of deafness on their child's development. Furthermore, if we wait until the deaf patient is 18, then language development is inhibited; we have essentially robbed them of any chance at experiencing a sense that the majority of people have and take for granted; hearing. *MORE
AndreaSeidel1981 1 month ago
The attitude demonstrated in the video is very prevalent in the deaf community, and to be frank with you, it is insulting. As a person with a cochlear implant (CI), I'm insulted by the opinion that cochlear implants are forced onto deaf children by their parents. I could not disagree more. There is nothing wrong with implanting a deaf child with a CI to give them the option of hearing so that their speech can be developed along with the signed language. *MORE

CI is NOT a cure!
ericas46 1 month ago
@TheCarrot1975: do you know Deaf with CI? I have worked in the Deaf community for 15 years and CI's are nothing more than powerful hearing aids. I have seen deaf teenagers entering high school with CI and have no language. Without "natural" language acquisition from birth to 5 actual brain damage can occur (retardation of dendrites from non-use). Selfish "hearing" parents who are more concerned with "speech" than with brain development.

of course deaf children should get cochlear implants. wtf is wrong with you? its always an advantage to be able to hear. if its possible to give a child the ability to hear you shouldn't wait til they're 18 so they have to grow up differently and be put at such a huge disadvantage in all areas of life.
MrTheBumjack 1 month ago
...like a hearing person and their language development is delayed which leads to emotional, social, and cognitive issues later in life. Learn ASL! That is Deaf child's natural language!
ericas46 1 month ago

These "filler" words suddenly turn into confusing noise once audition is introduced.
fsusweetiexoxo 1 month ago
Once you reach a certain age, language specific neurons in the brain deteriorate and auditory processing is merely impossible. The lack of experience with articulatory cues and prosody makes processing language difficult and stressful.

It's a hard subject. thanks for the video!
srenrew 2 months ago
Giving them the implant gives them choices. They can always have it removed. Would you be up in arms about me choosing to teach my children more than one language, as well? Because that's exactly what this is. I cannot believe that anybody would choose to limit their children any more than absolutely necessary. If you let them wait until they're old enough to choose, then you've already chosen for them - irreversibly. Give them the choice - but make it an actual choice. Give them options.
kaitikaiba 2 months ago
I find both to be offensive because it's trying to force someone into a culture. But what makes the hearing man worse is that the child will never learn a language and never understand until they grow up and it's much too late. I think everyone needs to watch For A Deaf Son. It will make things a little more understandable from a deaf perspective, Oh and by the way, i'm a hearing woman proud to have deaf friends.
Ellbell91 2 months ago
You can say that this is messed up, and it slightly is, but think of it in reverse, hearing parents are devastated when they find out their child is deaf and a lot of hearing parents try to force their child into a hearing world. So yeah, you can get mad at this man for making his son deaf, but a hearing man should receive just as much anger for trying to make his son hearing.

I'm not against the CI, but I do agree that children should be given a well educated choice. As parents we make so many choices that will inevitably effect our children for the rest of their lives; What religion will he/she practice, what schools will he/she attend, etc. The CI destroys what little hearing the child may have had, and if it is not effective (there is a huge fail rate) then the child will be profoundly Deaf despite the parents efforts.
chrissmiss321 2 months ago
433 people were too impatient to watch the whole video and understand the point of this story. It's about parents taking a step back and allowing their child to grow with guidance rather than being forced to conform to some set of rigid standards. Everyone's opinion on perfection, morality and being successful are different. It's about time parents realized they aren't God and are definitely not infallible. Forcing surgery upon someone falls under that even though I think hearing is a positive.

Not eve
TheCarrot1975 3 months ago
They should make it law to give kids CIs. And yes it is hearing to the not so smart people who disagree. And no it's not brain surgery - your brain is several inches away from your cochlea. And no one has ever died from a CI surgery - people who say that are lying or repeating what another liar said.
Another deaf person.
TheCarrot1975 3 months ago
If you don't give your child a CI you hurt them a lot. Children's brains learn to hear at a young age. A C I at 18 years of age will not help them much and they will still have a 5th grade reading level with any written language.
If newer technology comes out that is really any better than the tiny implant they already have then it can be replaced. And no a cord doesn't stick out of their head. Traditional Deafies are, maybe deliberately, uneducated about CIs.

This is not reasonable, and a very poor comparison.
Giving a child the opportunity to hear is giving them access to another one of our senses which protect us and warns us of danger.
Seeing,Smelling,Hearing all warns us of potential danger and certain situations.
Taking away the hearing of a child is TAKING AWAY that extra bit of protection it offers.
Sure sign language is great but you don't have to be deaf to learn it you could teach a hearing child sign language if that's all you care about.

What next, people smashing their glasses so that they can have the "gift" of blindness?
itsMUSICY 4 months ago
@itsMUSICY I totally agree. I don't have your story but I think it is disturbing to try and make deafness out to be something that is just the opposite of hearing.

Thia hasn't change d my opinion. Give the kid the implants and let him get used to it.. if by 18 he wants to throw away his will to hear and loose all his friends and ability to hear let him ... his many would actually want to do that?

@iRockDBadd3st Because it's as easy as that? Your view is completely obscured.

By this logic, it's not okay to have a child, because you don't know if they want to be alive.

Denying a child the ability to hear is preposterous.
snaffus 4 months ago
@snaffus Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I took ASL, and there for am not as naive as the rest of you hearing people. The only thing I pity the deaf for is having to deal with ignorant hearing people.
InnocentOnPaper 4 months ago
@InnocentOnPaper Is it not true that being deaf is considered a handicap?
Is it not true that making a child deaf, goes against 'making the best of the child'.
Of course, you may still call me ignorant or whatnot, i am just venting my viewpoint this topic, as a person with the ability to hear, just like the majority lf the human population.
It all boils down to this: social relativism.
snaffus 4 months ago
@snaffus To the state, the government, the world -being deaf may be mean being handicapped. But to the deaf, it's just who they are. You can call ANYONE handicapped if you'd like, NONE of us are perfect. Does that mean we "Fix" it? NO! Perhaps you would agree with the story of Harrison Bergeron. Look it up.
And no one said that they were making children deaf...So just by saying that, you clearly don't understand the message here. Too self-absorbed in something you think is a tragic...
InnocentOnPaper 4 months ago
@InnocentOnPaper Ah yes, 'relative' is the word you're looking for.

@snaffus I wasn't searching for a word, clearly, but thanks for trying.

Cholera implants help. If a deaf child at the age of 10 says they want to hear then parents should be allowed to make adesign
Animerockshard13 4 months ago
Someone made an image macro of this leaving out the ending, and I practically shat a brick and was about to go out head hunting. I now completely understand your point and if my son or daughter is born deaf, I will wait until they are old enough to decide on their own if they want to hear (maybe a little earlier than 18 though, maybe as soon as they express interest in receiving an implant and understand what it entails.)
TheSilentFool 4 months ago
It's much, much harder for someone to learn to speak and process auditory information at 18, rather than as a baby or very young child. Why not raise them in both cultures, and allow them to choose either at any time? When the external half of a cochlear implant is removed, you hear nothing. So what's the harm in giving them the ability to both speak and sign, and then let them make a fully informed decision when they are 18?

I LOVE YOUR VID i think that it was amazing that you made that i want to be able to sign as well as a deaf person but as i've not got anyone to sign with me it kinda sucks.....i've signed since i was 7 and my signing has gotten ALOT better over the past 10 years or so...it just would be nice to understand the deaf world a bit better.
pandabear20075 5 months ago
yes, I can understand why deaf parents would want a deaf child also. And I can see why hearing parents would want a hearing child also. But they shouldn't have to choose. I know that it would take longer for a deaf child to learn to speak if they chose to hear, but it should be their choice. Not their parents choice.
TheRantsOfABookWorm 5 months ago

You shocked me so badly.
I was already in agreement with you.
But you scared me so badly, that you really did that. I'm so very glad it was a prank. This is a wonderful video, and I'm sure very eye-opening to many. Thank you so much for doing this. I sincerely hope everyone watches the video to the very end.

Do not make a joke about this ever again because i find this very offensive.
Don't get me wrong but it is OUR job to educate those hearing people who have a deaf child.
MrKTJW5685 6 months ago
