@GJNCA Go to bn.com. I first read this in paperback when I was about 3 weeks from my 15th birthday and I finished it in 2 days. I was laying in my bed when I finished it and then I layed my head down and cried. I never did that before and I've never read anything ever since then that touched like that book did. Read the book before you watch the movie. If you do order it maybe you'll let me know what you thought of it.
I read the book and I cried at the end. I never cry when I read a book or when I watch a movie, but this was so sad, so unfair. I wish I could watch the whole movie here on Youtube!
Bogarts statement in court at the end of the movie is a stinging indictment against society which is duplicitous in the creation of criminaility when it fails to intervene on behalf of at risk children and youth.
i read the book version many yrs ago, it was much different; the kid in that was a member of street gang that picked up old gay men, beat them up to steal their money, the lead kid ended up haveing an affair with one of the men and was then so over come with guilt he killed the guy, that is what he was on trial for, murder. good book and shocking for the time, 1940s. the sequal was about heroin junkies and was even better. shelly winters was the mother and a hop head, james darren the son.
