And what if you reinstall windows et all before the lockdown? I mean, you boot up, somehow get a command prompt to reinstall or change whatever, all before ever getting online and before any rendevouz time expires with the IT server? The laptop never *knows* it has been stolen.

if you want to encrypt your files you are best using truecrypt and using an extensive password. Altho they can reformat the system unless you put passwords in place. Even then they still will not get your files. What makes you think if someone steals a laptop and it gets bricked through this method .. What makes you think they wont just smash it then just for the hell of it ???
