When the Congress of the United States passed a amendment to the Constiution
that would keep blacks enslaved forever and the Southern States threw it into the trash can, it took the moral aspect away from the United States also.
Longstreet foresaw the futility of Pickett's charge, but he was a good soldier, who followed orders & trusted Lee's wisdom.
Lee believed the time & place had come at Gettysburg to go all in.. and ultimately Longstreet went with him. It's a shame that Longstreet was demonized for so long, bcuz he was an honorable soldier & man.
@GeorgeWashingtonX Longstreet was demonized mainly for his postwar politics. He refused to buy into the Lost Cause sentimentalist nonsense, which came about largely because of Jubal Early. A strong case could be made that it was Early on the First Day (Culp's Hill) or Stuart (failing to reconnoiter the enemy) who really 'lost it all at Gettysburg'- rather than Longstreet.
@BenAliGtor hey brother... I'm looking @ your other comments on this vid.. & I like your observation on the beards in 'Gettysburg' (chuckle). I was a teenager when this movie dropped, but I still remember thinking, couldn't guys in a movie of this stature, who are cast months before shooting.. make an effort to grow their own beards (?) It looks like Tom Berringer is wearing a squirrel on his face.
@olsson1985 General Armistead also knew tthat he attack would fail. That is why he gave General Longstreet his personal Bible that was to be sent to General Handcock's wife. He knew that he was probably going to die. He did. A few days after the battle.
I've seen better beards on dimestore Santas..but the Longstreet character was crucial to the movie, and the real James Longstreet was a valued lieutenant of Lee throughout that war.
@BenAliGtor I totally agree with you. You would think with the budget they had they could have come up with more realistic looking beards than that. Speaking of beards, I know it's a rather trivial matter, but I've always wondered what Longstreet looked like without his. I've seen "prebeard" pictures of Lee, Grant, Jackson, Stuart, and A.P. Hill, among others, but none of Old Pete. I thought everyone who passed through West Point sat for a portrait, but I could be wrong.

@360Nomad
True had they done that at least before mr Lincolns proclamation it would have taken the "moral" issue away from the U.S.A!

@GeorgeWashingtonX considering it took the actual officers more then a year to grow their beards I doubt a few months would have covered it.
