@BLWN454 If i can get this right, the stock 396 registered 364HP-5200 RPM / 426 Torque-3500 RPM. For some reason though, i'm thinking the 70' SS had around 450HP-5600 RPM. The original tachs started orange-heat just about 5800 RPM and redlined at 6500 then topped at 7000. Never had a problem getting them to redline in 4th though either ;)
you got the same year as mine, same eingine to. I plan on throwing a comp big mutha thumper cam in it like my 86 monte carlo ss. Anyway take good care of it man.
holy hell...get a clue. Power steering and power brakes were widely available in 69 and 70. The car in this video likely has both. Still would handle really badly.
show me a forty year old european car that drives and handles as well as my all-original '70 Nova and then we'll talk. taking a car from the 60's or 70's and comparing them to today's cars from anywhere is simply not a valid comparison.
@deathsquad75 - these cars don't HANDLE well at all. my '08 vw jetta handles better than your '70 nova does. your nova is certainly built better and much faster. but handling wise, there's no comparison. today's cars are much lighter and there's been many technological advancements that make today's cars handle better.
Exactly what everyone else said. No power steering or power brakes, suspension today are more updated but now you can take your 1970 or any old car to a dealer and have all the old parts replaced. Get a Fuel Injection engine.. power steering, power brakes, etc. FOR A PRICE OF COURSE
@WestLosHomiez - It's sort of the nostalgia of driving it though too. Only reason my dad sold his Chevelle was because you couldn't drive it in the winter time. Summer was really the only time we took it out. Takes alot of gas, and you couldn't even put 93 in it. Even with the engine unmodified and all factory. Every time we drove ours you needed high octane with some booster in it. Insurance was expensive. It just wasn't worth having. Cost too much to drive it.
@WestLosHomiez - But yeah, he was saying an old European car against this is no comparison. Back then - American cars were the best around. Nobody really even started buying foreign cars until the Oil Embargo hit and lots of people wanted fuel efficient cars that were virtually non-existant on the US market. I'd rather have it all factory without all the junk on it. Just the way they sold them back in 1970. My dad's had a 4-bbl double pumper carb, 3 1/4 cam, gear drive, lots of tweaks.
@hogger129 I agree but fuel injection and computer controls make the engine tuning and reliabilty great ! My brother has a chevy truck with a 498 vortek Big block and it starts evry time runs smooth sorta never has carb problems that the old cars have .
@ruwithlee1970 - Having an ECU and fuel injection also helps fuel economy/efficiency.
It's hard to have a big-block anymore with a lot of horsepower. My dad's would only run on leaded gas with booster in it. Pump gas with booster in it would make the engine knock. And it got 3mpg at that. It was just too expensive to drive anywhere. We only really took it to shows once in awhile and people would steal things off of it. It was more of a Sunday car than anything.
@WestLosHomiez my 68 camaro doesnt need any add on its factory disc power brakes powerstering 2 barrel rodchester carburator i have close to 600 thousand miles since i rebuilted in 1980 and she runs fine today
@deathsquad75 - my parents had a '69 nova. that was back when they made no power steering or power brakes or power anything on nearly all cars. you had to crank the wheel all the way over to make a turn.
without a doubt your 08 jetta handles better. but i doubt a 69 VW would. you know? its the time difference and technology that makes it that way, it just seems like people try to compare a muscle car and say their new car is so much better. well i hope so, lol. it's 40 years newer. or else you got scammed. lol
@deathsquad75 - i agree. well i think cars back then too, american ones were made with much higher quality than alot of other cars from that time. the thing that killed the muscle cars was when they had all those gas shortages back in the 70's and then people started buying toyotas and foreign made stuff because it was more fuel efficient. i don't think there were too many american cars built for fuel efficiency at that time. but i agree. people compare two different things alot.
@deathsquad75 - The only people that are comparing new cars against these old muscle cars are the guys with the Supras, Evos, Eclipses with the twin-turbos, giant wings, weight-adding body kits, nitrous... I mean if you invested all the time and energy and money into a muscle car as some of those tools do, you'd be coming out there with a dragster, 1100hp on nitrous, really high octane gas that you can't get at the pump... i keep my cars mostly all factory.
Why are yall comparing NEW European exotics to OLD American Muscle? That's not a fair comparison. I would take this Chevelle over any Eurotrash you could offer me.
@starchief59 you don't have to hate it because its european. personally i'm patriotic and i would fight for my country if need be, but i still have tastes for all three flavor of cars !
most muscle cars handle like crap because they are so old. i mean my car is like 41 years, but i have upgraded my suspension and i get a pretty nice ride, and exotic cars are very exspensive so they should be faster, but we've got some that would beat the brakes off them!
seriously. muscle cars handle like crap and there's plenty of exotic cars that will smoke it.
but nothing feels as good as sitting behind the wheel of a big block while cruising down the street. it's the same feeling you would get if you were driving a ferrari.
I can understand why people would want to own these cars for nostalgia, but they really do not handle, or drive well. American Mentality=build a car that goes fast but handles like a flying elephant, European Mentality=build a car that is fast, light, aerodynamic, and handles beautifully like a sexy woman.
I love it when I go for a ride on you tube wish it were longer.Nice ride you have wish I had a 4 speed in mine got the torqueflite in the old dodge but still fun to drive. Happy motoring
sweet ride gotta love that 396. matching numbers? knew a guy who dropped a valve in a 396 because he reved it to 7k lol what was sad was it was a numbers matching motor and he cracked the block. and as for that "get on it" guy he doesnt know what these cars are about. a sweet sound, smooth cruise and more power than you ever need to use lol
Thanks for your kind words and yes its totally matching numbers 3rd owner as far as idiots commenting like that, probably just a little kid using mommys computer, good to see another muscle car lover who knoows you dont have to beat the crap out of them to show them off,,,thnk you,

Equipped with the same tech......muscle car will tear the doors off an exotic.
Exotics are nice. I sat in a ferrari, and it was not that comfortable! The guy gave me a ride home.
Now my '50 has the original interior, and it's the most comfortable car.
I also have a '98 BMW 540i, it's smoked a couple, but those were small blocks.
Me and My brother raced a big block equipped, and got it handed to us.
I agree, it's basically the same feeling.
