I had an Inspiron 1150 as I recall, like the D600 series, sorta. And I took that one apart, even have spare parts from an extra mobo I had to replace in that one.
How do today's powerful chips like the Intel i-series, or the AMD Phenom II series survive in such a compact, small environment such as a notebook computer? Don't many of these chips need large heatsinks, and large physical cooling areas, such as are found in large desktop CPU cases? Thanks in advance.
@AudiophileTubes They run on the new Chip sizes (45nm) tech, so that means efficiency allows lower voltage, and in turn, lower heat. If you look at my K23 Sony That one uses a desktop style Pentium 4 with mucho heat. As does the Toshiba Sat A series.
"I do this every few months to keep it running well." ?
That's really wasting time.
OK clean your laptop from dust and stuff, but applying new thermal paste every few months is a waste of time. Thermal paste should hold fine for the long run. At least a year...
@Syboltleffert If your CPU is controlled for duration of use, DO NOT MESS with it, simple as that, only worry over paste if there is critical temp problems
@Syboltleffert Just need some fan and temp monitoring software, I noramlly don't bother seeking them out, but for a Sony Vaio, a damn good idea for protection. Dell has one that works on other Dells, I'm not sure DELL offers it at all, but I found it on TechSpot
@tomgilks Thanks for the answer! And another thing: this thermal paste, if we don't use it, I mean, if we only clean and remove all the old t. paste and assemble the lappy again, does it have any risk of failing, breaking? It's because I'm thinking about cleaning my laptop by myself, but I still don't have this isopropyl and neither the t. paste.
My advice would be to NOT remove the heatsink from the processor unless you are having problems with overheating. The thermal paste is quite important because it fills in the microscopic grooves between the CPU and heatsink. Assembly without thermal paste can cause much higher temperatures. Isopropyl alcohol is available in any drug store. It is also called rubbing alcohol. I recommend using the 99% concentrated stuff. Blow dust from your heatsink/fan with canned air.
I enjoyed the video. I learned a thing or two on how to open up the laptop with this video. I was looking for this "how to" video for a while now. You see, I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop with a broken head phone input. I tried to open it but with no success. After seeing this video, I'm confident I can open the laptop with ease. Thank you.
hmmm , i did the same after i bought my first pc , re install and clean everything specially the heat sink , and the chip set colling sink ... of course instead of using thermo or that silver stuff , i`ve used regular alloy foil up side down and it works well never get`s warm again etc , never will be gone wrong .... :)))
that , is very bad thing to do , if you don`t how to do this , just take it to any mechanic shop they do it for you , for about 20 usd or even less ...
I've done this with desktops but never laptops before. I have to sometime though, I think my laptop is heating BAD. I need to clean the dust out but I'm scared to death.
