Big difference in these swings. Tiger was super tight especially at this point when he was going on his major run. I live Rory swing but he isn't Tiger of 1997 or 2007. Rory snaps his left knee another very big difference

since when has Woods been a natural drawer of the ball? Throughout his career and more so in his prime (2000 - 2005) Woods' go to stock shot was the fade?! Have a word with yourself, you cannot compare between these two either; they are completely different camera angles. Very poor analysis of both swings if you ask me. Go back and do your research. Tiger's swing has his arms far more in front and less "stuck" (funny because he's the guy who always talks about being stuck...). He also had a take away that was more on plane without moving inside then back on plane. Rory does have the club closer to straight down the target line at the top which I do like. All that said, I'll never ever be as good as either of these guys (I'm a 3.5 handicap currently) and Rory is so talented that it doesn't really matter how he swings.

@NovAaron I suggest you reconsider the way you look at golf. Rory of course will never be as good as Tiger. But if he ends up being as good as Phil Mickelson, I’d consider that an awesome career. Whether you love or hate a player, you can’t help but respect a good performance on the golf course. I love how Arnold and Jack embrace the talent of the next generation and root for them as they break all of their records. I'm excited to see the young and old generation continue to battle it out.

@NovAaron Being a fan of the game, I would love to see Tiger break Jack’s record. While I question your reference to Tiger’s “humility,” he is without a doubt the most incredible golfer of our time and still continues to amaze me. With reference to swing mechanics, I was mainly talking about the way Rory and Tiger 2000 set the club beautifully the top of their swings. I’m no golf pro, but I’ve watched a lot of golf and all I can say is that I love the way both of them swing the club.

@NovAaron You're obviously pretty passionate about this. To say that I'm just a McIlroy fan and know nothing about golf mechanics is a stretch. I actually didn't like Rory for years. Really, I'm passionate about the game of golf, and when I see a performance like his at the US Open, I can't help but respect the display of talent. He is, very deservedly, a US Open champion.

Everyone needs to consider Tiger Woods famous snapping of his left leg during impact killed his knee and he later required surgery so what does this mean for Rory? will he have the same issues as he ages because of this left knee snap that gives him more power?

Good video. Just to point out that the camera angle in Rory's video is not directly down the line. By this I mean, it will look as if he is slightly across the line at the top, however it is not. That's one thing that is not taken into account when swing videos if they are taken at incorrect angles. However, still a great video.

Main thing to see is that Tiger, being a taller and longer limbed player, doesn't need to get as deep, and create as much lag as Rory, in order to generate high swing speed. Therefore he's going to have slower club face rotation through impact, since he is releasing the club earlier than Rory. Consequently he's going to be a bit more consistent. Once Butch got Tiger to keep the club a bit more in front of himself, and slow down the lower body a bit, he was unstoppable,

Rorys swing now vs Tigers swing in 97 is better because Tiger in 97 was far too across the line and relied on timing. However Tigers swing in 2000 was the best swing in golf and no one will come close to doing what he did that year. Either way Tigers biggest strength was his head and Rory doesn't seem to have the mental toughness and ability to grind like Tiger did. Comparing Rory to Tiger is insane. Tiger was and still is one of a kind.

@Padatrick932 - We're looking at Tiger from 1997 because the way he won his first Major was so similar to Rory in that total domination. I would disagree that Tiger's 2000 swing was similar to Rory's though because Rory works the club very much around his body on a fairly flat swing plane whereas Tiger in 2000 was keeping the club very much in front of the body on a steeper plane. Check out some of the vids knocking around youtube and see if you agree!

@Padatrick932 No, Rory's swing is NOTHING like Tiger's 2000 swing. You must be a McIlroy fan who knows absolutely nothing about golf mechanics. In fact, Rory's swing is much more like Tiger's 97 swing in many more ways. Rory, firstly, employs a draw almost consistently and cannot hit high cuts and fades on command. His winning at Congressional was an absurdity considering the conditions made the tournament play to the lowest scoring average in the history of the US Open.

@Padatrick932 So, its hard to give credit to Rory for a major win when it didn't play anything close to a major..it played easier than all 3 othermajors, all three wgc events, and 11 regular pga tour events. Sorry, US Open is supposed to be hard and fast with penalizing rough. Congressional had wide soft fairways with rough low enough to allow players to advance it to the green, and the greens were so soft, players were hitting out of the rough and holding the greens with ease

@NovAaron The course plays the same for everyone. If you really want to have a valid gripe...... talk about Tiger winning a tournament for the first time in 2 years at THE weakest field of the year and calling it an official PGA tour win against 16 pros.

Ive seen stronger fields at a Sundays captians choice at my local track.

He would be moronic to use his us open win as evidence that his swing is great. Rory, just like Tiger in 97, can play great when he is on, but when his timing is off he will not be in contention. Tiger knew if he was ever going to break all the records that he needed to be in contention week in and week out.

Rory on the other hand thinks he is too cool for school and everyone telling him what a great swing he has is not doing him any good. Good thing Tiger had Butch around in 1997 to explain to him why he needed to fix his swing. Rory should visit Butch or someone else who will tell him the honest truth

@Padatrick932 The truth is unless he changes his swing, with the parity in the sport these days, he would be lucky to have a career as good as Phil Mickelson at best. If he does make some correct adjustments to his swing (Tiger started his swing change at 21 - Rory is now 22) then he may have a chance for a great career. He will never catch Tiger..In fact, I do not think any person will ever win more than 10 majors again. Tiger is going to have a hard enough time getting to 18-20.

what i meant about the heels thing was that in tigers squat and turn his left leg plants into the ground and he spins his hips to the left which obviously lifts his right heel. in rorys downswing rorys both heels leave the ground as he thrusts towars the ball wheras tiger is thrusting left. pause at impact postion for both swings - much different.

poor analysis. camera angles where different first of all. leg actions are pretty similar but many distinct differences. tiger's right knee stays more flexed on the way back while rory's moves a bit back and deeper. on the way down rory collapses toward the ball while clearing his hips so much so that his heels actually come off the ground(extremely unique) and his hips actually stop clearing and retract in another extremely unique move after impact. tiger squats and clears to the left fully

Good analyses of the hugging motions by both Tiger and Rory. I think Rory's technique is comparatively more effective and will yield more wins for him throughout his career.

Their legmotion is not similiar Tiger does not drive his knees towards the ball like Rory does Tiger clears his left side much better than rory does. Tiger's left knee is pretty high though but that is because his right foot comes off the ground so quickly in the downswing. And to compare swings you need almost identical camera angles and the camera has to be stationary too.

Rory drives his knees towards the ball and his right arm is way behind him with that legmotion driving your knees towards the ball you will get surverly stuck behind your body but this happens to rory sometimes but he makes great moves to counter affect his unique legmotion.

Rory's swing is better currently than what Tiger's was in 97 but a better swing doesnt make a better champion. Rory will prob have 8-10 majors of his own though.
