He was about 53 when this was recorded. UN-REAL. His voice is still awesome. Man, I sure am glad those guys took care of themselves and are rockin. What a GREAT band - so many great songs like this one. Rock on dudes.
Styx Live and In Concert 1976 - 1978 2DVD set filmed at the Winterland in SF available at Tommygun Video please see our youtube channel for link to web site/video clips.
hmmm just watched 3 different live versions of this and the Les Paul he uses at the end for the solo sounds so much better than the other guitars .... lots of body....
@arbshredder - I think that's cuz he has the keyboard split into two - that way he does not use one keyboard for the solo and another for the chords he's playing - the way DDY would - I guess Lawrence likes to use one keyboard....
Although he looked more female than male in earlier video, the wrinkles, experience and facial hair Tommy Shaw has become HOT!
This song from his early career was a defining song in my life regardless of his looks. The wonderful thing about pre-80's music is that it was about the music...not about the looks or the "hotness" factor of the singer,
Perhaps Tommy's voice isn't as perfect here as it was on the original recording (yes, it was PERFECT then ) -- however, the song still achieves the intended result: Magic.
Instead of complaining how things aren't exactly as we want them, or not as we recall them, we should instead be grateful that Styx & other incredible artists still tour, when they could have retired long ago.
Thanks to them for letting us share the music, time & time again -- and thank you stmonkeys for posting this!
????? Not his strong point? have u seen him sing live lately? apparently not. have u heard anything else he sings? He's a major part of the bands awesome vocal harmonies. Maybe he's not spot on in this performance, but this guy is a great singer guitarist, AND songwriter.
i agree this isnt his best performance but its still great and he is singing a reasonably hard song live! most singers dont quite sing as well ive and tommy normally does. i tell u i wudnt mind being able to sing like him lol
geeze - JY's got the worst caterpillar ever. He looks like an idiot. Other than that, the only other better song by Styx is Blue Collar Man - but this is really good too. Tommy Shaw - is awesome.
This tops out for me as the best song of Styx's. However the live version released on Caught in the Act is the best live version. The boys in Styx were always good for a few hits on each of their albums, but I feel that the Paradise Theatre is their single greatest album, start to finish. It's like their Dark Side of the Moon

Well, you didn't read the whole story. It's true that after hearing this song she thought twice about suicide. However, as soon as she heard Mr. Roboto she cut her wrists then jumped out her window to her death.
I had the pleasure of seeing Styx live in concert 3 times in the late 70's. Saw Tommy Shaw (from 2 ft away) sit on a wooden stool and sing, and play, his heart out! He had a beautiful voice when he was young. The later "Styx" doesn't begin to compare with the originals!
Fantastic...But needs to be louder!

There's also about 30 years in between the orginal recording of this song and when this was performed. Cut the man some slack.

His voice is off and kid of shaky. Singing is not that guy's strong point.

dude, the song was originally recorded 30 years ago, are you kidding?
listen to Lights from the Cornerstone album, his voice sounds the best in that song IMO
