His voice was so compelling, whenever I hear it I have to stop and listen. Not many voices have that effect. He was handsome, talented and charming, from all I've heard, yet so shy and insecure he could not believe that anyone really liked him. The pain made him drink and medicate himself to death before he was thirty, but I know that in Heaven he understands how many people's lives he enriched with his gift of music, and he's happy there. listen to the influence of Emmett Miller's 1922 recording, 27 years before this one. The sound of the high low pitching is the same. By the way, he (Emmett) was a minstrel singer. So much of what we identify as county is a mixture of other forms, and the same goes for any other genre.
