My position is that the choice should be made by parents, not the government, and only for very young kids, Once someone is 12 or so years old - which, according to Jean Piaget, means the person has full adult mentality (powers of reasoning) - then that person is fully capable of making his or her own decisions about video games.

Violent people are attracted to video games, its like when pot used to cause skyzophrenia. In fact video games, and movies aside, look back to Beavis and Butthead, the MTV television show. A child lit his home on fire simply because of the fact that he saw it on that television show. I can provide example of this for wrestling video games, first person shooters, MMORPGs, etc...

I introduced the Grand Theft Auto series to him since he was 5 and played it in the PC, PS2 and PSP. My position is that the choice should be made by parents, not the government, and only for very young kids, Once someone is 12 or so years old - which, according to Jean Piaget, means the person has full adult mentality (powers of reasoning) - then that person is fully capable of making his or her own decisions about video games.

But i don't think i'd want my kids playing them and anyway the issue lies with the parents. If you don't know what games your child is playing your not doing your job. And yes i understand Jean Piaget's study and also cognitive and metacognitive development in children. But lets face it kids are nieve and easily persuaded, just look at the hip hop influence on kids now days.

The obvious answer is no.....because no intelligent person would. The bottom line is.... these games are rated 15+ anyway, so just like violent films their not allowed to watch or play them. Violent people are attracted to video games, its like when pot used to cause skyzophrenia. It was an accepted fact for a long while until someone finally put the necessary efforts (which are immense) to prove that in fact people with skyzophrenia are attracted by pot, because it actually help them deal with it.
So I'm ready to bet that within 10 years the scientific world will come up with a study showing the world how video games actually allow people to discharge their violent feelings.

I can also say that I love video games and am quite passionate about them. But I agree that rated M games need to be kept away from kids. On top of everything else covered in this debate, children are being sucked into an online world that is completely uncensored with much older players who are often times even worse than the M rating that the game covers.

Anyone who can affirm that Paul Levinson has any credibility here is sadly mistaken. I have a degree in Electronic Media and Film Studies, and have done several studies on video games, the addictive qualities of video games, and the effects of violence in video games. Jack Thompson knew exactly what he was talking about every step of the way, he clearly did research and came prepared to this debate. Levinson embarassed himself and his university, as well as anyone else in this feild.

In fact video games, and movies aside, look back to Beavis and Butthead, the MTV television show. A child lit his home on fire simply because of the fact that he saw it on that television show. I can provide example of this for wrestling video games, first person shooters, MMORPGs, etc...

I introduced the Grand Theft Auto series to him since he was 5 and played it in the PC, PS2 and PSP. Yes, all he does in the game is senseless violence. 2 years after, my nephew still plays the game (and getting good at it too) but he's still top 1 in his class, plays ball with friends, and moreover, a good kid. Thompson is really insulting human intellegence. I understand that violet video games could have caused some people to be violent but it isn't a large ammount. Most people have enough sense to process the idea, "hey, don't do this in real life even though it's entertaining in this game". Also, if someone is violent it usually has to do with their past, mental illness, selfishness, or sometimes nothing at all.
