That is an excellent review, I enjoyed watching it. One thing I discovered though when watching the movie a second time was the fact that I didn't find Randy or Cassidy as likeable as I did the first time I watched it. The ending, as you say, was terrific but the selfishness of both of them stood out a mile for me. As a wrestling fan for the past 20 years, perhaps that was fitting as we feel some guilt about the business we supported and the tragic end many of our heroes faced.
Gracias Brandon, jamas habría pagado un centavo por ver esta película, pero debido a tu magnifica sinopsis me hiciste recordar que siempre podemos encontrar un tesoro escondido en cualquier parte,
I'm so glad you included this movie in your top 10. Micky Rourke's performance has to be one of the best of all time. Overall, The Wrestler is actually one of my top 5 favorites.
For 30+ years, Roger Ebert has been my favorite movie reviewer. Your delivery, sensitivity and attention to detail carries a similar vibe and spirit. Excellent review, friend.
man the ending of this movie really got to me this whole movie really got to me it was great as a whole i remember leaving the theature just thinking about my life and were its gonna go, and struggling to understand what my dreams mean to me and what i am willing to give up to make them happen
I love The Wrestler because it gets indy wrestling down, period. You go to a local show and thats what you'll see. But as for the Ram, it's hard to feel sympathy for him because I've seen so many asses do the wrong thing. But the good guys always come out on top in the end.
Really great review! You have a great way of reviewing in a way that really shows your love for this movie! Really looking forward to your next review!!
This is one of my favorite movies, and Mickey Rourke is my all time favorite actor. if you liked this movie you should also see "Killshot" with Rourke. Mickey Rourke is also very good in the movies "Spun" and "Sin City". I highly reccomend all three.
As I'm concerned, I found the movie a little too melodramatic and precisily too "raw". It's depressing and realism at his most boring. The movie tries to create some drama with the heart attack issue and then, you got... THAT ending!
(Man I was pissed)
I think this movie is overrated.
In the same kind of movie, I think "The Fighter" is much more interesting/entertaining.
FANTASTIC review!! I loved this movie, and couldn't agree more with your points about how well it was filmed, how Rourke brought the character to life, etc. Excellent!
Excellent review Artie, this is one of my, if not my favorite films and I agree with you on everything. Glad you decided to make these vids! Cheers :]
Hey Artie, if you're interested in what inspired this movie, I really recommend you watch Beyond The Mat. Randy The Ram seems to have been inspired quite heavily by Jake The Snake Roberts with some Terry Funk and Mick Foley thrown in for good measure.
ahhh i love that you included Springsteen's song in this too...personally think its one of Springsteen's most underrated songs...love it..this was great!
You know I've been wanting to see it but being a big fan of wrestling myself I didn't want to be disappointed with the portrayal of Mickey's Character in the movie. But after listening to this great analogy of this movie...I've decided that seeing the movie is a MUST. Thank You Brandon for opening my eyes and helping me get past the doubt I may have had with this movie.
I've officially replaced my daily intake of watching mindless vlogs with Brandon's movie reviews. So much more interesting and makes you think. Now I have to apologize for comparing this to a youtube vog!
You know what? I have to say that I never thought that much about this movie. You put a lot of thought into this. I can't say I ever wanted to watch this movie again, but now what I've seen your review, I might just watch it again with your words in mind.
@LiIGrim That's the magic of professional wrestling. The wrestler HAVE to make you believe this is real, that he is not acting. It's like acting in a movie. People have to believe. It's called "Kayfabe", in the business. If, for exemple, in a storyline, your supposed to have an injured leg, but you are walking correctly, you're doing it wrong, and people won't believe. It's like having a bad actor in a movie.
@LiIGrim Sometimes a storyline can be built outside of the ring. Here's two exemples:
for Wrestlemania 27, The Rock kept bitching on John Cena on Twitter for a match. Here's another exemple: at the very first Wrestlemania in 1985, Hulk Hogan and Mr.T were taking on "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. To built there match, Hogan and Mr.T, went on Saturday Night Live, to provoke their opponents. That's the same thing with these two.
@Videogamestwin I'mnot saying they don't, but sometimes a wrestler can be out of character to make a critical judgement. Which could've been possible.
@LiIGrim At Wrestlemania 25, Mickey Rourke DID show up. After Jericho's match against three other wrestlers (Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka), Jericho called Rourke, who was at ringside watching the match. BUT, Rourke went in the ring, and punched Jericho (unfortunately, he broke his hand punching him, but that's not the only time this happened, Hugh Jackman broke Dolph Ziggler's jaw punching him during a match). It was scripted. It's a spectacle, it's like watching a play
That's such a great movie. I'm a wrestling fan myself, and this movie made me a little teary. HE should have won the Oscar for Best Actor, NOT Sean Penn.
@Theroymustang Buzzkill or not, people need to know what the future holds for the internet if this despicable piece of legislation passes. People need to look into the matter, write their members of congress, sign petitions at whitehouse (dot) org, and exercise their first amendment before it's taken away on the web.
@Theroymustang And it probably will pass, too. Those big film corporations have so many politicians in their pocket, of course they're going to vote in favour of it.
Brandon, (my name is also Brandon) I would like to let you know that you are the one who inspired me to further my interest in film, acting, and writing. I have followed you for several years now, and none of your videos have disappointed me. You proved something to me. that there is still room for raw, natural, highly unrecognized talent, which has kept me going with a smile. Thank you , thank you, thank you.
Another great review, man. The Wrestler is an incredible movie and Mickey Rourke gave probably his best performance since The Pope of Greenwich Village or maybe Diner.
Did you know that Nicolas Cage was originally going to play Randy? Apparently when Aronofsky told Cage he wanted Mickey instead, Cage gladly stepped down, since he has so much respect for Mickey.
I was at the wrestling show where they shot the CZW scene (the scene with the barbed wire and glass match). While it was a cool experience, they shot it at an actual wrestling show which actually hurt the pacing of the wrestling show itself. As a wrestling fan and being friends with a few guys pursuing this profession, I can attest that this movie was a pretty accurate portrayal of what it's actually like. Maybe a bit darker than it really is but still pretty accurate.
Totally agree with your review. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Couldn't believe it got shut out at the Oscars. Only two nominations and didn't win either. Where was the best picture, and best original song nomination???
I have seen these movies, so i love that you are discussing and analyzing them rather than 'reviewing/teasing' them. maybe you could do a little 20 second intro for those who haven't seen each and then give a warning that you are going in to discussion mode.
You must keep doing these. You do an absolutely phenomenal job with these reviews and they feel so real and bigger and beyond just "reviewing" the movie. Amazing job and I hope you continue to make these even when this series is over! Way to go Brandon!
The Wrestler was such a great movie. I agree, the ending definitely caught you off guard but it was a great way to end the movie. ***Maybe A Spoiler**** I feel like it actually made me happy to see it end that way because I think then The Ram was truly where he belonged.
I haven't seen this one but just from the quick scenes you've shown it reminds me a lot of Black Swan, which of course is also from Darren. Just the camerawork and how it shows the faces and the not-so-wide-but-still-pretty-wide shots of their bodies. It does look good.
I also love this movie, and as a longtime fan of professional wrestling, I can tell you that this film gets really close to the mark of what some of the fading stars of the business go through trying to cling onto their beloved livelihood. If you watch the documentary 'Beyond The Mat', you'll see just how bad the business can be for people before and after their pinnacle.
I liked this movie, and for all the reasons you described, but one thing about the movie that I didn't care for (other than the nudity which I personally don't like to see in films) was that among the solidness of the character and the consistency of the back story, the plot seems uninvolved and poorly communicated. It's kind of hard to know when the exposition ends so when things like the character development at the deli happen, it's hard to see the change.
Havent seen this movie yet but I want to. And I agree with you about the hand held camera technique. I like movies like that (If the story is good) because it makes it feel more raw and real.
I am not sure if it is an insult to say so or not... But, you could have a long and illustrious career as a reviewer. You have an insight into the stories that helps bring others in as well.
Reenacting Micky Rourke' scene in The Pledge could be a hell of an exercise.

I like the fact that you manage to give an in depth review of a movie, without spoiling anything.

Great, concise review. No ham-fisted rating scale, just pure thought. Nice work, I'm looking forward to the other 8!

Havent seen this movie yet but I want to. And I agree with you about the hand held camera technique. I like movies like that (If the story is good) because it makes it feel more raw and real.

Rourke was so obviously robbed on the Oscar, he even said beforehand that he wouldn't win because of previous conflict with the Academy.

Well done, Brandon. Again, you surprise!
I am not sure if it is an insult to say so or not... But, you could have a long and illustrious career as a reviewer. You have an insight into the stories that helps bring others in as well.
