rb333, the road that was affected by the earthquake, has more than 180 years of existing, I initiate as a way of mules when the first Costa Rican were travelling to Europe, using the Sarapiqui River and the San Juan River, up to coming to the Caribbean Sea.
Those hills that collapsed probably wouldn't have collapsed if the people had not cut down the forests that used to be there.
The soil seems massively mis-laid without a retaining layer of healthy tree roots. The same thing happens after a major fire - the hillsides collapse in rain or in a combination of rain and other stress like an earthquake.
There was also a misterious ''test'' they did only days before by the Electrical company of CR government (ICE), they obviouslly kept that as a secret...
It envolved big machinery and probably explosives....
The forest would have fell with it regardless of it being cut down and such. You see major landslides everywhere on the sides of mountains where trees grow.
So even though development in Costa Rica is shifty and crappily done, it is not to blame. And government conspiracies are rather silly at this point.
there is land slides every freaking day in costa rica.... reason: rains every day, or in this case, massive earthquake. Your comment is partially true, but nobody cut the trees, they just don't grow on areas that are very inclined.
Thank you guys for your help. I am feeling a bit more relaxed knowing it was not where they were staying.
Take care for all of those who are in the region where the earthquake happened. Where I live we get small shakes but it has been warned many times that we are supposed to get "the big one" Thats been yrs now but I hope it isnt in my time.
I have been in a 6/9 quake before, very scary!
Hugs to all involved and thanks again for helping me out.
this has been a terrible disaster for Costa Rica and our people. I am so sad for all the victim's losses and I truly wish they can restore the strength to continue on and rebuild their lives after all they have gone through, loosing their entire homes and towns and families! :( God bless CR and everyone living here!
i am house sitting for people in Canada and I can not get a hold of them via cell phone or the motel. No one answers at the motel so I don't know what to think and I heard many canadians have been killed.
Just wondering why I can not reach them even thru the motel!
I haven't heard about Canadians death on the earthquake.
about the cell phones, well, a few months ago we had a modification on the cellphone and telephone numbers, add a 2 to the beginning of the houses or hotels numbers, and 8 to the beginning of cell phone numbers.
Guanacaste is a region, maybe a couple of hours by car or bus from San Jose.
the earthquake was at Alajuela, on the north of the country, google earth can show you a good map
what do you need to know about guanacaste? does it have to do anything about the earthquake? because if it does, don't worry guanacaste, a region really far from where the earthquake occurred had no consequences, very few people even felt it and what they felt was NOTHING compared to what ppl in the other regions (closer and at the place where it happened) felt, me including!
Hi everybody for all the ticos out there, The Costa Rican Red Cross comfirms 13 dead bodies, 43 people that are still burried but unreachable. They rescue about 300 from the most affected areas. One thing i didn´t like was when channel 7 try to interview the tourist from the Hotel Waterful Gardens the gringos reaction was to hit the cameras.... retards
si tambien lo vi, la mujer esta aterrada y se tiro sobre ellos suplicando q la sacaran de ahi, en parte se justifica, pero tirarsele ensima a los de las notisias no se vio bien
Hello EveryBody!! Just for u to Know!! today 09/01/09 in the morning there where found more people dead! there are like 6 people dead and like about 60 people disappeared. and they say theres more people that will probably be dead or really injury!! i am here from Costa Rica!! well this earthquake already happen! but it would be graet to pray for the people that stay alive to be rescue and for the people that die! and for this to not get more complicated!! thanks!!
I red today in the newspaper that the road that goes to the Water Fall Gardens Hotel is very much damaged, unuseable. So I wonder what is going on in there, with all th tourists not been abl to leave because there is no road. The zone of Vara Blanca, were the hotel is located, was the most affected area. I also wonder what heppened to the people visiting the Poas Volcano, since this is the high season, and I am sure there were people there.
it was huugee in the zone it was 8.2 and 6.2 in the surroundings...12 death people, 42 missing, 1200 are in the hospital, a lot of homes destroy until now
I live in San Jose, my first year living in Costa Rica as a student. I was in my room when I first felt the shaking, and I thought my house was going to just collapse on me. I live on the top floor of the apartment building, and my family and I got the most shaking. It was terrible and a huge mess to clean up inside the house. No one was hurt though.
Thank You for this video, I am from Costa Rica but I live in the US, I used to live in Vara Blanca and my farm is there, we had a lot of material damage but no one inside the farm was hurt, everyone from Vara Blanca is in the soccer field in my farm waiting for help...
On 2:22 what you see is not a house as the guy says. I was there like 3 weeks ago, that was the souvernir store of the Waterfalls Garden Hotel. There is a green thingy as well, that was a shuttle used to pick the tourist and take them to the reception. There was a trail on the bottom of the screen used by tourist to walk and see the waterfalls... all that is gone as you see... Im sure everyone there is just gone... hopefully they survived, however all that is located on a really risky zone
Oh wow! I read about this on yahoo yesterday. My cousin called me and told me that there are more dead. Also that some tourists have also disappeared.

rb333,with the time the old way was extended and the colons began to cut trees and to construct houses, what agrabo the problem of the deforestation.

Guanacaste is very far from the epicenter, had nothing to do with it.
and yes... there are canadians lost in this tragedy.
Entire families have dissapear and most probable thing is that they will not be retrieved since we are talking about tons of mud.
