Saying that you are a Quaker but not a Christian is folly, as ridiculous as one saying that he is an atheist-Catholic or a Buddhist-terrorist. Jesus Christ and His spirit and message were at the very center of the founding of the Society of Friends. You have turned Meeting for Worship via this video into a self-centered, trendy, feel good mockery. Quakerism transcends all of this, and in its essence and grace, is more "with it" than videos like this will ever be..
Some how I do not believe George Fox would want his journal to replace the Holy Scriptures.
Also a quote from it",but I saw them in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ."pg34, 2nd ch. of my copy. You should read the whole page!!! I question their understanding of his journal and teachings. Quakerism in its purity is a self journey to the Lords gate. G-d lights the way for those who listen and knock. We need nothing but silence for pray and no idols to focus on. Peace to all your hearts.
Jesus was not a lord. He was a man. Savior? Its not a matter to care. I think we loose it in words written and edited by facists for 2000 years plus. IT is the God we are inside one with. The light we become one with. I am not seeing walls. I see freedom within. Our job is to pour it out. The endless possability of Gods love.
Jesus was a man. Gods son. True. We are all Gods children. I do not see a wall anywhere. Truth be told. I am not a Christian I am Quaker. I am a friend.
There is no formal Quaker belief. Unfortunately! Although the journal they held high doesn't exactly follow their beliefs. George Fox did say the "Lord Jesus Christ", "the Christ" in it. Although I will admit I myself am not orthodox. Many of us hold that Jesus is divine. Each meeting house and each member isn't held to any one doctrine. Most christians now days don't read the bible, they take a secular belief over biblical. So this will become typical all over. G-d Bless
I promote the bible and its teachings. My personal understanding is biblical, and do not reject it. If I would have been in their meetings,I would not have became Quaker.
I do not buy in this "new" theology. 1)homosexuality is permitted.2)That their are many paths to G-d.3)That all will be saved ect.... Some of us hold fast to G-d's word. We do not believe you should prosecute others for their sins, but love them and pray for them. G-d wishes for us all.
I remove the vowel in respect to His name as it is to great for me to spell(including a generic name as well). I find its a way to remember to humble myself. Also when referring to Him I capitalize ex.(His, He, Lord, Creator ect...). Note Lord is a title as is Creator. Now referring to other god(s) I do not capitalize even if they are the first word of a sentence, if I do then its a mistake. This is to show obedience to the first commandment.
As far as I know, no one I attend church with knows or noticed that I do this. This is a personal thing.
As hell goes, when first starting out I thought hell was nothingness. I thought it was described so early people that didn't even have zero in the number system could relate to some kind of an understanding of "nothingness". I still have trouble personally with the concept in traditional thought,I do realize what the bible says,I just can't see it.
@onemarktwoyou I think that the Almighty is fundamentally all loving, I dont think that eternal punishment is in that nature, I personally view His/Her name as Yahweh or Elohim
@onemarktwoyou And there are many Quakers who do not subscribe to this "new" theology to which you are referring. I am a Quaker and do not believe in homosexuality, that there are many paths to God, etc.
May I ask which area of the US you are from? As I grew up in central Iowa. The area was heavily Quaker. I had a friend who just looked into Quakerism and stated why the Friends numbers declined and I can't argue with it. He said the doors were held open and the heretics came in and drove out those who were in the 'truth'. Thus' drove people to other 'steeple-houses' to find the 'word'.
Could you give your 'Quaker' opinion on the trinity?
That is a good question my friend. It is simple, those that do not believe Jesus was the Christ(as divine) can not be christian. Nor can a muslims or a jew for the same reason, unless they are guilty of apostasy. There is no doctrine in Quakerism to speak of, there are standards of community(again not in stone). Beliefs should be biblical, then again some decide to reject parts of the bible. I find that all is guilty of this. Most things of Quakerism is for purity.
What does it mean when someone says savior? Savior from what?
I view Jesus more as a teacher whose teachings have a lot of relevance and spiritual meaning.
I also think it is a bit arrogant to say just because someone isn't "saved or Jesus is their savior", then they are incapable to experience the inner light.
I’ve got Christ’s inner light but he’s not my savior"
This really speaks to my condition. While I don't get as uncomfortable with Christocentric terminology, I've found that Christianity has changed quite a bit. Although George Fox was very Christ-centered, there is no emphasis on dogma or creeds in Quakerism. While I used to consider myself Christian, many others wouldn't due solely to my theological beliefs about Jesus.
If Jesus isn't your savior, it's disingenuous to say that you have "Christ's inner light". Also, the title of this video is misleading, as this is an obviously contrived video, and there is nothing organic about it. This "dance party" didn't "erupt" in Quaker worship, it was quite clearly orchestrated.
@SnorkyTheInept Really Snorky? You think this dance party was "clearly orchestrated?' Wow what was your first clue? Was it the fact that a camera was present? Was it the fact that a woman had a trumpet and knew exactly what kind of song Jon was going to sing? Was it the fact that there was a cut-away scene where Jon was playing the piano in another room? Thank God you told me! I never would have guessed. Sorry I couldn't help being sarcastic. :-)
Just FYI. You're not in fellowship with the beliefs of George Fox, but rather that of Elias Hicks.
Quotes from George Fox, from the Journal of George Fox (Nickalls):
"And soId I directed the people to their teacher, Christ Jesus their saviour, when these mountains were laid low, and so did set up Christ in the hearts of his people."
p. 82
"...Christ was the teacher of his people and their saviour."
p. 118
There are many more examples in his journal. Two was all I could fit in the comments.
The four principles of quakeism are Peace, Equality, Integrity, and simplicity... and basically each person has their own ideas about how these princliples apply to them and apply to the world around them. The whole religion is about building a personal relationship with God, and finding out what he wants you to believe. Quakerism has been in my family for many generations since my ancestors were in England, it's a great religion imo.
I'm a Quaker and a Christian, too. Jesus is my homeboy. He could be yours, too. Just read George Fox if you don't think it's true. Yo, don't be quoting George when you're talking doo-doo.
Yeah, I'm a Quaker and a Christian, too. Don't have to diss my savior just to try and look cool. Quakers don't do that: Ask anyone, fool! Cause I'm a Quaker and a Christian, too.
This video is AWESOME! I just watched it like 10 times. I have wanted to go to a Quaker meeting for a long time, but been too shy, too busy or just unsure if I could be a Quaker. But now I am inspired to check it out and attend a local meeting. Thank you!!!
The comments make interesting Reading. Coming from a country with no Quakers (france) I am trying to understand this movement (?). The thing I find the most impressive about them is how ahead of their time they have always been in their fight for justice (antislavery, feminism, Greenpeace, Amnesty,...) which is what Jesus taught us, or certainly me. In a way, Jesus followers or not, Quakers seem to have understood his message better than anyone I have seen. Peace.
@foxthequaker As myzblu said, it's offensive and that is true. The video denies Christ is the savior and it also makes a mockery of a Quaker meeting for worship, which is is a sobor affair.
"This Jesus, who was the foundation of the holy prophets and apostles, is our foundation; and we believe there is no other foundation to be laid but that which is laid, even Christ Jesus who we believe tasted death for every man,
and shed his blood for all men, and is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world: according as John the Baptist testified of him, when he said, "Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world". John i. 29. We believe that he alone is our Redeemer and Saviour, even the captain of our salvation,
who saves us from sin, as well as from hell and the wrath to come, and destroys the devil and his works; who is the seed of the woman that bruises the serpent's head, to wit, Christ Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. That he is (as the scriptures of truth say of him) our wisdom and righteousness, justification and redemption; neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we may be saved. "
"The LORD is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and wrath. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and furiously destroys his enemies!"
This from the Holy Book of Nahum
Now that is a Bible quote that some of the hate mongers that spout "we are so special, we are going to heaven...ha ha...your going to hell" can get into. Jon is a Quaker for sure, that is why he lets you assholes spout crap. I am not a Quaker, just an Infidel who hates bullies. SO all you Christian bullies...go to _ell.
To all the know it all cry baby cultists of the world, you now who you are, get a big box of tissue and cry yourselves to sleep. Your continuous infantile babbling is unacceptable behavior and if you continue I will have to report you to the thought police. I am not Jon Watts, the guy in the video, that guy is a human being and he does not hide his name or pretend to be someone else.
To all people who post comments who think that no one has a right to comment on their comments...get a soother
estampclub, are you 12 years old?? or just on a crusade. If you keep being such a mean cross carrying bully I am going to have to report you to my mommy...ha ha. Why are the super religious such a bunch of babies. Report me then. You are harassing all Quakers who are not into the cult of the savior, so why is it you can speak your mind and I can't. I guess you believe in you fairy tale but not in freedom of speech. Grow up and stop coming to this channel if it bothers you so much.
@TerencioLaverdure1 I never claimed to be super religious, but regardless, I never initiated any conversation with you. I don't even know who you are and what prompted you to even post a comment against me. Obviously you're some type of atheistic ranter who enjoys ridiculing other Christians. You're probably the guy in the video who denies Christ is the Son of God. That's your choice. But as far as sending me messages, I will ask you to refrain as that's unacceptable behavior.
if we are standing outside of our bodies... it is all Gods fault::if we sober up a bit..it is to serve you::For the LooooVe of Christ Posseses us::because we figure that If Jesus died for all then all have died with him::a dead man can safely be said to be free from the claims of sin and death::since he died for all set us all free::we can live for him now since he also rose up from death and is now alive..we are alive with and because of him now::Now we see everyone Spiritually.
I am against religion, but I would be miserable and condemned without my RELATIONSHIP with my SAVIOR, so I'm really sad for anyone who claims to have the light of Jesus Christ and yet doesn't accept Him as their Savior.
You say, "I've got Christ's inner light but he's not my savior"
What a WASTE! Why even bother to learn about Him, write a song, or make a video about Him??? John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life." THE is a definite article = ONLY ONE!!!
@xikafbdwadsX wait..... George Fox has been to your school???? when? he's dead though! he was the one who started quakerism! *is confused* you don't mean Tom Fox do you?
@esstampclub no, not always true, you don't have to be fully religious to be one. the quaker morals and values are simple living, and the silence guiding you by- whatever force you believe. We believe that the light OR god guides us all but you can always choose. Quakerism is NOT a forced religion. Like, i believe that the "light" within us all is our universal humanity, and the ability to love not god. and, my best friend (would be considered as an atheist) is Quaker but doesn't believe in god.
@esstampclub There are very few universally accepted truths in the Quaker community. Tolerance and acceptance are two of them. A particular beleif in Christ is not.
@esstampclub Blah Blah Blah Blah. Get the spirit and stop pushing the Cult of Christ as a embodied spirit and realize that we as humans free of the poisonous concept of original sin refuse to accept such heartless and hind brain driven words. Jon Watts rides the wave of the Holy Spirit with LOVE and you spout of cultic mindless poison and call him a Ranter. I am NOT a Quaker but have a long history of spiritual practice and you small minded one are a RANTER. Your heart is encased in darkness.
@TerencioLaverdure1 What in the world are you talking about? I wasn't talking to you and never posted a comment for you to reply to. So I'm going to disregard everything you wrote as rubbish. Any further attacks on me will be marked as spam and reported to YouTube as harassment.
I think I love you after watching this video xD. I have been thinking so much about how I am supposed to identify as Quaker if I don't identify as Christian and you explained my thoughts so well thru this badass song.
Pathoftruth1, I beg to differ with some of your statements. I think a person can have Christ in their life without having to acknowledge him as "savior". People like Watts follow the teachings of Jesus so that makes him a "Christian" in my book. I disagree that denying Christ as your savior means totally denying him.
No Quakers are not a cult. They're a 300+ year old denomination that was started by George Fox. Most Quakers would consider themselves Christian but some, like the ones in this video, tend to see themselves as followers of the Inner Light. Google the word "Quaker" to find out more if you are interested.
you could call them a sect i suppose, but really it's sort of a christian denomination that split from the mainstream beliefs. it's nothing 'Davidian'
@earthalien77 True Quakers are Christian and are not a cult. Just as an FYI, the people in this video are not Quakers and clearly have no clue what Quakerism is. This is just ridiculous nonsense not worth watching.
@pathoftruth1 How can you judge these people to be not Quakers? Are you not aware how diverse the Quaker faith is? I think it is you who don't really understand Quakerism.
@earthalien77 True Quakers are Christian and are not a cult. Just as an FYI, the people in this video are not Quakers and clearly have no clue what Quakerism is. This is just ridiculous nonsense not worth watching.
I likewise have a great respect for Jesus without feeling that he was the son of god in any sense differently than I am the son of god. My conception of god does not make it possible for me to call myself a "Christian" but I do consider myself a Disciple of Jesus for he said t"hat you love another," all men (and women of course) shall know you are my disciple.
The commandment of Jesus is love. And that is a denial of sin. Or see it seems to me.
I loved this video. I have been to Pendle Hill & it is a wonderful place! I love being a Quaker because it lets me get in touch with God without the need for clergy or elaborate rituals. All you need to do is be still & let God speak to your heart.
I RECOGNIZE MY FRIEND ANDREW! I can't remember your last name, dude, because you're not on facebook. I do remember when you broke your nose playing Ultimate at Earlham and you wore a scary face mask for a while :-)
Greetings Friends, from San Diego -- Love this video! And as the father of two young Friends, I rejoice in the vitality of the message AND the medium.
Out here in Pacific Yearly Meeting we are all considering our relationship to Christianity; some feel drawn to that label, some are repelled by it, and some are comfortable in the space in between... but I hope all can take heart in the quest for discernment.
Standing up to speak the truth - that's what being a Friend is all about [to me]. Christ, and his teachings are a wonderful blessing - but am I a "Christian?" I think Gandhi is a wonderful teacher, and I a "Gandhian"? Perhaps a Buddhist because I groove on some Zen? Enough with the labels!
"My desire after the Lord grew stronger, and zeal in the pure knowledge of God, and of Christ alone, without the help of any man, book or writing. For though I read the Scriptures that spoke of Christ and of God, yet I knew Him not. Then the Lord gently led me along, and let me see His love. There is one, even Christ Jesus, that can speak to thy condition." Fox proclaimed a decidedly Christian belief. I love the video and the diversity!
I've played this several times weeks apart and I still have the same reaction. I love it! It's an interesting distinction about having Jesus in your light (and life), but not seeing him as your savior. I consider myself a Christian, but this Friend speaks my mind.
@fuzzydavid How can you have Christ in your life but not see him as your savior? One cancels the other out. Yours are just empty words that pay Him mere lip service. To deny that Christ as the savior is to deny Christ- period.
Speaking as a Quaker who does identify as a Christian, I think this is wonderful. Hear the message that this young man is offering us, which is to celebrate our relationship with God and with each other, and not spend our time condemning each other's theological differences. "Now this is my commandment: to love each other as I have loved you." Get it, fellow Christians?

There's nothing dignified about this and nothing that even resembles anything remotely similar to Quakerism or Quaker worship. It just makes a mockery of the Quaker faith which is of a very sober variety.
Who are you to judge my friend, for thou shalt not...or am I wrong? Even your tube name is very revealing about your tendency to judge. Have you not had a direct experience with the Holy Spirit?
Where in any of my comments did I pass judgment against the individuals featured in this video? Nowhere did I do such a thing. What I am saying is that this was not a Quaker meeting and there was nothing remotely related to Quakerism featured in it. Finally, I fail to see where anywhere in my screenname to I indicate a tendency to judge. It appears you're the one who's judging, especially when you say you "feel sad" for me.
pathoftruth1 you claim there is nothing dignified and it is not Quakerism, and its a mockery. Those wonderful people in this video consider themselves Quaker. They are Liberal Quakers not Conservative Quakers, but they are still Quakers. I personally believe you are wrong in your projection, but you are entitled to your opinion. Quakers of the Conservative (17th century variety) are in the majority, so I guess in your mind they are the only "real" Quakers, sounds kind of cult like.
If someone started to bow down to Mecca and pray to Allah in a Catholic church and still claimed to be Catholic, any rational person would say that individual is not a Catholic, but a Muslim. The same principle applies to this video. These people are practicing some sort of tribal religion, not Quakerism. If they want to party and dance, then so be it. That's their choice. My only issue here is that there is nothing remotely related to Quakerism in this video and it's false advertising.
Some sort of tribal religion??? Muslims/ Catholics!! Advertising?? Let me guess the concept of Evolution is something you don't grasp at all. Mental myopia is what comes to my mind when I think of your line of thought. Friend, you don't speak my mind. I see it as more like Conservative Jew/Reform Jew, both are Jewish just having different approaches.
@TerencioLaverdure1 You're right about evolution- it is a "concept" and it's not worth grasping because it's not true. Evolution is a denial of God and his creation. If life is the product of evolution then there's no point to anything, and if you believe in evolution, why waste your time talking about anything, when there's no point? After all, if God's not in the picture, there's no hope and without hope, there's nothing left.
@pathoftruth1 I believe in God and I also believe in evolution. I believe that God used evolution to create everything. I refuse to park my brain at the church door and pretend to believe that the earth was created in 6 literal days 6 to 10 thousand yrs ago. That goes against all logic.
Remember pathoftruth," Christian", "Catholic", "Muslim", "Quaker" are all just words that mean different things to different people. William Penn:The humble, meek, merciful, just, pious, and devout souls are everywhere of one religion, and when death takes off the mask, they will know one another though the diverse liveries they wear here make them strangers.
@usacatracha@usacatracha You make an interesting points about names/labels. But Muslims clearly know what it means to be Muslim- they know there are certain beliefs that they are expected to follow. They know that if they do not accept Muhammad as the last of the prophets, then they are not Muslims. Catholics are also very clear on what the church teaches. Quakerism also has certain beliefs that are part of the faith. It was called "primitive Christianity revived."
@pathoftruth1 actually. everything in here is Quakerism in a nut shell. you obviously do not know how open Quakers are to believing in diffrent things. And its not a tribal religion. the danceing is because the Friend (Jon) speaks their mind, and they respond. because its a song, they respond by dance. this wouldn't ever normally happen in meeting for worship, but this is a music video. duhhh...! the begging when it is silent is when it really shows what we do. this is not false.

"I'm a Quaker, not a Christian?"
Sad to not have Christ for a Savior. Guess you would be better off calling yourselves Atheists instead of Quakers. Read your Bible if you have one. Or read about George and what he experienced to start what came to become known as Quaker. If there is not one who speaks to you, who do you hear? Yourselves?
I have been an active Quaker for some 26 years, and am sorry that you have chosen to turn from the Christ to your own understanding.
@colorbars01 yes but as Quakers we dont ever force our religion. i dare you : take a seat on the benches in your meeting house. pray tell me, who gets up and tells you exactly who christ is? who tells you to deny light, an follow only that of god instead? what person is there to preach for you, a lecture to what you SHOULD believe in? no one that i know goes to a Meeting house, an can walk out saying they know EXACTLY what it means to be a Quaker. some food for thought. Open your mind to others.
maybe someone should youtube share this video with hall v. worthington. it might lighten him up a bit or he may get into some prophetic rage while watching it and throw his lap top out of the window. i really appreciated the energy and the participation of everyone in the pendle hill barn. the choreography was Friendly Simple. jon has grown and is growing and it seems very honest to me. Fox, however, never separated Christ and Jesus. this is the source for "that of God" in everyone.
This was great; my parents met at Pendle Hill. I went to many years of Quaker schools and summer camp. The reason Jesus is not my savior is that Quakers (or the ones that i grew up with) do not believe in original sin (therefore there is no need to be saved) and they do believe in the light of God in everyone therefore, everyone is holy/ sacred and capable of living and giving ministry the way Jesus did.
That is a complete and utter distortion of Quaker beliefs and teaching. Please read the writings of George Fox, Robert Barclay or William Penn and you will clearly see that they believed that Christ was the Savior and died for our sins.
Very Nice.Keep upthe good work! I love this famous quote from John Woolman: There is a principle which is pure, placed in the human mind, which in different places and ages hath different names: it is, however, pure and proceeds from God. It is deep and inward, confined to no form of religion nor excluded from any, where the heart stands in perfect sincerity. John Woolman
Amen, Friends! I'm a retired Presbyterian pastor who loves the silence every week in Quaker meeting. Heard about this video there this morning. What a hoot! Love your gentle sense of humor, poking fun at yourselves. The world needs more of that!
Thank you Jon! Wonderful and inspiring work as always. As someone raised in a traditional Christian church, going to Guilford and finding Quakers was like a breath of fresh air. I think this song speaks to my experience of struggling with the labels I have put on myself or have had put upon me. I'm grateful to have Jon as a friend and a Friend to articulate this experience with so much beauty and joy. - Connie
I would like to lift up the recent Pendle Hill pamphlet "Christianity and the Inner Life" by Margery Post Abbott. One quote: "If we do not understand how profoundly the early Quaker understanding of Christianity differs from those forms of Christianity that we may have had negative encounters with in our own lives, then we have lost for ourselves a great resource for the inner life." (p. 4) I would encourage anyone interested in Quakerism to take a look at the entire pamphlet.
I also found it wonderful just to see some familiar faces of Friends I love and admire. The "content" part that remains incomprehensible to me is this: If one faithfully seeks to be guided by the Light of Christ Within, in what meaningful sense is one not a "Christian"?
This view may be an accurate representation of liberal Friends but it's completely untrue of Conservative Friends and the majority of Friends in the programmed tradition. The overwhelming majority of Friends the world over, whether Conservative, programmed, or Evangelical are decidedly Christian and acknowledge Christ as their Lord and Savior.
That view may be an accurate representation of conservative Friends but it's completely untrue of Liberal Friends and the majority of Friends in the unprogrammed tradition. boop bop see what I did there.
Anyway that video was pretty much exactly how meeting goes for me.
I do see what you did there. But that doesn't change more than 300 years of Christian belief on the part of the vast majority of Friends. The liberal view of Quakerism is that it can be anything anyone wants it to be. My point is that such a view is only made possible by the discarding of that 300 plus year history, or at the very least a reinterpreation of it that leaves little of the original faith intact.
I personally was offended by this video, but mainly saddened. Shows a complete lack of understanding of the faith of early Friends. To reject Jesus, the "One Who can speak to thy condition" leaves you friendless, for He called us Friends. And if He is who He claimed to be, then true Quakers still quake before Him alone.
many Quakers do consider him to be Messiah, Savior, Lord. Many Quakers who might not use those words are still listening to His divine presene in meeting.
I totally agree with johanpdx and chadodi on this video. It is a disgrace to me, a Guilford College graduate of 2005, with long standing Quaker roots in both the community and college itself. Quakerism is often called a cult, and Jon makes it blasphemous with his lyrics and antics. My alma mater, my friend Max Carter, and my ancestors have all been horribly disgraced by Jon and his folllowers. I can only hope the world does not believe we are all as "liberal" as Jon.
The great thing about quakers is that we are all have diverse personal opinions about religion. One of the most important aspects of being a quaker is being tolerant of this. Jon was only trying to express his views in a fun way with this video. If you don't believe joking around can coincide with religion, thats understandable, but don't go and call it a disgrace. No need to be offended by jon and his "followers" as you put it
Saying that you are a Quaker but not a Christian is folly, as ridiculous as one saying that he is an atheist-Catholic or a Buddhist-terrorist.

Also a quote from it",but I saw them in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ."pg34, 2nd ch. of my copy. You should read the whole page!!! I question their understanding of his journal and teachings. May I ask which area of the US you are from? As I grew up in central Iowa. The area was heavily Quaker. How can you be a Quaker and not a Christian?
canadacookie 3 months ago 2
@canadacookie
Most things of Quakerism is for purity.
onemarktwoyou 1 month ago
@canadacookie You really can't....there are those people, however, who claim to be Quakers and aren't Christian, but they're neither.

What does it mean when someone says savior? Savior from what?
I view Jesus more as a teacher whose teachings have a lot of relevance and spiritual meaning.
I also think it is a bit arrogant to say just because someone isn't "saved or Jesus is their savior", then they are incapable to experience the inner light.
ehrhornp 4 months ago
"I’m not a Christian but I’m a Quaker
I’ve got Christ’s inner light but he’s not my savior"
This really speaks to my condition. While I don't get as uncomfortable with Christocentric terminology, I've found that Christianity has changed quite a bit. Although George Fox was very Christ-centered, there is no emphasis on dogma or creeds in Quakerism. While I used to consider myself Christian, many others wouldn't due solely to my theological beliefs about Jesus.
j19east 4 months ago
If Jesus isn't your savior, it's disingenuous to say that you have "Christ's inner light". Also, the title of this video is misleading, as this is an obviously contrived video, and there is nothing organic about it. This "dance party" didn't "erupt" in Quaker worship, it was quite clearly orchestrated.
SnorkyTheInept 5 months ago 2

Peace.

No Quakers are not a cult. They're a 300+ year old denomination that was started by George Fox. Most Quakers would consider themselves Christian but some, like the ones in this video, tend to see themselves as followers of the Inner Light. Google the word "Quaker" to find out more if you are interested.

From George Fox's Journal (1646):
"My desire after the Lord grew stronger, and zeal in the pure knowledge of God, and of Christ alone, without the help of any man, book or writing. For though I read the Scriptures that spoke of Christ and of God, yet I knew Him not. Then the Lord gently led me along, and let me see His love. There is one, even Christ Jesus, that can speak to thy condition." Fox proclaimed a decidedly Christian belief. I love the video and the diversity!

TerencioLaverdure1 2 years ago
Where in any of my comments did I pass judgment against the individuals featured in this video? Nowhere did I do such a thing. What I am saying is that this was not a Quaker meeting and there was nothing remotely related to Quakerism featured in it. Finally, I fail to see where anywhere in my screenname to I indicate a tendency to judge. It appears you're the one who's judging, especially when you say you "feel sad" for me.
pathoftruth1 2 years ago 2
pathoftruth1 you claim there is nothing dignified and it is not Quakerism, and its a mockery.
TerencioLaverdure1 2 years ago
If someone started to bow down to Mecca and pray to Allah in a Catholic church and still claimed to be Catholic, any rational person would say that individual is not a Catholic, but a Muslim. The same principle applies to this video. These people are practicing some sort of tribal religion, not Quakerism. If they want to party and dance, then so be it. That's their choice. My only issue here is that there is nothing remotely related to Quakerism in this video and it's false advertising.
pathoftruth1 2 years ago
Some sort of tribal religion??? Muslims/ Catholics!! Advertising?? Let me guess the concept of Evolution is something you don't grasp at all. Mental myopia is what comes to my mind when I think of your line of thought. Friend, you don't speak my mind. I see it as more like Conservative Jew/Reform Jew, both are Jewish just having different approaches.
TerencioLaverdure1 2 years ago
@TerencioLaverdure1 You're right about evolution- it is a "concept" and it's not worth grasping because it's not true. Evolution is a denial of God and his creation. If life is the product of evolution then there's no point to anything, and if you believe in evolution, why waste your time talking about anything, when there's no point? After all, if God's not in the picture, there's no hope and without hope, there's nothing left.
pathoftruth1 1 year ago 2
@pathoftruth1 I believe in God and I also believe in evolution. I believe that God used evolution to create everything. I refuse to park my brain at the church door and pretend to believe that the earth was created in 6 literal days 6 to 10 thousand yrs ago. That goes against all logic.
Octoberfurst 1 year ago
Remember pathoftruth," Christian", "Catholic", "Muslim", "Quaker" are all just words that mean different things to different people. William Penn:The humble, meek, merciful, just, pious, and devout souls are everywhere of one religion, and when death takes off the mask, they will know one another though the diverse liveries they wear here make them strangers.
usacatracha 2 years ago 20
@usacatracha @usacatracha You make an interesting points about names/labels. It was called "primitive Christianity revived."
pathoftruth1 1 year ago 4
@pathoftruth1 actually. everything in here is Quakerism in a nut shell. you obviously do not know how open Quakers are to believing in diffrent things. And its not a tribal religion. the danceing is because the Friend (Jon) speaks their mind, and they respond. because its a song, they respond by dance. this wouldn't ever normally happen in meeting for worship, but this is a music video. duhhh...! the begging when it is silent is when it really shows what we do. this is not false.

Fox, however, never separated Christ and Jesus. this is the source for "that of God" in everyone.
sighbone 2 years ago
This was great; my parents met at Pendle Hill. I went to many years of Quaker schools and summer camp. The reason Jesus is not my savior is that Quakers (or the ones that i grew up with) do not believe in original sin (therefore there is no need to be saved) and they do believe in the light of God in everyone therefore, everyone is holy/ sacred and capable of living and giving ministry the way Jesus did.
gelatiamore 2 years ago 4
That is a complete and utter distortion of Quaker beliefs and teaching. Please read the writings of George Fox, Robert Barclay or William Penn and you will clearly see that they believed that Christ was the Savior and died for our sins.

The "content" part that remains incomprehensible to me is this: If one faithfully seeks to be guided by the Light of Christ Within, in what meaningful sense is one not a "Christian"?

bear- Quakers agree with Jesus' teachings, but do not consider him to be the messiah. Its like judaism kind of

Thee speaks my mind on this matter.

many Quakers do consider him to be Messiah, Savior, Lord. Many Quakers who might not use those words are still listening to His divine presene in meeting.

This is so lovely & groovy.
Plus high quality video & sound.
I'm a former PH resident. Very happy to see the Barn.
I guess the spirit of PH community is still very much alive.
Thank you for sharing!

I can only hope the world does not believe we are all as "liberal" as Jon.

allana,
The great thing about quakers is that we are all have diverse personal opinions about religion. One of the most important aspects of being a quaker is being tolerant of this. Jon was only trying to express his views in a fun way with this video. If you don't believe joking around can coincide with religion, thats understandable, but don't go and call it a disgrace. No need to be offended by jon and his "followers" as you put it
