All these family sitcoms from the 80s have one thing in common, a staircase at the front of the house and a staircase in the kitchen. The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, Mr. Belvedere. Webster had a friggin Grandfather clock that was a secret doorway to a staircase to his room and Webster also had a dumbwaiter in his kitchen. I think Silver Spoons also had the double staircase thing going.
This episode was one of two episodes that TV Land aired as part of their tribute of 50 Years of Warner Bros. TV shows in 2005. The other was S2's "Bad Timing."
I honestly felt the show was better with Sandy...imo! I dont know why though. I mean,I loved Val too. I loved the realtionship with between Val and David. But I kinda felt the show was more "stable" once Sandy came. Sorry if I offended anyone
99 percent of the time I agree with you about the Valerie Harper dismissal weakening the show, the storylines being less realistic and witty, and etc. I haven't entirely seen their mentioning of her being set up as a joke as you have... but I have always regarded the use of the name of the Lorimar/NBC attorney, Don Engel as Mike's roommate's name a pure slap in the face. The writers probably knew she'd be watching this night, as it's been mentioned all over that she still followed the show
and her movie "People Across The Lake" debuted directly after this episode on the same network. This is the one pure "slap in the face" move that I've seen.
I'll find the eps at some point that mention her as a set up for a joke. There's two that I remember very distinctly, and one I'll try to get to today. It's when Michael goes on his first date & he's all concerned how the boys will handle it. They then act all disinterested, going to their friend's house. Cue laugh track...
Pretty sick, especially today of all days (Mother's Day). My mom's been gone for over 4 years and I'd never be so cavalier about her being gone. It's the opposite extreme.
You and I are definitely of like minds. After hearing about Sandy Duncan talking about the season premiere episode, hearing about attorney Don Engel (who was Mike's college roommate in this script), I had a terrible urge to post this episode tonight. However, you have the priceless uncut version. Thank you for all of your posts; your content is an absolute treasure.
Actually, my reasons for posting this episode had more to do with the fact that it's on the same tape as the HOUR MAGAZINE clips... lol. It also ranks up there as one of my favorites, even though I know it's totally silly and absurd. I have 4 more HOGAN FAMILY eps from that same tape to post. I hope to get to some of them by today. Again, feel free to borrow if need be.
Naahhh. Honestly, I don't mind. Feel free. You may be reaching more fans than I would. If you don't want to, then that's fine as well. It's up to you. Oh, and I'm almost done uploading the show where Michael starts dating. In the first part, you'll see the stab the show takes at Valerie.

I would love to post the fire episode because of the couple dozen requests I've gotten for it, but I'd feel as though I were taking your thunder.

I have most of these episodes memorized - I knew what scene you were referring to instantly. And I agree, it is tacky.
