No they were not. They were built during the Zagwe dynasty in the 12th century.

@baawuffwuff It is a more of a begging than a prayer. They are actually asking for food or money from him (the singer). Then they are thanking and prasing him. They are member of a tribe called lalibela in Ethiopia. And for reasons I don't really know, most members of that tribe beg. Usually very early in the morning. I dont know where you can find more of it. Probably in a documentary. Actually in the song the singer is prasing the begger back and saying how beautiful the voice was.
