  • This would be a nice ironic track for a grisly movie scene.

  • aww man i wish the sound was just a tiny bit better you did such a good job!

  • WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE THE BACKING TRACK USED FOR THIS, AND IF SO, WOULD YOU CONSIDER PASSING IT ALONG OR SOMETHING?

  • this is razor blade precision, really nice to watch (besides great listening)

  • Man, this guy's got Austin, Texas & Nashville in his blood...

    Very tasteful !

  • @joris229 Thanks! I´m just using some reverb and very little overdrive.

  • :O your german !!!!!!!!!!!!! and nice playing you rock keep playin ;D

  • @Froobspwnz

Yes, but from the american sector :)

  • @holgerbogen thats pretty darned cool man so when is you and your band coming to arkansas XD? lol just kidding :P

  • @Froobspwnz I sure would like to some day...

  • Great, clean licks there !!.......fine picking !! Love your posts.....More, MORE !!

We Greatly Appreciate your posts and fine playing ! Excellent !!

  • Great stuff.

  • Excellent piece, you play the way I do (in my dreams). Please tell us a little about your guitar

  • @rygertheodd

Thanks. My guitar is a Japanese custom telecaster from 1993. Nothing special but I´m very pleased with it.

  • Thanks, glad you like it!

  • Wow!Wonderful

  • thats exactly the style of music i wanna get into... kinda of a swingy/chicken picken... i miss my guitar, being on the road so much, im gonna get a road guitar, maybe a tele or somethin, and a little amp.. man i wish i had my baby with me... i totally subsribed... keep it up brother... im goin through your video's like MAD!@!

  • Holger, Love that sound! What effects are you using to get that smooth steel sound? Maybe a compressor? What else?

  • I´m just using some reverb and turning the gain of the amp up quite far (but still almost clean). The compressed sound is the camera compression i think.

  • Great stuff, I'm trying to learn the chicken picken style of playing, you're an inspiration for me to try harder! Is that a telecaster?

  • Thanks! Yes, it´s a custom Telecaster.

  • MAGIC!

  • Great playing Holger, I'm a beginner guitarist and these County-blues licks you're playing there are just a great way to enhance my playing. If you could record some jazz and post video and tabs on your website it would be great. Keep on rockin' ;)

  • Thanks megabluzer ! I love Jazz, but I´m not really a jazz player. It might be interesting though...

  • Smokin'!!!

  • Hi...

    Danke für die Info!

Mitten in der Arbeit:) Klasse Seite

Da findet man ja echt viel Übungsstoff...

    Grüße

  • Hi Holger....

    Super Geile licks!

Wie wäre es mit einer Leson dazu?

    Viel Arbeit ich weiß....

    Hast Du eventuell tabs dazu?

    Grüße

  • Danke!

  • I just discovered this video of yours and I think it is just fantastic. You have sent me back to my room to work on my phrasing and licks. Thanks for the push to get back to work. ha.

  • Thanks, I´m glad it inspires you.

  • Truly enjoyable! I like your style.

  • damn hot man , smokin

been playin for decades and cant touch that

  • how do i play like this.

  • GREAT !!! I play Rockabilly, but would like to introduce more (western) swing stuff in my playing. WHAT'S BOTHERING ME IS THE THEORY THAT SEEMS TO BE INVOLVED (could you tell me what's the best way to tackle this problem?).

I've just started out with Paul Pigat's DVD 'Jazzin Up Your Guitar'.

  • Thanks! Ray Benson from "Asleep at the wheel" made a terrific video on western swing. Check that maybe out.

  • Your playing is an inspiration to spend more time practicing!

  • You do a great job. Ive been watching your videos and Im impressed. I've been playing for over 50 yrs. and met aand played with a lot of guitarist, and your very good. Keep it up.

  • Holger,

This is a great tune. I have been working on it for a couple of weeks. I'm stuck on a couple of parts and I'm going blind trying to catch your finger placing on a couple of licks. Do you have some tab for it. Shure would appreciate it. What kind of amp and settings are you using?

    bjohnson

  • Hi bjohnson, thanks for the compliment. I have a tab on my website (video clip2), but the improvised part isn´t exactly the same. Check it out.

  • Wut kind of Telecaster is this?

  • It´s a custom tele (Japan), about 15 years old.

  • Damn, what an awesome tune!

  • Thanks, glad you like it!

  • Can you teach me how to play that one, please?? Awesome! I wanna play it for my family... HAHAHAHA

  • Picked up the tab. Thanks a million!

  • I love this arrangement. Your playing is a breath of fresh air for the old style which I love. Are you going to post the tab for this on your web site. I would love to TRY to play it.

  • Thanks! I put it on my website (video clip 2). Though the solo part is different than on the video.

  • I wanna tell ya! That is some really great playing. Lots of work on that one for sure.

  • Thanks!

  • cool

great pick-n and some hot licks

would' nt mind have-n some of them licks would like to hear u play a boogie on them strings

    great pick-n bro

  • Always very good, now I try to learn your solo..... it is difficult. I arrange the brass for the tune and I hope to play this tune with my stage band, I give you some news about that. I don't forgot you. Renald.....

  • Hi Renald, I´m looking foreward to it!

  • Watched every one of your vids.

You are a class act, great sounds , great style.

    simpley excellent

  • Thanks very much!

  • nice groove going with feeling!!!! refreshing sounds man!!!!

  • Wow, fantastic western swing playing! I play (among other styles) a variation of gypsy swing...but I love the steel guitar-like voicings you're using.

Holger, if you read this, let me know if you're in standard e-a-d-g-b-e tuning. It's hard to see your fingerings clearly, and I can't seem to get those open 6 and 9 chords to sound quite like you do.

Again, fantastic playing and you swing like crazy!

  • Eldon Shamblin meets Jimmy Bryant. Great playing and great song!

  • That was sweet! You are a great guitar player.

  • Excellent guitar picking!

lb - Lebanon, Virginia - USA

  • Thanks!

  • Wow...I'm glad I clicked on this one!! Awesome!! I've been interested in this guitar style since I first heard Asleep ATW....any reccomendations on how to learn this?

  • If you learn a lot of country and western swing, you can play this stuff too. Glad you like it, thanks.

  • killer, I like it

  • Great Jamming-you rocks

  • I began to write the arrangement for brass, I like this tune. Renald *****

  • Hi Renald, I must hear it when it´s finished! Thanks Holger

  • bravo...I'm in awe...and I think I just put my guitar down for good

  • A very good prestation and good sound and good improvisation

  • Dude. Sweet.

  • sure, I´d be glad to meet you! I´d like to visit Amsterdam too. I heard you have a lot of live music going on there. Maybe some day....

  • Hi Holger

Is that a Japanese made tele or american?

Thanks for terific playing. Very inspiring indeed.

    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

    it´s a Japanese Tele.

  • You've got a cool tune there. Reminds me a little bit of Jimmy Bryant.

  • Fantastic skills! All your videos are lessons! Where did you get the backing tracks? If you have any tabs, I'd love to have em'! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Thanks, glad you like my playing. I have a TAB of ´Working man blues´ on my website: cleverguitar com

  • The backing tracks I made with a software called ´Band in a box´.

  • what a cool playing buddy!!!!!! thanks

  • Fantastic phrasing and chord choices!

  • Hot to trot mate! Well done!

  • What kind of guitar did you do most of your training on?

  • I mostly practice on a Telecaster and a nylon stringed acoustic.

  • what?

  • One word: finesse!

  • GREAT YOUR FRIEND IN ALABAMA

    little al

  • It's just simply amazing. Very very good taste, sound. Your fingers are playing just liek when Fred Astaire was dancing. His feet are didn't even touched the floor. It was so fluent. This is how you play. I love it

  • Thank you very much, a great compliment!

  • I really dig your style of playing and I'm off to watch the rest of your videos.

  • I love that tele with humbuckers... What model is that tele and are thsoe stock pickups in there?

  • Hi there! This is a "custom" Tele with a normal single coil at the bridge and a humbucker at the neck. It´s about 15 years old and made in Japan.

  • Danke Stephan, Spielst du auch?

  • Irgendwo zwischen Woolworth und Italien.

  • Good job ! I would bet you like Asleep At The Wheel ? Probably Bob Wills, too.

  • Yes, they are the kings of western swing. I listen to them a lot.

  • sounds good what kind off pick up/amp/effects

    you use

  • I played directly into my computerspeakers over a POD LINE6. Nothing special. Thanks.

  • A POD into computer speakers! I love reading this. A great player can make anything work for them. It truely is all " in the hands ". Very inspiring, please keep posting.

  • Fabulous! Great tone. Great playin'.

  • Wow! Very nice. Get on to TDPRI if you aren't on there already.

  • Thanks, I´ll have a look! Holger

  • Players of your caliber pervade.

  • By that I take it you mean, there are plenty of players around of this calibre? As a fellow picker, I think this guy is the real deal and in my opinion deserves a lot of respect...I don't get that comment!

  • I simply meant that there are a quite a few really good players on the site including Jim Campilongo, Forrest Lee Jr., Redd Volkaert, Brent Mason, and on.

Go pick a fight with someone else.

  • You kids quit arguing or I'll make you kiss each other

  • haha. before listening to this vid i had no idea how 'western swing' sounded. AFTE listening to this, that is the ONLY way that i could describe this. sounds exactly like that. great playing.

  • very smooth and tasteful.

  • Excelent video, excellent sound, very smooth and professional playing!!! I love it!!!

  • Goddamn! Tell me when your tour hits Hollywood!

  • I don't know a mixolydian from a B minor Dorian, but I do know cool when I hear it. Very nice job.

  • I've always been a chicken picker but have lately wanted to expand into the jazzy western swing type thing I guess you'd call it. I LOVE the stuff you do when you switch to the necki pickup! That's what I wanna learn to do. What kind of scale are you using if you don't mind me asking? Anyway keep it up, this is all great stuff!

  • Hi Brad! I was mainly using a dominant scale (mixolydian) on each chord with some passing notes (for example in E: B-C-C#, "sixth-chord"),and a pentatonic blues scale (E,G,A,Bb,B,D,E). I kind of mix them together, but there´s no certain rule for that. I can recommend the "Homespun" videos by Ray Benson (Asleep at the wheel) and Mike Dowling - Swing Guitar. I learned a lot from them. Hope I could help you.

  • holger, amazing stuff, you have a really cool style man this tune is great, i loved those diminished 5th intervals around 00:58 they fit in great man, what do you use to make the backing track?? btw 5 million stars

  • Thank you David! That diminished 5th thing is is simply an E7-arpeggio where I skip one note and then go back up again...and so on. It´s a neat trick, but you can only use it once per gig:) I do my playbacks with "Band in a box". You enter your chords (breaks and so on), choose a groove-style and then a complete Band plays your stuff.
