thats exactly the style of music i wanna get into... kinda of a swingy/chicken picken... i miss my guitar, being on the road so much, im gonna get a road guitar, maybe a tele or somethin, and a little amp.. man i wish i had my baby with me... i totally subsribed... keep it up brother... im goin through your video's like MAD!@!
I´m just using some reverb and turning the gain of the amp up quite far (but still almost clean). The compressed sound is the camera compression i think.
Great playing Holger, I'm a beginner guitarist and these County-blues licks you're playing there are just a great way to enhance my playing. If you could record some jazz and post video and tabs on your website it would be great. Keep on rockin' ;)
I just discovered this video of yours and I think it is just fantastic. You have sent me back to my room to work on my phrasing and licks. Thanks for the push to get back to work. ha.
GREAT !!! I play Rockabilly, but would like to introduce more (western) swing stuff in my playing. WHAT'S BOTHERING ME IS THE THEORY THAT SEEMS TO BE INVOLVED (could you tell me what's the best way to tackle this problem?).
I've just started out with Paul Pigat's DVD 'Jazzin Up Your Guitar'.
You do a great job. Ive been watching your videos and Im impressed. I've been playing for over 50 yrs. and met aand played with a lot of guitarist, and your very good. Keep it up.
This is a great tune. I have been working on it for a couple of weeks. I'm stuck on a couple of parts and I'm going blind trying to catch your finger placing on a couple of licks. Do you have some tab for it. Shure would appreciate it. What kind of amp and settings are you using?
I love this arrangement. Your playing is a breath of fresh air for the old style which I love. Are you going to post the tab for this on your web site. I would love to TRY to play it.
Always very good, now I try to learn your solo..... it is difficult. I arrange the brass for the tune and I hope to play this tune with my stage band, I give you some news about that. I don't forgot you. Renald.....
Wow, fantastic western swing playing! I play (among other styles) a variation of gypsy swing...but I love the steel guitar-like voicings you're using.
Holger, if you read this, let me know if you're in standard e-a-d-g-b-e tuning. It's hard to see your fingerings clearly, and I can't seem to get those open 6 and 9 chords to sound quite like you do.
Again, fantastic playing and you swing like crazy!
Wow...I'm glad I clicked on this one!! Awesome!! I've been interested in this guitar style since I first heard Asleep ATW....any reccomendations on how to learn this?
Fantastic skills! All your videos are lessons! Where did you get the backing tracks? If you have any tabs, I'd love to have em'! Thanks for the inspiration!
It's just simply amazing. Very very good taste, sound. Your fingers are playing just liek when Fred Astaire was dancing. His feet are didn't even touched the floor. It was so fluent. This is how you play. I love it
A POD into computer speakers! I love reading this. A great player can make anything work for them. It truely is all " in the hands ". Very inspiring, please keep posting.
By that I take it you mean, there are plenty of players around of this calibre? As a fellow picker, I think this guy is the real deal and in my opinion deserves a lot of respect...I don't get that comment!
I simply meant that there are a quite a few really good players on the site including Jim Campilongo, Forrest Lee Jr., Redd Volkaert, Brent Mason, and on.
haha. before listening to this vid i had no idea how 'western swing' sounded. AFTE listening to this, that is the ONLY way that i could describe this. sounds exactly like that. great playing.
I've always been a chicken picker but have lately wanted to expand into the jazzy western swing type thing I guess you'd call it. I LOVE the stuff you do when you switch to the necki pickup! That's what I wanna learn to do. What kind of scale are you using if you don't mind me asking? Anyway keep it up, this is all great stuff!
Hi Brad! I was mainly using a dominant scale (mixolydian) on each chord with some passing notes (for example in E: B-C-C#, "sixth-chord"),and a pentatonic blues scale (E,G,A,Bb,B,D,E). I kind of mix them together, but there´s no certain rule for that. I can recommend the "Homespun" videos by Ray Benson (Asleep at the wheel) and Mike Dowling - Swing Guitar. I learned a lot from them. Hope I could help you.
holger, amazing stuff, you have a really cool style man this tune is great, i loved those diminished 5th intervals around 00:58 they fit in great man, what do you use to make the backing track?? btw 5 million stars
Thank you David! That diminished 5th thing is is simply an E7-arpeggio where I skip one note and then go back up again...and so on. It´s a neat trick, but you can only use it once per gig:) I do my playbacks with "Band in a box". You enter your chords (breaks and so on), choose a groove-style and then a complete Band plays your stuff.
This would be a nice ironic track for a grisly movie scene.
