All the comments are true enough. But comments sections tend to bring out "flaming" type responses in people. I lived in Sofia for 5 months and enjoyed my time there. Indeed, Bulgarians are warm and proud people whose Cyrillic alphabet and, thus, literacy were spread to other Slavs and "mother" Russia by Baba (grandmother) Bulgaria. Everyone deserves to feel pride in their own culture. This is just an amateur video by a traveler and not meant to denigrate this country I think.

There is good and bad in most cities. Some areas in Sofia are run down but the historic sites are well preserved and are very beautiful. The people were very kind and friendly to me. It is the spirit of the Bulgarian people that makes the country so wonderful to visit. I loved visiting Bulgaria and hope to go back next year.

That contrast is a fact because we have quite a big history and buildings/places from the past are still present. That's actually how most of the European cities are. Before you go on talking bad about Bulgaria and it's amazing places, think where you came from. Sure it might not be the most beautiful place ever, but it means the world to others. I was born in Sofia and it is a great city, I love it with all my heart.
Wow, a lot of Bulgarians have a very thin skin here. The bland, run down sides of a city can be fascinating as well. The author makes it pretty clear that they had a focus on that and honestly, why not? No one is suggesting that all Sofia looks like that. I have been to Sofia many times. Yes, Sofia is a rather ugly city. Mainly because it is due to the lack of harmony: harmony among the styles of buildings. harmony among the fashions of people, harmony between interior and outside of a building and harmony between public spaces and private spaces. This lack of harmony may symbolize a history of Bulgaria. From one point of view, it is diverse and multi-layered but from another point it is impossibly entangled and messy.
This video is far from true and shows how little knows its operator for Bulgaria. It starts with one of the most important days for the Bulgarian History - The Day of Hristo Botev - fighter for freedom and independance, and these sirenas are to remember his sacrifice, that's why people stay still. It shows how superficial is its author, who even haven't made a simple try to understand what is this monument and why isn't finished. In conclusion it shows only stupidity, poor soul and foolish mind.

The author makes it pretty clear that they had a focus on that and honestly, why not? No one is suggesting that all Sofia looks like that. The video is making a big visual manipulation, does not show the main historical buildings of Sofia, and its great parks and unique architecture.
Using images is very easy to distort reality if you are not OBJECTIVE.
If the video seeks to discredit as a tourist destination Sofia, is far from it, a lot of people like Bulgaria and Sofia in particular is a city with lots of personality.

I have been to Sofia many times. Yes, Sofia is a rather ugly city. Mainly because it is due to the lack of harmony: harmony among the styles of buildings. harmony among the fashions of people, harmony between interior and outside of a building and harmony between public spaces and private spaces. This lack of harmony may symbolize a history of Bulgaria. From one point of view, it is diverse and multi-layered but from another point it is impossibly entangled and messy.

It starts with one of the most important days for the Bulgarian History - The Day of Hristo Botev - fighter for freedom and independance, and these sirenas are to remember his sacrifice, that's why people stay still. Of course, no harm meant, I was teasing you. BUT... that video is a JOKE, and as said in the text beside it we LOVED Sofia, and finally, that title isn't our own idea, it is the name of a chapter of a Bulgarian TOURISM BOOK about Sofia, a chapter called "Ugly Sofia". Don't you all people understand irony and humour? a year after we posted that video we still get comments loaded with hatred and racism and complaint when we wrote clearly that is was a joke and the title's not ours...

Hi guys, I think it is great!!! I was born in Sofia and of course as every city there is a beautiful and ugly side. There was a doubt about this " Monument" to keep it or to destroy it.. for now they decided to keep it. I think it is a good symbol - how UGLY was the Communism.
I realy like your point of view. Genial !!! :)
(and also as an educated film maker I can say you did it well)

Jeez how nice is it to read that comment; to be understood :-) thanks a lot for sharing that feedback. The weird monument I like, actually, it is so much unexpected and it looks like some weird artefact from a Monty Python movie or a Douglas Adams book :-)
