thanks, i'll try this technique next time i take mine off, when i first bought them due to the stiffness the tyre bead used to come off the other side as i hadnt strapped the tyre like this but getting the last bit over the rim was hell
good thing is i havent had a puncture in over a year
I watched this video and tried what was mentioned but I still can't get it on! I actually snapped one of my tyre levers trying to get it on! I'm a bit stumped.
Finishing at the valve, will give you a little bit more slack. especially on smaller wheels. Also make sure that the valve is vertical to the rim and not leaning at an angle. Other than that a lecture by someone who looks as if he's fitted as many tyres over the years as me. ;D
Just bought my schwalbe marathon plus tour HS404 tire. I have to admit this video saved me a lot of headaches and trouble. It is true you don't need any tire levers or gadgets to get the tire on....only a little hand strength needed and a few zip ties worked perfect for me....thanks again for this video!
A real englishman would have used some gloves and a lot of french chalk on the inside of the tyre!...and he would have drunk a cup of earl gray afterwards with a scone and then gave a sigh of relief and then would say: "that's a job well done!"
I've always had a blind-spot when it came to fitting a new tube. You know, the last bit, that impossible (to me ) section of tyre hanging over the rim, that -no matter how hard I tried, would NOT go over. Sore thumbs. Broken tyre levers... Until now! The front wheel I've had in my hallway for 2 weeks is now on my bike thanks to your genius use of zip ties. Your demo is a life-changer! Thanks!
I'd just been swearing away in the garage for 30 min when I decided to see if anyone else had similar problems putting these tyres on. After watching your video I went straight back to the garage and 5 mins later everything was done. Thanks for your help.
these tires may not fit well and wheels can get bumpy on the road after putting them on (check the reflective stripe is always parallel to your rim). apply the maximum air pressure in the tire as you can (up to 70 psi or a little bit more which is quiet high) and wait for a klak sound. you may need to try a few times before you succeed. use something lubricant for better and easier fitting.
BIG THANKS for this video! I have already installed many kevlar bed road tyres wthout any serious problem, but fitting this Schwalbe Marathon Plus 26x1,0 (25 x 559) to my Mavic 717 rim was a real excruciation....But your toe stripe idea was a BIG HELP :) Beside 3 toe stripes I had to use my radiator and hair-drier too at the last few centimeters. And yes, now I am happy : D Thank you again!
awesome video, i just ordered a pair of these tires and the reviews were scaring me about how difficult they are to mount. this seems very manageable to me now.
I bought a pair of Marathon Plus tyres a couple of years ago.
I tried for over 40 minutes to get a tyre on without success..Eventually i telephoned a cycle shop for advice. When that did not work i telephoned another cycle shop, and another until one person gave excellent simple advice...
I use this simple advice and put on a marathon plus tyre without any straps, levers etc.
As for the tyre itself, its a very puncture resistant tyre, but, just too heavy and rigid...

Nice video. I hadn't seen anyone use toe straps before.
I hadn't seen anyone use toe straps before to help hold the tire (tyre) in the well of the rim. Nice trick.
One quibble: you say to start mounting the second side of the tire at the valve. Especially, a fat, Schrader valve in a narrow rim may keep the tire bead out of the well of the rim, so it's best to start opposite the valve -- but then to be especially attentive that the valve is not trapped under the bead wire.
WOW!! Thanks so much for this!!!! I spent 45min on the front tyre, thought it was impossible until I saw this video! I used selotape around the wheel to compress the tyre onto the rim and create slack. After watching this I got the tyre on within 10min and the second one within 5min total!!! Big thumbs up!!!
Thanks so much for uploading this - saved me considerable time and kept my blood pressure lower than usual when having to re-fit the tyres! Didn't even need zip ties or toe straps to make it work.
Wow.. how glad am I that found this video.. saved me paying someone at the bike shop to fit them for me. I spent over an hour fitting the 1st SMP to my MB rear 26'' wheel and gave up having broken 2 tyre levers. With the tips in this vid I was able to fit both tyres within 20 mins! p.s. I didn't even use ties or rope, just kept rotating wheel pushing the beads in with my thumbs (approx. 30 rotations).
Thanks so much. I applied so much pressure my thumbnails bled - and that was while practicing without an inner tube. The toe straps or zip ties are key!
Thank you SO MUCH. I pressed so hard my thumbnails literally started to bleed on my 20" M+ - and that was when I was practicing WITHOUT an inner tube! The zip ties / toe straps are key.
There's a mistake in this. I've known about pushing the bead in all round for years, but the mistake is in having ANY air in the tube. It's a lot easier if there isn't. I never have to use toestraps and so on.
@golaoi Always start with air in the tube to give it the shape needed, but maybe let a bit out if side 2 is tricky, as this makes it easier to get the slack described - without straps as you say.
(Note - I put the tube in after I've done side 1, but each of us differs and I can't criticise what I can see working well on this film!)
Brilliant. Thank you.

If anyone has the chance to go to Harrogate, go to Spa cycles, it's an old fashioned shop and these are now a rarity.

just use a tyre lever at that last point to pull some slack into the bead.. saves messing around with straps and saves your thumbs.
