Little known is that Thoreau was not self sufficient but relied on his neighbors kindness to supply his needs. I greatly admired Thoreau in my youth he inspired me to become more self sufficient and read everything I could get my hands on about him, Walden Pond, transcendentalism, and self-sufficiency until I came across that story of his kindly neighbors. Needless to say I was disappointed and disillusioned, but it was not a total loss as I've embraced an independent lifestyle which served me.
Amazing video. Thank you. Have anyone here heard of Andrew London? I believe he is the new Thoreau! There is a scene in his novel where his hero is sailing the sea. He has packed novels by Hem, Melville, etc. He gets depressed and throws them overboard and then wishes he would have packed Thoreau. Very vivid and moving scene. Anyone who loves Thoreau will love Andrew London. Very deep and philosophical. I wonder if he's related to Jack?
No but now that you've mentioned, I'll do some research on him. What book of his is that? And that's really intriguing that he could be a relation of Jack.
Funny that when think of Thoreau, I think of Jack London too, caused by watching Into the Wild.
Can you upload more of these?? You should definitely upload some more videos if you can because these are the kinds of videos that keep me sane during a 5 hour lecture in class.
@Msoolala Too true, and besides- those would one might think of as the people most fit to lead almost never would have or do want to. Leadership is something egotistical(there is an undeniable sense of self power that goes into it) a characteristic great advanced thinkers as Thoreau do not possess.
I live less than an hour from Walden Pond, but I live along the Merrimack River on the Mass/NH border. Thoreau describes the area in his A WEEK ON THE CONCORD AND MERRIMACK RIVERS. He described a world that today shows only vestiges of familiarity. Some people may call that sad.
The natural landscape. Today he would have found condominiums and a golf course on the very spot where he describes a skirmish between settlers and Native-Americans. It's the same spot where the Nashua River extends from the Merrimack River.
If you want World PEACE, then please Read and Recommend "THE ART OF PEACE" by Morihei Ueshiba, (founder of Aikido - the martial art of love), to Everyone you Know and Love. Thank You. (So Be It.)
I am tired of life, hitting rock bottom and facing tremendous stress but I am realizing a way to face it! I hope I can share it with you also about Jesus. I lay all my stress, bills, relationships and hurtful feelings down at the feet of Jesus and in return receive freshness and rest. "call upon his name and you shall be saved." Isn;t that awesome? Pray to him and call upon him and lay your burdens...Trust in the almight son of god, the only way to salvation! he is the true light..Jesus christ!
Modern transcendentalism, now there might be a budding idea. Civil disobedience and conscience, we certainly need that in these trying times. More of us should know about Thoreau. Thank you for this.

Why on earth can't we ever have someone like him in charge, just once for a change
ehrija94hyeaehrij 3 years ago 12
He would never want to be 'in charge' he would say "you are incharge of yourself." Read his essay Civil Disobediece and take action!

Thoreau didn´t withdraw very far from society . Walden pond is less than 7 miles from the town of Concorde ... Still, a great guy he remains !/
Good vid !
