"We were asked to perform at the University of Nebraska during their 'Second Title' National Championship Celebration. I was asked to write a song for this event by my good friend Brook Berringer, Quarterback for the Cornhuskers. The song was never heard and the celebration never took place due to Brook's tragic death one day prior to the event. #18 The Nebraska Song was inspired by Brook and is dedicated to his memory -Mark." (From the Six Days on the Road cd, which this song appears.)
@arohn2007 Actually he did get to hear it, I went to a FCA deal at the University a few years ago and Mark Miller was there and talked about his relationship with Brooke and said that he sang it to him over the phone a few days before he died in the plane crash. You can definitely tell from his stories about Brooke that they were pretty close and when he sings it you can tell that he has some troubles holding back his emotions
@maritrist Yeah it is. The sad part is that Brook never got to hear the song, he was killed before Sawyer Brown released it on their new album. Mark Miller did a terrific job singing it and he's got a great voice. He sounds just as good in a outdoor concert..To me thats how you know someone can truely sing.
I was a little kid when Brook died and to this day it is the only time I have ever cried over someone I have never met. I remember I even did a book report about Brook in high school. He was a guy that never gave up and will always be remembered in Husker Nation.....GO BIG RED
This song hits home every time i hear it. My father worked for Brook's uncle at the time of the accident i remember how hard it was on every one Rest In Peace Brook
I work at a country station in north-central Nebraska, and every year, the Friday before the first Husker game of the season I make it a point to play this song on the air in Brook's memory.
I was heartbroken when I heard that Brook died, I was looking forward to going to the "National Championship Party" which was canceled and had hopes of seeing where Brook went in the NFL. His NFL team was going to be my new favorite. RIP Brook you'll be remembered forever.
@huskerfan4life same here, my mom was going to take a me and a friend (i was 13 at the time) up to lincoln for the ceremony and when we heard the news we just couldn't believe it. Brook was a very special human being.
I went to school with Brooke and let me tell you we all were heart broken after his death, he and other Huskers came down to goodland to play a fun game of Basketball with the Goodland Seniors and he was to leave Goodland to Lincoln and then he was going to the NFL draft where I think Kansas City Chiefs were going to pick him up
does any one know the actual name of this song? i live about 40 minutes from his home town "goodland" they have a nice memorial for him in the highschool
There is something to be said for playing and winning with honour. In Nebraska, that means running the ball and having pride in the past. In not sure if Callihan ever really understood that.
Ya, there are times when the wind blows a certain way that I think of what Big Red will look like. Castille could be fun to watch. I know he's just a soph but... man it would be fun to watch them run with intent again. I can understand that college ball is different these days and the people think that you can't run like Doctor Tom's boys did but I'm not convinced. I don't think it is that different than the 90's and as long as the QB has some down field play action targets it could work.
I don't think Callahan understood the spirit of Husker football at all, and personally I think Steve Pederson's at least partially to blame for that, because Pederson tried his damnedest to destroy it.
Fair enough. I guess I'm like %90 of Husker fans who looked at Callahan's smug face and got all huffy. The AD has a big part to play in the direction they went as well. You know, it might be sacrilege but do you remember when Schnellenberger went to OU? He may not have been successful but at least he said all the right things. He made the connection to their past and that seemed to make them feel good for a while. Callihan came in with the typical pro attitude and it just didn't wash.
I was at the FCA banquet the night Brook died. Coach Osborne broke the news to us. My favorite memory of Brook was when he came to our church's preschool to read a story to a gym full of little kids who had no clue who he was. I was amazed he took the time to forget the national championship, upcoming games, etc. to take the time to read a story to a group of children. That's one of the marks of a real champion. No wonder UNL fans will always love Brook. He was an on & off the field hero.
I thank you and say that as a young man growing up in this state i feel this song embraces the true husker spirit that has been lost by our players and staff. we need the brook effect back
Oh my gosh... Thank you so much for posting. I was there in those stands for this performance, crying my heart out with the rest of the audience. Even today, 10 years later, I cried watching this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting.

@bahaugse They were good friends, Mark Miller was a pallbearer at Berringer's funeral. The song was written before Brook Berringer died.
