  • Um, it's a peddle steel guitar!

  • What instrument is the guy on the left playing?

  • @noahm177 It's a steel guitar, but I'm not sure what kind of a steel guitar it is. Maybe someone else can elaborate. Love the sound.

  • this is absolutely lovely.

  • check out that tambourine part the bass player kicks around. so cool.

  • love EVERYTHING from the live from texas album

  • check her out with the new pornographers on the " crash years" song .

    killer new indie hit

  • absolutely love it!

  • not too much reverb on the vox, perfect mix - haunting lyrics...just perfect performance.

  • Absolutely. Love. This.

  • Neko Case is one of the best singers in American popular music today, IMHO. She's not just a singer, but a force of nature, a spirit on fire.

  • @CoolWorldMusic Have to disagree - she is the best vocalist in any popular music anywhere, and that's just a fact of nature. Incredibly expressive and powerful. She's smokin' in every sense. A fearfully tight band too and some mighty killer steel. A+++

  • what song is it?

  • She reminds me a lot of Patty Griffin...

  • CalebDeike - According to Acoustic Guitar Magazine that is a '67 Gibson SG Special Tenor. : )

  • @02R96 It's a tenor, but not a Gibson. That one's an old Martin. She does own a white SG solid body tenor, but that's not it.

  • Neko Case can control how red her hair is...

  • she also uses a converted gibson sg for a tenor guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • tenor guitar

  • Does anybody know if the instrument Neko is playing is a Gibson LGO guitar that's been converted to a ukulele? I thought the largest conventional ukulele (baritone) had an overall length of 30"....this instrument seems to have a length in the 38" - 42".

  • It's a tenor guitar, normally tuned in fifths usually CGDA, giving it a very "open sound". Neko states (in Acoustic Guitar Magazine) that she prefers the tenor guitar to a six string because she can't make "a six string guitar sound like music". I doubt that!

  • awesome pedal steel

  • My first Neko Case song, I'm entranced.

  • Where ya been for the past 10 years?

  • Anybody know where I can find this whole ACL performance in decent quality? I have a Ryan Adams ACL performance to trade if interested- the one that starts with "Kiss before I go" and ends with "Cold Roses". Thanks

  • Its available for sale on DVD. You should support the show if you like its stuff. Public TV is having a hard time

  • Neko is my favorite bad habit

  • @bangfoo

Why is Neko a BAD habit???????

  • @bangfoo

    Or, good one! =)

  • Quiero a Neko en México.

  • AWESOME! Thank you so much!! I absolutely love this song. Can't get enough of it!

I'm looking forward to playing it : )

  • There's a trick known by Seattle's bartenders to put on Neko at about 1am so all the drunk single DUDES hangin out til closing time ... bail before the end of the 3rd tune.

  • this comment offended me initially but upon reflection I notice it is a big compliment

  • This is amazing. I'd pretty much given up on popular music and retreated to my Bach and Mozart. What an idiotic world we live in when "singers" like Britney Spears and her ilk make millions from tasteless fools and confused adolescents.

  • God, I wish they'd have planted the camera soley on Neko. Because that is ALL I want to look at.

  • I wanna make out with Neko and Kelly!!!

  • This just blew me away!!

  • I can't count the amount of times I've watched this clip. Simply amazing.

  • Me too, love that tenor guitar and her vocal performance. You really get the mood in this one, comes through crystal clear. Favorite is another good one.

  • Beautiful and wonderful. Neko saves my life, over and over again...

  • She sings like someone you don't want to piss off, make sense?

  • Yeah, and that pisses her off......

  • Hey Neko fans, GREAT NEWS

Neko Case's acclaimed new album Middle Cyclone (Anti- Records) has debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200, the highest opening to date in 2009 by an independent release on Billboard's main album chart. Middle Cyclone also bows at #1 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.

Case's strong showing follows recent television appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC and The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS, as well as widespread critical acclaim for Middle Cyclone.

  • Oh, I bought it on the day of release. Neko Case is an artist the world is lucky to have.

  • Tons o' talent on that stage - not to slight Neko, but Jon Rauhouse (pedal steel) and Kelly Hogan (backup vox) are incredibly gifted musicians in their own right.

  • And don't forget Tom V. Ray on upright bass.

  • Haunting vocals.

  • I can't wait to see Neko in April! I'm sure it will be fantastic!

  • Gotta give it up for that steel guitar

  • This just blows me away, fantastic!

  • sound***********

  • Nice legs..Good soung..always been a fan.

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • It's a tenor guitar. It has four strings with the same range as the 'spanish' or 6 string guitar. Tenor guitars have a different sound than spanish guitars. They are tuned differently as well.

  • thanx!

  • This is "Behind the House" on the live DVD from her ACL show.

  • If you don't have the dvd, go get it!

Not only is the music amazing, but the sound and picture quality on the disk is outstanding(unlike some concert dvd's)

    Happy Listening!

  • DTS for the WIN! :)

  • Goddamn I love Neko.

  • the first time i saw neko case on A,C,L my jaw droped. OMG .i belive shes a special talent.her music has hints of bluegrass, contry and rock but its not realy any of those typs of music, true talent tends to invent its self. shes awsom!

  • She's practically flawless...

  • What a voice!

  • DAMN!!!!! That dude on the Fu#$ing steel!!!!!!

What an ass kicking steel solo!!

  • That's Jon Rauhouse. He has some solo albums out.

  • Humminbird from Chicago has a steel player that is amazing, too.

  • I love that she's in those huge heels while playing this show.

  • Kelly Hogan has one of the most beautiful voices of this century, you damn idiot.

  • I agree. I love Kelly Hogan.

  • So I wasn't the only one who thought her website was a little self-engaged.

  • Well it's her website, about her... and pretty much all the people she performs with have their own website.

  • thank you!!!!!!!

  • Thank you jennbeez!!! to clarify

  • Haunting and beautiful.

  • Another performance with the Tenor Guitar is Ani DiFranco Hypnotized on Henry Rollins Show. Search youtube and you'll find. I like the sound.

  • check out Jon Rauhouse back in 1985 with Norm Pratt a beautiful song Norm wrote and performed on my televison show come by and have a look- best regards, joelsamuelpresents aka bscactuspresents

  • This woman is amazing. And the DVD is excellent, though a little bit too short. I'm hoping she'll give out another LIVE DVD.

  • you don't see a lot of people playing a tenor ukelele these days. kinda neat!

  • It's actually a tenor guitar. But yeah, it's not a common instrument these days. Neko actually has both acoustic and electric tenor guitars that she uses on stage these days.

  • Yup yup. She uses the tenor guitar because her fingers are too small haha. :]

  • Why thank you! :D I'm sure this small sized mind will have fun with her full scholarship!

I don't even know why you offended me... if you think I was making fun of Neko, I wasn't, I adore her. If not... well then have fun insulting people today, suits you quite well.

  • Stupid idiot! Hope you didn't post this shit to three videos!

  • I looked all over her website and found more info than I needed about how much she hates her family, and zero info about the members of her band, which is what I was really looking for. Cry me a friggin' river.

  • She doesn't rant about how she hates her family by the way. Learn how to read.

  • and I quote from her website: "From about age four to age fifteen, I was raised by dogs and cats. I occasionally intersected with my parents by accident. "Oh it's you?! I have to make you a lunch, don't I?" As I grew into a young adult I was very confused and lacked direction. My parents very much wanted me to become a crack-whore, but I gravely disappointed them by graduating from college. Though they did not notice until years after the event, they still take my failings personally."

  • Yeah well that's only in the introduction. It's not like she says stuff like that all over her page...

  • An introduction is an introduction; it's a damn paragraph, pal, and it doesn't overpower her entire website by any means. I don't find that there is anything wrong with an artist expressing their background or where their inspiration comes from, especially if they go out of their way to do it in a comical, "non-bleeding heart" fashion. And furthermore, if you go to say, Prince's website, you're going to find mostly information about Prince, not The Revolution.

So cry me "a friggin' river".

  • I think you are my new best friend...

  • This topic was brought up on a radio interview just over a year ago, seems the guy interviewing her didn't dig too deep into her past to ask relevant questions, therefor asked about her website intro. Neko's answer was pretty much "the things written on that page are not meant to be taken seriously."

She is known for her sardonic sense of humor.

  • Awesome as always. :o) I love Neko... I hope that I get to see her live someday. *sighs*

  • Thank you for this posting.

  • I love this song. She performed it as part of a Triple R broadcast a couple of years ago and I have always wanted to know what it is. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Is Flaming Sword going to be on the DVD? I looked at the advertised setlist and was bummed to see this song wasn't listed (although it was part of the TV broadcast).

    Either way, thanks for posting!

  • Let me answer my own question...the song IS on the DVD and is called "Behind the House." When I saw her perform the song live in 2002, she called the song "Flaming Sword."

  • she also says on the DVD before she starts it that she's had this song for about a year, and still doesn't have a name for it...

  • she's great
