Good game although it was ruined a bit by some questionable racist dialog (the developers apparently hate British people) and samey storylines that all end up with the player become a god-like entity. The ships were also far too unbalanced it was too easy to make money.
The complexity of the resource system and failure to produce a plugin-editor prevented the community from developing many decent plugins as they had done for the originals.
I agree with you, I really liked the game, being a fan of the first two, but I totally didn't like the storyline paths that really threw a fork in the road as far as it's linear play goes. My first storyline was Vellos and naturally, you didn't know what to expect when first taking their mission, and next thing you know, you're STUCK with whatever ship you began the quest with. Perhaps if they introduced a bit of online play, it would've caught on, but there's already EVE...bummer
