IT IS TRULLY AMAZING WHAT HE ACHIEVED IN THOSE YEARS. UNBELIEVABLE PIANO PLAYING AND WE CAN SAFELY SAY THAT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THESE PIECES GOT PLAYED THE WAY THEY SHOULD. BUT THE LIGHTS DID NOT SHINE FOR EVER, EVEN FOR HIM...WHEN I HEARD HIM IN LONDON IN THE EIGHTIES THERE WERE NO "MARVEILLES" LIKE THESE FANTASTIC MIROIRS...
It must have been at performances like this that brought about the Richter legend. I think the audience would have been in a trance-like state listening to this. So hypnotizing. I at least have seldom heard this kind of spontaneous coloring and dynamics. The great man surely transcended the instrument with this Ravel!
Another masterpiece by Ravel! Those lush harmonies are simply breathtaking! Superb tone control displayed here by Richter here as well. You can really here the different "bells" in the background.
This Ravel:Miroirs posted by truecrypt is the greatest piano playing I've heard on YouTube, bar none. When Richter was inspired it's as though he was making up the music in the spot; never have I heard such colorful imagination coupled with such technical mastery!
I fully agree with you. I find Richters version of this play "La vallée des cloches" even better than the one played by Ravel. The atmosphere created by Richter is dark and warm.
4realrussians: ... smithsher... again! It is not only "Russian" language, but also "thoughts" like echo from madhouse. Think he wants to "steal" a slice of Richter ' s fame. :-), but that's impossible (Though I am happy this time "smithshermann" did not use obscene or sexually explicit words to comment on beautiful music the way he did it before...)
A simply beautiful performance, this is certainly worth 5+ stars. But then, Richter rarely, if ever, failed to perform at the level that only he attained.
Please do not fail to put in your two cents worth SS, preferably in English. Sadly, I cannot read Russian. I'm sure that any elucidation would be welcomed by all.
Even if there were to be "parallels" it wouldn't matter because when I check my intuition about what music can be...the readout is maxed and overloaded here.

Noctuelles ("Night Moths") - first.
Oiseaux tristes ("Sad Birds") - second.
Une barque sur l'océan ("A boat on the Ocean") - third.
Alborada del gracioso ("The Gracioso's Aubade") - fourth.
La vallée des cloches ("The Valley of Bells") - fifth.
So, it isn't 4/4, it's 5/5.

Richter plays it in a slow perfect mood. Very sophisticated and contemplative. Simply breathtaking

Richter creates an amazingly amtospheric mood that's totally compelling.

I always loved Ravel's compositions...They are so rich and very colourful in terms of tone.
Richter does justice to this piece as well. His Jeux D'eau is probably the best version I've heard yet as he followed Ravel's instructions.
And Ravel never liked rubato.

I thought I had heard this piece a 100 times before, but it's like I just heard it for the first time again.
Looks like I've got to find more Richter CD's, heh.

Yuri, I completely agree with your comment.

The russian comment coming from Captain, "sliver" Smithsherman is quite profound regarding the singularity of consciousness and eternity.
