Total poser. I mean fuck, it's not like he's the top selling blues musician in the world right now. Not like he's played with Clapton, King, Guy, and Beck, and held his own. It's not like he was called the new generation guitar god by rolling stone magazine. Hendrix was the best and always will be, and if you understand that you should be able to understand that Mayer is probably the best since SRV. He's definitely not a poser, and if you know shit all about guitar, you should know that.
He IS a poser. All of his music is stolen from greats like Hendrix or repackaged pop. He is not original and just because he sells a lot of records and has Rolling Stone saying he's great doesn't mean sh*t. Britney Spear and NSYNC sold a lot of records too! His tone and technique are good, but overall it's meaningless since he has no soul. If you don't understand this I can't help you, it would be like trying to explain Calculus to a retard. Only women like John Mayer and it's not for his music.
He can't be a poser and still get respect from Clapton King Guy Beck and Scoffield. Same with Rolling Stone. Yes you can sell a lot of records and not be talented, but combine those three facts and you have yourself a talented guitarist. He covers some Hendrix songs yes, and some of his covers like "California Dreamin" are basically just Hendrix applied to another song, but listen to Continuum. Watch him play songs like "out of my mind" and "gravity" and you cannot say he has no soul.
sorry, he is a poser. he does have mad guitar skills, but his head/heart/soul/songwriting are not in that genre.
its nice that he can party with the big boys and go for the "street cred" at his live shows, but its not the real him -- at least not judging by the songs he writes and records.

you gotta go back and look at his full career. it's easy to judge him based on the obvious radio stuff. listen to his stuff from back when he was 14, 16, and at berklee. the guy was covering srv and hendrix since he picked up the guitar. he took a huge leap trying to bring blues back with a trio. remember no multiplatinum, number 1 hit, artist has ever made a leap like that. no one. dropping pop, where you are assured millions, and success to play blues. your heart has to be in it to do that
@pbl1 you realize he is literally once in a lifetime talent. You're ignorant as hell if you can honestly say a man who dropped making millions to make blues (which he loves) doesn't have soul. Then I have no idea what soul is.

That being said, SRV was amazing and a legend...and Mayer knows how to play

Its just a left handed neck, the body of guitar is still the right way, just the headstock is flipped.
