Hockney Green is his main contribution to painting, usually vivid green frightens away artists but Hockney thrives on it's use especially after he returned to England to paint plein air landscapes. His personna is bigger than his art with the exception of a few early paintings but his recent plein air landscapes have put him at the top of contemporary artists and help restore England's art credibility.
Would love to see the whole documentary. Considering the number of artists out there producing work, there's not really that many documentaries on artists that are well produced.
This one is very intriguing. No doubt about it, David is one of the great artists of our time.
Man, I can't believe anyone in their right mind thinks this is remarkable or fabulous. Maybe now would be a good time for Hockney to take art lessons, I'm sure he can afford it.
By the way, criticizing the work of the old painters is not a good way for Hockney to disguise his lack of talent as an artist. Take a look as his drawings!
A lot of people seem to be put off by this film, due to the fact that thay are expecting a standard documentary--for me, the film is so much more than that-it's incredibly ambitious in structure & really captures an amazing cultural window, with some fascinating people. IMO it's
one of the best portraits of an artist ever put on celluloid.

Hockney's a great artist. Look at his painting called 'mr and mrs white with percy'. It's like a photograph.

A painting being like a photograph does not mean its great.

I like his earlier work very much-but he did
kind of lose the plot later in his career. A lot of the greats
did, though. cf. Jasper Johns !

I think Hockney's drawings are exceptional pieces of work, proabably what he'll be best remembered for.

Read DH's "Secret Knowledge". He happens to love old painters.

I thought it was beautiful but really bloody boring. I liked the bits where they filmed the locations of some of his paintings
