It is sad that software and technology are so much less expensive now, than they were back when the Mountain Bros. dropped this LP. Somehow, these guys managed to produce beats with far more soul. These days, beats have sparse instrumentation, often relying on an 808 or 303 kick, a hi-hat and a chant. What happened to groups like this or The Roots?
On September 20th all of Tupacs and old school fans are going to watch 2pacs Hit em up video on youtube which currently has 39 million views.

Well I just discovered Mountain brothers today. I really wish i would have listen to this when I was younger. These guys are amazing. It is really a shame they disbanded. But their music will never die.
every "underground" hip hop youtube video has the same comment as the one on this video with the most thumbs up.first they point out the state of the game then they say how underrated the artist is then they name a few radio rappers they dislike & compare them to them.then if u say something they dont like they say u dont know hip hop then say that u must listen to so & so (somebody they consider whack)
@anarkie whats your point? they(we) are right. from 84 to 94-95, 80% of hip hop was destined to be future classics, only we didn't really know it at the time. we had no clue that 10, 15, 20 years later 80% of hip hop would have anti boom bap digital synth jiggy club dance techno beatz with empty, materialistic rhymez. when ice-t & kool g rap rhymed about assets & bling, there was always a message as well. youtube search " 1970s pro wrestling " & read the comments. lamentin the bygone golden era.
@JimiBrady yeah don't pay attention to the comercial stuff any more there's lots of hip hop like this they just don't play it on radio or tv that much if at all anymore. Sucks though people have a bad inturpritation of what hip hop is because of that.
man this is the shit one of the best hip hop songs ever for real i dont care what i have to do to keep this track alive in the future ima do it ima put there cd in a vault so it never gets scratched and pull it out forty yrs later for my grand kids to show em real good music
One of my all time favorite tracks. I was never a huge Mountain Brothers fan, but there's a lot of great stuff on that debut. I never quite understood why they didn't take off--their first album sold well in underground circles, they had that Sprite commercial etc...
i seriously put this in my top 3 hip hop songs of all time. everything about it..when it came out hip hop was in such an amazing stage
funny story
we were upstate and this one real grimy street nigga (good friend of ours, but still outside th click) went down to the city for a few days, then tried to freestyle with these lyrics. he didnt know we got a stretch armstrong tape mailed up to us that week, we already knew the song and called him out for his fake ass freestyle
im glad to hear they became doctors, i got the cd and some of their 12' singles. but the question is do they still like the type of hiphop that they made?
Honestly...what happened to good hip-hop?! It's truly sad. I would pay good dough to see guys like this beat the shit out of Kanye, T-Pain and Lil' Wayne.
Better yet, a battle series to expose the fuckin' fakes. Make it happen...
@AGCYIN I believe they broke up...but I heard Chops is still at it...being a producer for lil wayne and others artists which is stupid as fuck...because they're hella fuckin dope! Hip pop would be at a better state with these guys...
@AGCYIN I believe they broke up...but I heard Chops is still at it...being a producer for lil wayne and others artists which is stupid as fuck...because they're hella fuckin dope! Hip pop would be at a better state with these guys...
@AGCYIN It's a relief to see some people on the internet with some sense in music. Everything about the old skool is better, for example: Beats, lyrics, artists and more. Plus the mountain Brothers made their own beats... not enough recognition!
I love this! I remember them from back in the day! Yo, I was so expecting them to blow up. They got that oldschool Pharcyde, Lost Boys vibe going on !!
they broke up for a very good reason. one of them became a doctor, another one became a medical researcher. chops is the only one still actively making music. he's recently worked with chamillionaire, bun b, and many other well known rappers.
thats actually a very good point. they are pushing, inadaquatly tested drugs like prozac and valium for drug companies glaxo ect and getting their cut.
They broke because sadly, despite the fact that they were clearly talented, they still had problems with getting promoted by record companies because they were Asian-American--which was ridiculous as hell, but that was what they said in an interview. Damn shame, because this song and "Galaxies" would have gotten mad play on radio stations back in the late '90's here in Detroit.
Well, there's a Roots sample in the chorus. But as far as the composition aspect Chops doesn't do sampled loops.
I don't mind what he's doing now...i just wish he didn't do it to the exception of stuff like this. Also, he's nasty on the mic. He needs to rap again.
i found this track a few years ago...these dudes are straight ill...they need to come back and show these commercial rap niggas how rhyme, long live the hip-hop underground, much props to the Mountain Brothers
