  • What do you tie the ends to? or how do you tie it?

  • @TheHoneyfrog

The tie can be difficult alone on some shirts - so get some help if you need to...

but I just tie that string into a knot... like your shoes when you get a knot in them.

Any knot that will stay tight - then I cut it when it is rinse time - or let it slip off...

  • you have good music taste my friend

  • what do you mean by tie dye is not a long term spectator sport?

  • @i1234t1234

Well, unless everyone can participate, it can get boring after a while just standing around watching.

Depends on the crowd and the scene...

  • ...I usually die each quarter a different color. Very cool. Your demo was very good. LOVE the music. You have great taste. Peace.

  • Cool stuff. It took me a long time to get my spider fold right. My spider pattern was always upside down. When you fold your shirt in half as you have shown, if your sleeves are on the right, pinch the material and spin in a counterclockwise direction or if your sleeves are on your left after folding the shirt, pinch the material and spin in a clockwise direction. I tie my bundle across the middle in pie wedges, at least in quarters, then die one side all black (spider) and the other side.......

  • I love your vids!!! Thanks for taking the time to show us newbies some options we have...Roll away the dew!!!

  • hehe I love how you go round the table! I hope you change direction each time, or you could get dizzy o.O hehe

That spider one is really kool btw! I like the 2 colour spider.. do you have vids of how the reverse spider turns out?

  • I liked your vid thanks dude!!

  • Is this the Grateful Dead?

  • ya its 'Franklin's Tower' its a great jam

  • Sorry, not sure of the actual show... but yes it is The Dead... you can look up the city it is from... Dick's Picks Volume 17 is the album compelation.

  • whats uera? do you mean urea? thats mammal urine if im correct?

  • Urea is the correct spelling.

It helps retain moisture in the fabric during the "batching" period.

It is added to the dye mixture only.

  • so if i was to use this stuff... should I buy it or just do it myself? :S

  • Thanks men, really explicit video ;)

  • do you know if rit dye is any good?

  • Yes, RIT works alright.

I have used that as well as DYLON in the past - but RIT was better.

You need to really be sure to mix them super well... and try a bit of heat or steam to help set it.

The Procion is much nicer, but way harder to get...

    Happy Dying!

  • *****

I am working on a comparrison video showing three different types of dye.

    Rit is one of them...

    Should be up in November.

    *****

  • november 2009??

  • Time sure flies by... should have that up early in February 2009.

  • alright

  • March 15 is looking good...

  • yo the first clours were my school colours nice

  • good job with this video

    neat designs

  • what brand of dye are you using?

  • These are PROCION-MX dye.

A powder based dye mixed with water, salt, uera, and soda ash.

  • you do it so neatly

&& your shirts come out so well.

    (:

  • Love the DEAD in the background!!! Nice instruction. May the fore winds always blow you safely home! ;)

  • I think I understand how to dye but I am still not sure what to dye with. Does it have to be a store bought product or can the dye be made w/household goods?

  • I would guess any liquid that could stain cotton would work as a dye.

    That might be really neat.

I am using a comercial dye, but your idea is very environment friendly (potentially)... you just need to find the right goods...

  • Hi, I did my first tie dye today, i chose the shoulder burst design, I used RIT dye, will it still do the job? Also I forgot to tye the shirt but its still in the correct shape, I have it in a bag and ill find out soon how it turned out. Thanks for the video.

  • Cool on your first!

    I hope it works out.

RIT are ok, but not as bright as these dyes are.

I found RIT needed to be mixed really well - no powder or grains undesolved.

I can not remember how we set those dyes though, so I hope the waiting works well.

Steam or heat seems to be a good way...

  • Beautiful but there's no need to run around the table! Use a fork like you spin spaghetti!!! MUCH easier... although you burn more calories YOUR way. :o)

  • Cool...

  • It helps burn off the too much Ale I seem to keep stored around my waist!

  • You are fantastic. I am brasilian. I love tie dye. Thankas God.

  • Thanks for showing me how to do these. I'm glad you support free information.

  • Some of the tie-dye designs are far more than tie-dye.

They include stiching and sometimes waxing...

Some people are amazingly tallented at that side of things.

Best idea is to keep searching the Net for instructions (not just here)... there are many people that have done this for years willing to share - not just those wanting money for the info.

I only know these basics... and will work on more. I am a "once in a while" dyer - not an all the time one (anymore). Basics.

    Great luck to you !

  • hey men thanks for the vid i seen a guy with the brazilian flag tie dyed i was wondering how did he do it?

    can u help me out?

  • Too true... and a pile of ones that did not work out.

I find it is easy to be critical on what I do myself... it is addictive to make tie-dye!

  • You must own a million tie-dye shirts!

  • What an awesome how to!!! You really helped me out. I like your spinning around the table!!! Cute!! One question, have you found a cheaper way to buy dye?? It is so expensive!! And just had to say, you picked my all time favorite "Dead" song to groove to through your video! Thanks man!!!

  • Hi

Dye prices are no fun. I think the only real way to catch a break is buying huge amounts.

I have tried many, many dye types... these ones I have found the most satisfying...

    Thanks !

  • Very thorough.

    Very well done.

    :D.

    Good job.

  • thanks for the video and all the explanations. i must state that it really helped me. and i was wondering if you're going to make any videos showing how to dye peace signs, mandalas, hearts, aliens and such stuff. best wishes.

p.s. nice home by the way.

  • Hi

    Thanks for looking.

I am going to try to upload a video on a few other designs, but the super strange I am yet to figure out.

I will keep on it though...

    Thanks again!
