  • Siskel DID miss the point.

  • Even Ebert held back on his review of Ferris. The stuff with the Principal wasn't funny ???

  • I absolutely loved FBDO when I was a kid. Taped it off Showtime and watched it at least 3 times a week.... now in my 30s I can't imagine what I liked about the movie. It doesn't hold up at all.

"Back to School" does. Rodney Dangerfield at his best

  • @scottl20az I guess I just never grew up. I loved FBDO when I was a kid in the 80s and I love it now at age 41. Sure, some bits of the silly physical humor don't hold up, but I still love the film. But "Back to School" has aged MUCH better, no doubt.

  • @paxpaul well you got a decade on me so you probably relate better and have more memories with FBDO. Sort of like I'm sure American Pie will for me in ten years.

  • WHAT? HOW DARE GENE HAVE OPINIONS, WE SHOULD ALL THINK THE SAME WAY. THE NAZIS WERE RIGHT.......

  • Fuck Ferris Beuller or however the fuck you spell his stupid name...that movie was lame. Pathetic hipsterism disguised as a jaunty farce, it all rang superficial and fake with it's contrived humor. Breakfast Club will forever be Hughs' masterpiece.

  • John Hughes is also dead....I think gene missed the point but he shouldn't burn in hell....because hell doesn't exist.

  • it's actually a lot easier to be a super cool high school kid when you're 24 years old as Broderick was in this film.

  • see the Uncle Buck review. They both missed the point there as well

  • Did Gene feel like the Godfather was a bad movie because the characters sat at the wrong spot on the dinner table? Bueller is and shall remain a great film. And Gene? Oh, he's dead. LOL Asshole.

  • @robotpanda77, uh, yeah, Siskel's dead. From a brain tumor. "LOL", or something. And obviously his dislike of a movie that you liked is what killed him. I guess.

  • @WastedPo This film has enriched the lives of countless people and will continue to do so for many years to come. Siskel was just a lowly film critic who never created anything himself but just criticized the works of better man. Any moron can sit in a theater and give these very personal, emotional responses of "liking" or "not liking" a film. There is no art to that. Yes, he is dead and yes I am glad that the world has one less prick in it. Burn in hell siskel.

  • @robotpanda77, Don't you ever criticize movies? Does that make you lowly? Don't you ever have an opinon about works of creativity? It's true that Ferris did enrich the lives of countless people. But by that same token, there are also a lot of people whose lives were enriched by S&E. Just because you don't agree with Siskel's opinion on Ferris Bueller doesn't mean he should "burn in hell." There is also no artistic integrity over not having any personal opinion at all about works of art.

  • @robotpanda77 I think you're taking this movie review show a little too seriously. Why get so worked up over one guy not liking a film that you apparently liked? Is it really that big a deal? Likes and dislikes are all subjective anyway and everyone is entitled to his opinion. Disagreements do not automatically render the other person an asshole. Just enjoy the movie.

  • Gene is like my dad. He hates Ferris Bueller because he thinks the sister is the hero of the film, and Ferris is just a punk.

  • @RockyBalboa211 This is an interesting time capusle though, showing you what "the adults" of the mid 80s like Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert (both traditional frontline Baby Boomers) thought of Ferris Bueller. Some liked it and thought it was a sweet, harmless story, others like Siskel thought Ferris was a little punk. Interesting because today in 2011 Ferris would be an over 40 adult that waxes poetic about the good ol' 80s when things were simpler, easier and kids behaved themselves.

  • @LoneWulff829...They pay critics because just like everyone seems to need a religion to tell them what to do. Folks need someone to tell them what movies to watch to. I know it's seems senseless, but so is religion. You can believe in God or a Creator without having to go to church and listen to dumb sermons. Just like you can pick your own movies to watch without listening to critics tell you what you should watch.

  • Ferris Bueller is in my top 10 list of all time!

  • Back to School was fun---Rodmey Dangerfield=funny.Ferris Bueller wasnt too bad either, tho its a showing its age a litte now.I agree more with Siskel about "Bueller" than Ebert.I thought it was a bit on the cheesy side even back then---

  • I have always held that being a critic is about the most worthless job there is. I never understood why you would pay someone, or ask someone, to tell you what your opinion should be. Movies are much like food, or music, everyone has different tastes, and you should always go with what you yourself enjoy. I have always liked FBDO myself.

  • what was gene thinking? he liked carrer oportunies his worst movie i think and baby days out not very funny at all but did not ferris? i cant beleave it ferris was one of the funnest movies of the 80s

  • Dude theis film is 1000 times better than the Blues Brothers this was a great film

  • Yet another huge failure by this duo. So many great films got the shaft by these guys. They truly over-analyzed everything. This movie was a classic to me and to millions of others. Why on Earth take advice from a bird what a worm should like to eat?

  • @wingmanalive

How is it a failure by the duo? Ebert did not give it the shaft, he gave it a postive review

  • @help4343 You are correct. I retract my last statement. I still believe they, from time to time, grossly misinterpreted many films with undue cause. Probably just to create that element of debate, ensuring job security.

  • Ferris Bueller---on my Top 5 all-time list.

  • It's like Siskel is auditioning for the cartoonishly uptight, over-analytical critic who would be the perfect foil for Ferris and Rodney Dangerfield.

  • Still love this movie. It's always going to be one of the greatest. Loved it as a teen and now my teenagers love it. Classic. Siskel...you're wrong.

  • Sorry, Gene, but if you don't get this movie, you're old.

  • and why does everyone like jennifer grey in this movie she's basically a snitch and a bitch and a cumdumpster

  • @pladampa and where are you now? that shit doesn't get you anywhere in life.

  • @SG1Mitchell Thanks for the after school special talk. I keep that in mind. LOL

  • @SG1Mitchell you know what, if you turned out fine congrats. but i kid you not the people in my high school who did that ended up pregnant, arrested, or became college dropouts. why may i ask if you hate this film are you on here making homophobic and disparaging remarks?

  • @SG1Mitchell I'm a junkie you happy! Can't wait to do a speedball that would put Robert Downey Jr. to shame :) !!!!

  • Funny how both films used Twist and Shout.

  • The clip Gene shows is "If you don't stop and look around at life, you might miss it." That's not important?

  • Siskel (R.I.P.) totally missed the point and I gotta agree when Ebert says he's to eager to find flaws, I LOVE THIS FILM

  • Siskel was probably upset because the video quality sucks.

  • Ironic how Siskel disliked the movie, but his replacement, Richard Roeper, called it his favorite movie. ;P

  • I hate how any time someone disagrees with Siskel, Ebert, or Roeper they claim that the critic "missed the point." Have you people considered that not everyone shares the same taste in films? Films are like all art - they are subjective.

  • could this video be any quieter??????

  • wonder if richard roeper got mad at this negative review from siskel, ferris bueller is one of his all time favorite movies

  • Comment removed

  • I love the retro Fritos and Chee-tos packages @ 0.13 :)

  • It's fascinating to think that if Siskel were still alive, he'd most certainly recant this review.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is one of the better movies ever made.

  • Thumbs up for this video!

  • woooooooooow thumbs down for ferris bueller???

  • Why did Gene have to open this review he totally missed the point.

  • Ferris is a bit of a Gary Stu, but I loved that film

  • Ned Beatty is quite good as the Dean.

  • Ebert is pretty well recognized as the more forgiving of the two, while Siskel is seen as more harsh. They both look stupid sometimes, usually Roger for liking some turds and Gene for ragging on some classics. I love em both regardless.

  • Well I gotta TOTALLY agree with Gene on this one. FBDO is a pretty dull movie. I first saw it when I was a teenager and quite frankly didn't really like it then either. There are some good lines and funny moments, but other then that the moral was bad, the supporting cast was boring, and Ferris was an unlikeable asshole. I agree that Ferris' sister was at times more interesting then him but overall the movie and it's concept just don't work. The very idea of it is stupid.

  • siskel missed on this one... ebert has never looked better...LET MY CAMERON GOOOOOOO

  • I think siskels brain troubles started a liitle early then people knew

  • " Dangerfield in his best role yet ! " .. I liked Easy Money and Caddyshack much better than this flick !

  • He likes Back to School but not Ferris Bueller? WTF?

  • Siskel was way off on this one.

  • How could Siskel say those horrible things about FBDO?!?!

    Team Ebert!

  • @andeaver1937

I believe the movie works more on par with how close you are to teenage years the first time you see it. I love it, But I rarely find a person who was in their 30's the first time they see it who loves it at all.

  • Nothing interesting to do? They ate pancreas, for crying out loud.

  • Did Gene even see this movie if he did he would know that its one of the best ever

  • Siskel REALLY botched this one.

  • Great to see old reviews even of obscure movies.

  • Always heard people talk about how hilarious this film was. I always thought it sucked ass.

  • FBDO sucked.

  • How much have movies changed.....imagine making a sucessful, entertaining, light comedy these days about a kid skipping school....it couldn't happen....if it was made today, Ferris would probably be a meth addict, and Sloan would be hooking....

  • Gotta TOTALLY disagree with Gene here

cant believe how badly he missed the point of the film

  • @StunningSteve Watching many of these old clips, he's often very very wrong about movies that went on to become immortal classics.

  • @StunningSteve You gotta think that the Siskel onscreen was a lampoon of himself irl. In real life Gene had John Travolta's disco suit from Saturday Night Fever.

  • Ferris Bueller and Back to School - two of my favorite movies! In regards to the Ferris Bueller review, great comedies always get better with repeat viewings but Siskel's comments are ridiculous. What a windbag.

  • Please, such bull-shit: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is infitely better than "Blues Brothers."

  • agreed! blues bros. is hugely overrated.

  • Siskel must've been in a bad mood. Jennifer Grey was the real star of Ferris Bueller's Day Off????? Broderick probably created the coolest highschool character ever in movies.

  • you're totally right. she stills the movie.

  • Maybe he had a headache. Old puddin' head

  • @Comictalent I saw the film 1 week after I graduated HS and I loved it. That was me and my 2 friends (though I wasn't dating the girl) when we could split and just do random fun stuff that wasn't too crazy. The school was too dumb and no cops or ANYBODY ever asked why a bunch of teens were running around on school days. We had fun. No parades though... :( I definitely identified with Ferris's attitude and got away with fooling my teachers

  • The principal molested Ferris.

  • Yeah Jacob Cohen was great.

  • I loved Siskel but he's way off on this one, IMO.

  • Siskel and Ebert reviewed this in June of 1986. They moved over the Buena Vista in the fall of this year. The first show after their move to BV started with their review of 'Touch and Go'.

  • I love Back to School. Rodney Dangerfield got no respect! RIP

  • I disagreed with these two a million times...but always understood why they said what they said! There justifications didn't change my mind...but it always made sense.

They were two major reasons I studied writing.

Btw, this must've been just before the movie to Buena Vista for these two.
