Music has always been my favourite aspect of Peanuts shows. Whether it's Vince Guaraldi or David Benoit, jazz or rock, music has always been one of the most important part of a tv show, particularly animated cartoon shows.
The music has always been my favourite aspect of Peanuts cartoons. Whether it's Vince Guaraldi or David Benoit, music is one of the important parts of Peanuts.
@1RichardHunt That's Joey Scarbury. He also had a no. 1 hit in 1981 with the theme to "The Greatest American Hero" TV show called "Believe It Or Not".
It would have been more amazing if Marine of "Flashdance" was rotoscoped with Snoopy in that one scene (a la 'Anchors Aweigh' with Gene Kelly), where they dance together.
I love him. Snoopy was the first character I ever draw! ^_^ He is my idol. I wrote to him once before he died. Hallmark & Dorney Park is the only place to get snoopy stuff. We miss you Charles! Ya look like my Grandpa 80% true. Love you. Peanuts forever. I use to collect the comics in the papers.
OMG, animation is fucking hard! DX I love how they've used kid voice actors all these years, it adds to the sincerity of the picture! :D (And embarrassingly enough, I could watch that Flashdancing scene all day! XD Rotoscoping is insane!!!)
I grew up with this documentary actually, it was one of the reasons I got interested in behinds the stuff stuff as a child. It's so great to finally see it again!
@HeraldMB: Yeah. We who like the behind-the-scenes stuff wouldn't have felt so awkward when compared to those who just watch things merely to enjoy them (sure, we did that too, but we loved the backstage bits also, whereas many others--we thought--found them boring).
wow. i wish i had a taping of this. i knew i saw something with a choreographer doing the flashbeagle dance. it's exactly what i wanted to see again. thank you, siffil8. :)
OMG that is so awesome the way they used the dancing from that human dancer and then were able to have Snoopy do it! I didn't realize it was all based on a real person dancing!
I think it's so neat how they used to animate cartoons with all the tracers and sketchers and painters. Now it's all done by computer, which gives them alot more options, but doesn't seem to have the same loving touch
Yes, this is a fascinating look at the way animated cartoons were done before the computer age. A lot of hand drawing still goes into today's feature-length animated films, but modern, cheaply made TV cartoons use computers to generate the backgrounds and much of the character movement. The result looks a bit cold and machine-like.
@scotpens:Yeah, and many of the programs lack the wit, charm, heart, and soul that made the old shows--which were for all ages, as opposed to being tailored towards one sole demographic like most programs these days--classic. ^-^
@scotpens Saying the backgrounds and character movement are "generated" is a bit of a misnomer. These aspects still need the hand of a living person to come to fruition. Though I completely agree in the sentiment that television animation lacks the deep-rooted naturalism that can only be achieved through a pencil and paper.
Drawn animation is still drawn on paper, but cels have been replaced with digital coloring, which mimics the old process (but in my opinion looks less warm). That didn't happen overnight. Disney hasn't used cels for their feature films since 1990 ("Little Mermaid" was the last one to use them), but their TV shows still used cels until the late 90s, I think. Same for most other studios. I think the last TV show to give up cels and go digital was "Ed, Edd n' Eddy," in 2004.
I'm tempted to say because it's faster and cheaper, but the thing is, the "cheaper" part wasn't always true. For most of the 90s the old cel process was less expensive than the coloring/compositing software that Disney started using for their features starting with "Rescuers Down Under." If it HAD been cheaper, TV animation would have gone digital much quicker than it did.
Even Disney's 90s shows were mostly still cels. So I'm not quite sure.
@scoot1105: It was done via dialog and trumbone. A person would read the dialog and ask the trumbone player to coordinate the tones of the dialog with that of the musical scales of an instrument.
Hey, that's Stacy Ferguson (aka Fergie) as Sally!!!...That's right...She was the voice of Sally in It's Flashbeagle, Snoopy's Getting Married and The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show!!!
@palmercomm: She's one of the lesser-knowns. In fact, Lauren Yohe--the daughter of SHR's creator--is the infamous "Darn, that's the end" girl in voice. Most recognize performers like the man who sang 'Conjunction Junction' & 'I am Just a Bill' or the lady behind 'Nouns', 'Adjectives', and other songs where her voice is easily picked up.
When Charles Shulz died there were numerous tributes to him, Garfield for example came across Snoopy's doghouse and decided to lay on top of it. MAD magazine did a special in which things that never happened in the comic finally happened: Charlie Brown succesfully flying a kite, Schroeder kissing Lucy, Charlie Brown strangling Lucy and Snoopy put to sleep.
this doco was a big part of my childhood!!! we had it on ape, and we'd watch it all the time! It helped my brother and I develop our strong appreciation for animation!
