The 1 in 5 that smoke aren't going to help the budget at all. Only 20 percent of the population smokes, and more quit everyday. Maybe we can break even, but the taxes don't really go that far from tobacco.
First, you dont make a lot of money off of cigarette tax, as smokers are in the minority and becoming rarer and rarer. Second, it makes more economical sense, as every economist will tell you, to force people to smoke. They will die younger, taking less out of the medicare system etc. Why? Because generally with a smoking related illness you die. Heart attack, stroke etc can come on suddenly and bang you are dead. My grandparents who don't smoke go to the doctor every other day.
Actually, my grandmother on my dad's side is 79 and has been smoking for 58 years. Smokes a pack a day and is in better health than my maternal grandparents who one has kindey failure and the other his heart goes into a-fib all the time and diabetic. They are also 80 and 79. They cost the system way more money. My grandfather has to have his heart checked at the doctor two times a week. So smoke away my friends! Smokers aren't bad people, actually they are helping the social welfare system.
Okay, 2nd hand smoke is believable. 3rd hand smoke? nonsense. I should be glowing with radiation in that case from the times my grandmother has hugged me or touched what I touched. Most smokers I know smoke outside, away from people and my state has a smoking ban anyway. So its really not an issue at least in my life. 3rd hand smoke is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. My mom died b/c of small cell lung cancer, & now my grandma on my dad's side has it too (it's blocking her windpipe). Both of them smoked from early ages. I don't smoke.

The 1 in 5 that smoke aren't going to help the budget at all. Only 20 percent of the population smokes, and more quit everyday. Maybe we can break even, but the taxes don't really go that far from tobacco.

First, you dont make a lot of money off of cigarette tax, as smokers are in the minority and becoming rarer and rarer. Second, it makes more economical sense, as every economist will tell you, to force people to smoke. They will die younger, taking less out of the medicare system etc. Why? Because generally with a smoking related illness you die. Heart attack, stroke etc can come on suddenly and bang you are dead. My grandparents who don't smoke go to the doctor every other day.

Actually, my grandmother on my dad's side is 79 and has been smoking for 58 years. Smokes a pack a day and is in better health than my maternal grandparents who one has kindey failure and the other his heart goes into a-fib all the time and diabetic. They are also 80 and 79. They cost the system way more money. My grandfather has to have his heart checked at the doctor two times a week. So smoke away my friends! Smokers aren't bad people, actually they are helping the social welfare system.

Okay, 2nd hand smoke is believable. 3rd hand smoke? nonsense. I should be glowing with radiation in that case from the times my grandmother has hugged me or touched what I touched. Most smokers I know smoke outside, away from people and my state has a smoking ban anyway. So its really not an issue at least in my life. 3rd hand smoke is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. We would ALL be dead if it were true.

Uh fun fact people that do not smoke can get lung cancer. A friend of my parents died from lung cancer, never smoked a day in their life.
I don't know about you but I like my air clean that is why I hate smoking. Fucks up my sinuses, and gives me nasty headaches.
