when you add a new layer just select image. but it sucks, cause unless you have adobe photoshop, your stuff will just be in the shape of a square.

how to add bones to creations?

create a bone layer. select the layer you want to have bones and drag up to bone layer until bone layer icon is blue or what ever color. then select the bone layer and the bone tools with be selectable. after add the bones, use bone strenght tool to make sure they don't moove too much or little of the pic.(when messing around with layers use the icon thingies in the bottom right corner)

It depends on your level of competence. Check out some of the videos done by greykid. He uses anime studio for some of his work and it's amazing.
