I find it hard to believe you cannot understand why it gets so many hits. A steampunk band performing in steampunk garb in a steampunk environment? Sounds like a trifecta win to me!
You've taken two of the greatest things ever and turned them in to pure awesome with amazing music. For this, I thank you so much. I just found you, as a band, and instantly you've become a new favourite.
Seriously. Pirates, Steampunk, great sound/music. Thumbs up! I seriously want to watch you all play live. Yes, that's a new goal.

53 people were hung for committing a horrible hate crime don`t hate if you don`t like it then don`t dislike just go die some were because steam punk is awesome
Absolutely brilliant! I have just recently come across Steampunk and Abney Park, it's great to have music to follow what can be only described as one of the most imaginative genres around. I'm hooked. Keep up the great work.
Found these guys while surfing Last.FM... and now I love Darkwave. When you mix that with Steampunk elements, you pretty much garunteed my loyal fanship.
I'm in love with the culture of Steampunk, the eccentricity of the attire&the imbelished instruments! What an awesome studio to work in! I love the feel of the music, vintage, yet modern rythym. The keyboards add a lot of depth in my opinion. Love the guitars, the bass stands out I think. Vocally, there are parts to understand, but his voice has a nice tone&he can belt when he wants to. Very cool sound-effect w/the Airship! LOVE THE VIOLION, nice touch!
Have you guys ever watched the comedian "Michael McIntyre"? I swear he's Captain Brown's doppelgänger!
Awesome studio, I've never seen a band take such pride in the aesthetics of their facilities. Can we hope to see some more performances in steampunk settings? Perhaps whilst mounting a daring raid on a microbrewery (with all the brass valves and copper tubes) you could perform a rousing rendition of Herr Drosselmeyer's Doll?
new fan here. loving your music. didnt even knew there was a whole steampunk culture til i watched an eps of the show Castle. starting looking it up and found you guys.
you guys are AWSOME!!! my brother introduced me to steampunk and your music when i was at his house in Oklahoma, where he said you guys played..... love this song!!!
update me: is this some kind of new gendre?:P are there people dressing like this now too? well well this might be the new teen thing i guess, well i dont mind much much better with pirate dressed people than emo kids
@Nightcrawlerinsweden This video was uploaded two years ago, this style has been very successful in staying exclusive and not becoming a fad, mainly because it costs quite a lot, and is only for real fans
@Nightcrawlerinsweden Something as awesome as this is unlikely to be a fad. Many steampunks are people who craft their own clothing and fantasy devices, so it takes effort and at least some skill to show off your steampunk pride. There's a lot of DYI involved in both art and engineer. Those who give into fads probably wouldn't go out of their way to develop actual skills just to be a part of a group when it is so much easier for them to buy black skinny jeans and fake glasses at hot topic.
I hope you guys stick around! Keep writing. I want to hear more of your potential. I love who you are and how you stay true to who you are...... I love your music, that it's involved, different instruments and tracks mixed with extras, it's fabulous!!! I'd love to sit in on a session at the studio........
steampunk is an individual envisionment of an alterd future according to the perspective of a patron of the victorian era (or that was the definition when the cocept of the genre was originally created by authors of the victorian era)
but of course given the fact that to most people the genre is kind of vage and that it is 2010 the line between past and future is often not very fine but the original definition of the genre remains unchanged (future to a victorian, but unknown to a modern)
their concert was great security sucked tho they were kinda jerks but they did a great show at A-Kon tho kinda weird i heard the next day that someone spiked their water. not sure if its true cause they all looked sober. but still great show
@wrylie188 (smirks) An actual design. I've been planning it for years. As of now, all I need is to decide on either hydrogen or helium, oak or pine wood, what material to use to hold the gas, and funds to pay for it. Basically all of the math is worked out, all of the calculations done, all I need it to make a "definate" plan of what materials and then I need the money to fund it.
@IamGreg73 awesome. I've designed a a hybrid hot air and helium envelope that, even when cold, has a lifting power of 2,625 pounds. By heating the air, i in trn heat the helium as well, so i can have hot helium without adding carbon dioxide to the mix, its quite exciting, really. I cant wait to start building the gondola!
@wrylie188 Awesome! Sounds like you really know your stuff...I was thinking of going with a seperate airbag that could be inflated to reduce the helium bag's volume, thus slowing the helium particles and lowering the lift capacity, but your idea seems to work better! What did you use to hold the helium? If ya want, I can begin work on a gondola and we can create a practical airship, perhaps form a crew? What do ya say?
@IamGreg73 you can buy spare hot air balloon materials, usually a mixture of silicon and nylon, which are able to survive high amounts of heat. My design incorperates two small, tubular envelopes ten feet wide and roughly seventy five feet long. in the center there is a core envelope of hot air four feet wide and twenty-five feet long that leads down a hole in the envelope and is attached to the gondala by a skirt. By heating up the core air, you in turn cycle hot helium around the envelope.
@IamGreg73 through this process, you can heat the helium without having to pump oxygen into the envelope and without adding heavy carbon dioxide to the helium. The gondola will be a twenty-five foot long, six foot wide canoe shaped structure, sporting full assortment of cockpit, living area, bunks, a small bathroom, and even a small kitchen. Only wish i hd the money to build such a machine. And, judging by your comments it would be a pleasure to fly with you.
@wrylie188 Aye...Where do you live? Maybe we could meet up and make this dream a reality. I am saving up for this project, and sadly currently I only have 40 bucks...But until we can save up enough to start, we need to keep in contact and ensure that we get every last detail taken care of. I'll send you my email through a youtube message and hopefully you'll accept my offer to become partners and we can start this project of ours.
@IamGreg73 sounds like a shittinly awesome idea, though perhaps we should work seperately to save the hassle of moving hundreds of pounds of equipment to different stations. Sadly, without a scanner, i cannot upload my designs.
@wrylie188 Very well. But I still insist we chat through email or alternative in order to double the brainpower. There is so much I need to figure out, such as what type of wood, what sort of motor to use, turning, and other things that I have ideas about that I would like an opinion on, and so that if I make any good progress I can share my notes.
@wrylie188 Also, on a quick note, how would you lower the ship? I can understand as you get higher the temperature would decrease, but once it reaches a certain altitude wouldn't it stay at a certain height?
@IamGreg73 if i get to a point where the balloon is pulling more weight then i have aboard, i plan to , first, vent hot air to lower temperature, and if thats not enough, i will vent helium, i'd prefer not to, because helium is rather expensive (which is also a reason i like to use hot air/helium hybrids)
@IamGreg73 no, i use a combination. Hot air in a seperat sack in the center, sorrounded by cells of helium. It allows me to heat the helium and make it more bouyant without adding heavygases like carbon dioxide.
dude haha i stumbled upon steampunk on accident looking for kool shit on instructables and now i love it haha dude some of the people look weird but there ballers lol
The only thing I don't totally love about this song is the line "We're the only airship pirates". Just strikes me as a kind of 'rawr no one else can be one, it's just us!!'
My steampunk persona is not and never will be a sky pirate, so I'm not taking it personally ;P
I have fallen for you guys. And fallen hard. You are everything that I love- engineering to pirates. PIRATES. Oh my god. My favorite thing besides Zombies. And Violins. Airships. <3 <3
Why does everybody think that you're not officially "Steampunk" until you're wearing goggles? Seriously, even in Steampunk, the only people who usually wear goggles are the people who fly the airships and do welding and stuff like that. I'm not an expert... Hell, I just found Steampunk Music, so.... Anyway ABNEY PARK RULES!!!
All around coolest band ever! My boyfriend told me about Abney Park and I am addicted! ^__^ Awesome outfits, amazing music and instrumental, the best looking instruments i've ever seen, and to top it all off, most amazing studio!
I just found you guys two days ago and you're AMAZING! I'd never thought of steampunk as a classification of Music, but I'm loving it so much. I don't buy CDs anymore usuially... but for you, I'm going to. So awesome.
You guys are amazing! I was lucky enough to be in my fav game store when a couple of you were there....played Monsterocolypse. And I acted like a silly fangirl. it was awesome. <3 you ALL.
I saw these guys at Elecktowerx in London last year with my mate Arron who has there insignia tattooed on his right arm- totally awesome performance!!
true, gothippy, but on the positive side, its better to listen to them now. Steampunk is only a subculture, albeit one with growing popularity, and our actions (ie listening to it, telling other people etc) is helping it to become a proper culture, and its always better to be the trailblazers. Brilliant song Abney Park!
I can't agree more! I don't want to be part of popular culture. What happens if steampunk takes off like goth has for the teenies today? I remember back in the 80s when being goth/new wave was different and now everyone's doing it. I'd rather keep steampunk to the true appreciators of this unique art!
Indeed. I do know someone who's a proper goth, and every other "goth" declares she isn't one. I just love the difference of steampunk: the aesthetics, the clothes and just how it breaks away from our modern world where we are surrounded by identical, faceless products swept up in mass consumerism. I love the hand-made contraptions and mods people have made for their own items. And heck, I'm only 15 ^^
@LuckyNinja99: Well, you're a cool teen then. :) My 16yo too! I know, I've had that accusation as well, even though I was an original 80s goth--just because I don't look dark and Satanic, the younger crowd is like, "That's not goth." They don't realize it's also not goth if you're propagating the dark and evil stereotype; that's just sticking yourself in another mold. Sure, steampunk can be classified as yet another mold, but at least you can do so much more with it!
Indeed. While I have noted similarities between steampunk and goth in terms of fashion, and have heard of many goths who have "converted" if you will to SP, I find that Steampunk is less restricitive. It encourages you to be creative and to modify and tinker. There's a broader range into which something could be called steamy, and I find the communities to be more friendly, such as Brassgoggles(dot)co(dot)uk
Wow, my last post above yours got a thumbs down, wonder why! Probably some emo kid got offended. LOL I'm one of those goth converted into steampunks. :) Although I was always attracted to the art before I even knew it was a subculture. Are you a member of the Brassgoggles group? You're right, we are a much friendlier group; I used to belong to a big goth online community but left because they could be so horrible.
To Miz (or Lia, you've got me confused so I'll just respond to this one). yes, I am a member of brassgoggles. A most marvellous place. I'm currently scouting for pieces to make a steampunk airsoft rifle mod. Everyone is really friendly, and although I've yet to properly engage in the forum, I've made the odd post here and there.
Baggy clothes, as comfortable as they are, never really made me feel right out in public. I've been considering getting a little SP in my attire. I think most people would look better that way. Maybe its time I got in on the dress of SP, instead of just enjoying the airships.
You'll never go back! My mom made me wear normal jeans when we visited her over Christmas, and the kids hated it. They all like me better in my skirts and pirate scarves, even the 11yo who is easily embarrassed!
Has anyone heard Aether Shanties yet? It just came in the mail today and it's amazing! I can't stop listening to it. Their best work yet.
For those who'd like to dress steampunk but say it's expensive, I'll tell ya how I do it (I'm always poor too). Visit thrift shops frequently! Peasant skirts and tops, brown or tan capri pants, long scarves, a basic pair of boots or leather sandals, and vintage jewelry. You can find inexpensive corsets on ebay (but I'm saving for a couple of good ones).
Adding to my post, that was too long. Layer two skirts and pin the top one up for a bustled look. Accessorize with a scarf around the waist (google pirate fashion). Oh yeah, funky tights, fancy feathers, and lace and leather strips for wrapping around your arms or tying in your hair. Ebay or thrift stores for steampunk jewelry. I dress either steampunk or pirate everywhere I go and thought I'd get weird looks, but mostly I get compliments!
well then u will probably need a collared shirt to begin with, maybe a dark coloured waistcoat or tatty jacket, trousers would be dark aswell, maybe battered pinstripes, goggles obviously, then a flat cap or bowler hat. you could also add a watch chain, elbow patches and gear style embroidery. shoes would either be smart black shoes or boots worn with the trousers tucked in
sorta has the creativiy of primus but with more steampunk

@wrylie188 Very well. But I still insist we chat through email or alternative in order to double the brainpower. There is so much I need to figure out, such as what type of wood, what sort of motor to use, turning, and other things that I have ideas about that I would like an opinion on, and so that if I make any good progress I can share my notes.
IamGreg73 1 year ago
@wrylie188 Also, on a quick note, how would you lower the ship? I can understand as you get higher the temperature would decrease, but once it reaches a certain altitude wouldn't it stay at a certain height?
IamGreg73 1 year ago
@IamGreg73 if i get to a point where the balloon is pulling more weight then i have aboard, i plan to , first, vent hot air to lower temperature, and if thats not enough, i will vent helium, i'd prefer not to, because helium is rather expensive (which is also a reason i like to use hot air/helium hybrids)
wrylie188 1 year ago
@wrylie188 So you want to use hot air instead of helium?
IamGreg73 1 year ago
@IamGreg73 no, i use a combination. Hot air in a seperat sack in the center, sorrounded by cells of helium. It allows me to heat the helium and make it more bouyant without adding heavygases like carbon dioxide.
wrylie188 1 year ago
@wrylie188 Very interesting. I like this idea...Have you tested it?
IamGreg73 1 year ago
@IamGreg73 sadly no. :(

The only thing I don't totally love about this song is the line "We're the only airship pirates". Just strikes me as a kind of 'rawr no one else can be one, it's just us!!'
My steampunk persona is not and never will be a sky pirate, so I'm not taking it personally ;P
Otherwise, SO MUCH LOVE FOR YOU GUYS!

Abney Parks problem is there just to far ahead in the futur for the masses. There music is truely awesome! hope they keep going for ages and ages!
Gothippy 2 years ago 7
true, gothippy, but on the positive side, its better to listen to them now. Steampunk is only a subculture, albeit one with growing popularity, and our actions (ie listening to it, telling other people etc) is helping it to become a proper culture, and its always better to be the trailblazers. Brilliant song Abney Park!
LuckyNinja99 2 years ago
I can't agree more! I don't want to be part of popular culture. What happens if steampunk takes off like goth has for the teenies today? I remember back in the 80s when being goth/new wave was different and now everyone's doing it. I'd rather keep steampunk to the true appreciators of this unique art!
mizpriz 1 year ago
And heck, I'm only 15 ^^
LuckyNinja99 1 year ago
@LuckyNinja99: Well, you're a cool teen then. :) My 16yo too! I know, I've had that accusation as well, even though I was an original 80s goth--just because I don't look dark and Satanic, the younger crowd is like, "That's not goth." They don't realize it's also not goth if you're propagating the dark and evil stereotype; that's just sticking yourself in another mold. Sure, steampunk can be classified as yet another mold, but at least you can do so much more with it!
mizpriz 1 year ago
Indeed. While I have noted similarities between steampunk and goth in terms of fashion, and have heard of many goths who have "converted" if you will to SP, I find that Steampunk is less restricitive. It encourages you to be creative and to modify and tinker. There's a broader range into which something could be called steamy, and I find the communities to be more friendly, such as Brassgoggles(dot)co(dot)uk
oh and goggles!
LuckyNinja99 1 year ago
Wow, my last post above yours got a thumbs down, wonder why! Probably some emo kid got offended. LOL I'm one of those goth converted into steampunks. :) Although I was always attracted to the art before I even knew it was a subculture. Are you a member of the Brassgoggles group? You're right, we are a much friendlier group; I used to belong to a big goth online community but left because they could be so horrible.
Liapriz 1 year ago
To Miz (or Lia, you've got me confused so I'll just respond to this one). yes, I am a member of brassgoggles. A most marvellous place. I'm currently scouting for pieces to make a steampunk airsoft rifle mod. Everyone is really friendly, and although I've yet to properly engage in the forum, I've made the odd post here and there.
LuckyNinja99 1 year ago
I think the only thing we have to worry about with steampunk going main stream is kids will actually dress NICE for once. Oh heavens.
onigojira 1 year ago
Hahahaha, how right you are! I already have all our costumes planned out for the next Abney Park concert. I'm going to have to take up sewing again.

Aw crap, my last two comments to LuckyNinja and onigojira, I was signed in as my daughter Liapriz. ROFL It was actually me.
mizpriz 1 year ago
Baggy clothes, as comfortable as they are, never really made me feel right out in public. I've been considering getting a little SP in my attire. I think most people would look better that way. Maybe its time I got in on the dress of SP, instead of just enjoying the airships.
onigojira 1 year ago
You'll never go back! My mom made me wear normal jeans when we visited her over Christmas, and the kids hated it. They all like me better in my skirts and pirate scarves, even the 11yo who is easily embarrassed!
mizpriz 1 year ago
@Gothippy They're far to ahead in the future, yet way back in the past aswell. :)

You can find inexpensive corsets on ebay (but I'm saving for a couple of good ones).
mizpriz 2 years ago 2
Adding to my post, that was too long. Layer two skirts and pin the top one up for a bustled look. Accessorize with a scarf around the waist (google pirate fashion). Oh yeah, funky tights, fancy feathers, and lace and leather strips for wrapping around your arms or tying in your hair. Ebay or thrift stores for steampunk jewelry. I dress either steampunk or pirate everywhere I go and thought I'd get weird looks, but mostly I get compliments!

Got any advice for guys?
DrFenderTelecaster 2 years ago
it depends, do u wanna be a gent or a working fella?
whowantsabighug 2 years ago
working fella
DrFenderTelecaster 2 years ago 2
well then u will probably need a collared shirt to begin with, maybe a dark coloured waistcoat or tatty jacket, trousers would be dark aswell, maybe battered pinstripes, goggles obviously, then a flat cap or bowler hat. you could also add a watch chain, elbow patches and gear style embroidery. shoes would either be smart black shoes or boots worn with the trousers tucked in
