There's a patch that Falcom released that beefs up Leonhardt big time. It drastically raises his speed/power and lets him create two copies of himself. Fun stuff.

It's part of the official Falcom patch that buffs Leonhardt. It makes him superman, but you don't have to win.

Actually, I'm not sure if you have to win even in the unpatched version. I never noticed, as the unpatched Leonhardt fight was laughably easy.
