It's easy to say that with a mind tainted by knowledge of Whitney's drug use and antics of the late 90's and early 2000's. Ultimately, when comparing the early success years of both, any reasonable mind must conclude that Aretha begets Whitney, and from both come most Pop singing of the last 20 years. Both women are pillars of modern American Popular music, and to take away either from the equation would change Pop music as we know it completely.
@direfranchement whitney was not one of the pillars of modern pop music at least in the sense that aretha & whitney were in the same era, they weren't. Pop music was well established before she hit the scene. it would be more accurate to say aretha & diana, whitney & mariah perhaps are fit better together for your claim.
@direfranchement i sure do, i just disagree with your assertion of houston's importance in pop music. there was nothing original about houston that wasn't already on the scene when she arrived. Franklin was an original however.
Franklin was an original? Franklin was a church singer that successfully brought Black Baptist vocal stylings into mainstream acclaim, and she was the best. Heavily influenced by Clara Ward and other gospel Greats, her earliest recordings are carbon copies of Clara's hymns! Aretha is a musical giant, but dismissing Whitney's influence is a very flawed approach when studying Pop history. Have you simply not been tuning in the last two decades, or is it willful denial?
@direfranchement yes, Franklin's originality was merging the gospel sound into pop music as a female. Houston was never anything other than a gospel singer dressed up in a diana ross gown.
