i love this from J.D but seriously this song, sung by Glenn Frey from farewell dvd is the best rendition of it I have ever heard him or anyone else sing.
Look how he's dressed. Does he look like a dude who's been out on the road working on his chops? YOU TWO Master-Debaters ever even consider the possibility that he is just performing for a crowd? Imagine that: no production (note the lack of stage lights) or quality sound check to remove any "MINOR" equipment issues. That's all just a guy playing a song..and doing so better than YOU TWO and anyone you know. Unless you have some video of your flawless work on youtube that I'm unaware of?
@banzai201 Cmon man, OBVIOUSLY you don't know what a good guitar should sound like....it's obvious that he's not pressing down hard enough for the notes to ring......I'm thinking it's either the guitar or his technique--either way I still enjoy his music....better than Glen?.....I think when JD was younger maybe.
@mrbabblehead So obviously YOU HAVE TO know what a good guitar sounds like... regardless of knowing what someone else's experience is, you're just that good of a clairvoyant. I'll bet you even know where I bought my guitars and when. Maybe he's nervous or out of practice... but if you've been listening to Glen's singing, he straining to hit the high notes, his ego is bigger than Henley's, Henley is smart enough to tune down on some of his songs.
@banzai201 Look dude....you stated that "the buzzing is a characteristic of a superbly straight neck".......do you realize how ridiculous that statement is? I can't read the name on the headstock but I believe he's playing a Santa Cruz guitar, one of the finest guitars you can buy....let's just say that we both love JD Souther and his music and leave it at that....peace.
@mrbabblehead Dear Mr. Babble Dude. I didn't hear you offer up any suggestions as to why there is some buzzing of his frets... perhaps the bridge is set too low, maybe a millimeter higher would alleviate the problem, his neck could be too straight, a slight bow would also have distance between the string and the frets, but then, having too high an action would make it difficult to press down on the strings. Or maybe like my dad and I, he's got hands like bricks and a vise-like grip on the neck.
@mrbabblehead .......... so, in either event, his neck is straight, since i doubt he'd play with a warped neck, probably playing with 010 or 012 strings, and he might have the action set low as not to have too much difficulty playing. Much easier having low action than high. So the buzzing is the result. SHALOM.
@joevs21001 Spot on! Bob Seger also co-wrote "Heartache Tonight" with the Eagles... Even sounds like a Seger song once you know that and listen to it again.
Does anyone know the name of the song that contains lyrics like: Hey brothers and sisters come gather round & he's painted his friends on the wall? driving me crazy not to remember that golden oldie.
A lot of people don't realize that J.D. Souther wrote and produced / co-produced many of the Eagles "hits". Jackson Browne also had a hand in much of the Eagles early stuff. In fact I can still remember when Don Henley thanked J.D. Souther publicly for their success at one of their awards ceremonies, I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Of course Souther's "Your Only Lonely" could easily have been an Eagle's hit too had it been sung by them.
I read somewhere that the Eagles wrote this song about Bruce Springsteen after he first played in L.A. If you think about the hype around Springsteen when his career started to take off in the mid 70`s (after the BORN TO RUN album) it makes sense doesn`t it.
the guitar doesn't sound so great, especially at the start. I don't know if it's the guitar itself or him. But the voice is very good, I wouldn't put a "Dislike" on this video
Thanks JD, Henley and Frey should be on their knees thanking you about now. Thanks again. "theres talk on the street to remind you" "they will never forget you until someone new comes along"
I learned about JD back in the 70s when he opened a show for America at the Music Center in Los Angeles. Bought all his albums and play a few of his songs.
Caught him Sunday at McCabes in Santa Monica (Eugene Levy and Tom Hanks, along with their wives sat in front of us). A great show. Played almost all the old ones, and some old standards from the 20s and 40s. It was a magic evening for me and many of my fellow attendees.
I couldn't figure out who made those guitars. All the same
I've always loved J. D.'s music. He is a masterful songwriter and great performer. This clip show's that he still enjoys what he is doing. I would recommend all his recordings from 1st to his most recent. What a talent.
it would be great BUT Frey and Henley wouldnt want the limelight taken away from them !!.......and they wouldnt let him play any of these songs to open with anyway !!.
It would be nice if JD could open some of the Eagles shows on their current tour so new fans could get to know the man who co-wrote some of their biggest hits. By the way, is that Jordan Zevon playing piano? It kind of looks like Warren's son.
@MorganHillChristine It's been a long time since you asked the question about JD souther's piano player, but I just came across the question. He is Chris Walters. He also played on the last few albums of JD's. Chris also has a CD out. Saw them in person, he IS awesome.
