@barrelracer1983 : I think they went with five characters because the song teaches about the five senses: Ernie appreciates seeing the star, Bert enjoys hearing the bird, and so forth. Numbers aren't such an obvious sensual pleasure; the Count can count silently in his head without using anything but imagination.
this song is actually quite poetic by seaseme street standards...Although I think that Cookie has a problem with food because he brings it to bed with him. lol!
I was watching this with my 3 year old and he pointed out something I'd never noticed. we were watching Prarie Dawn and he said, "she doesn't HAVE a nose."
can't get anything past him, can we? Your son's attention span is great considering that most little boys probably could't sit still long enough to notice that.
It's okay, I was a HUGE fan of Sesame Street as a child and whenever I watch old clips I cry because this was a part of my childhood I will never forget. I would love to work with the Muppets someday.
this is great its perfect i love this show i grow up with it i was five when i started watching it its a shame they took two of my favoirte charecters off the show which was lynda and barkley now ,my favorite charecters are big blue and grover as the qwaiter my dad loves it when they show his episodsodes i even love the garth brokes one and the rem episode.
Thatnks for posting this. I had this on a Big Bird StoryMagic tape. When I was little I was mad that I could only listen to this in my talking Big Bird doll because of the way the tape was recorded. I wanted to listen to it on a walkman. Now I can record it and put it on my iPod. Thanks!!!!!!
actually Disneysongtape if you still have the tape all you do is record the tape to your computer in a stereo player and then just delete the data buzzing side of the audio in your wav editor trim the music side to your liking then save file as mp3, i can way do this if i had these tapes i would digitize them
I always wondered how Ernie and Bert are able to see the sky (and a tree in this one) when their windows are supposed to be behind that divider wall in front of 123.
This skit/song always made me feel ready to go to bed, even if I just got up! So did some other things on the show, like when they played the show's theme slowly in chimes and it was a night time scene.
this has got to be from the late 70s to early 80s. I remember it from sometime in 85-86, but it'd probably been on for a few years before that... thanks for posting!
i cant beleive i came across this. i havent seen this sinc ei was fuckin 4. ive always love music, all kinds, metal, classical, country, but its kinkda funny that id rather listen to this then some of the shit music nowday. i think that it is wonderful to fall asleep in my wifes arms. thanks for adding it. great memonrys n' hoep to watch this with my future kids.
Whoa! I forgot about this one. Makes me appreciate my 4 senses. Why 4 you ask? I am near totally blind, and I've learned to depend on my other senses to compensate for my blindness, especially my hearing and touch. As the old saying goes, you don't know what you've got till it's gone! Thank you Sesame Street.
Also, "seeing" Herry holding his teddy makes me want to hug one myself - Aww! How sweet!
I did a school paper on how the blind see. I concluded that there may be a type of 6th sense at times. Every person I interviewed for the paper said they usually 'know things' better than people with regular vision. Good luck to you.
Thanks. And yes, sometimes, I do "see" by intuition. Over the years, I've learned that I may be blind, but sometimes the blind actually can see more than meets the eye. I hope you did well on your paper
How wonderful to show kids (and adults) this song about both your senses and at the same time appreciating what you are able to experience. The first two decades of SS were arguably a "peak" of civilization that we continue to slip away from.
Huh. You know, I've watched this video probably a dozen times with my kids - they LOVE it - and it didn't occur to me until I started reading the comments, that it's a song about the five senses.
I just took it as a lovely song, and it certainly is that.
This song is forever etched in my mind. Simply beautiful, and touching. We take a lot of the little things we have in life for granted. We should be thankful for them!
As for Cookie Monster with the cookies in his bed, what do you expect? That way, he'll have a bedtime snack nearby if he gets hungry during the night!
OMG! Thank you! I loved this one as a kid. It was such a soothing and lovely song. I also liked Prairie Dawn a lot as a kid-another reason why I liked this one.
Herry and the teddy bear-so sweet!
Cookie Monster with all those cookies in his bed makes me laugh hysterically!
Hehehehe...that's almost as bad as the street scene with Elmo thinking the alphabet song mentions his name, until an adult corrects him: "It's 'L-M-N-O-P', not 'Elmo-P'." (Yes, I saw that on TV about 15 years ago...)
I remember that episode! Thinking about it later on, I reaized that in real life when kids do that, it's usually fine to just let them sing it that way unless they're in kindergarten and learning how to spell. My mom was a preschool teacher and she usually took that approach with kids.
@indyfox: Now you know why Cookie Monster didn't sleep over at the apartment until Bert was away. (Remember that nightmare with the singing cookies, and the monster-shaped hole that Cookie left behind from breaking through the door in panic?)
It fits so well with Ernie's famous nightime song.

Wonder who wrote this song for Sesame Street. You'd never hear anything this clever and thought provoking nowadays.

The composer was Robby Merkin, and the lyricist was David Korr.
The song brings so much tears to my eyes, and I remember it very vividly, even when it was a series of poems.
