Elijah Wood and Sean Astin were the perfect choices to play these roles, absolutely perfect.
As Jackson said(paraphrasing here),"Translating Tolkien into movie form is tough, because you go two degrees to the left, it's Monty Python, you go two degrees to the right, it's Buck Rogers." Or something to that effect...
To truly honor the story, and make these movies convincing required a tireless effort on the actor's and director's part and walking a FINE LINE to keep it honest and real!
@campaigner111 I Well said! I must say though (and this is a touchy subject among LOTR fans) if it was up to me I personally would have chosen someone different for Frodo. Elijah's one of my favourite actors of all time and really gave it 100% in his role of Frodo but... I dunno, he's just not MY Frodo. I'd rather have cast Elijah as one of the High Elves and given the role of Frodo to someone just a little less "pretty" and ethereal-looking. But I absolutely agree Sean was the perfect Sam :)
@Jianlibao I fully understand what you mean about Elijah Wood. Even though I said he and Sean Aston were perfect for the roles, I meant in terms of the emotional energy and innocence they brought to the characters, which honored the spirit of the books very well. Their performances were moving and very convincing.
But I DID have a big problem with Elijah's age,I thought he was MUCH too young. As you know, in the book Frodo is nearly 50 when he leaves on his quest. Elijah is just too young.
@Jianl I tell people that I think as actors Elijah and Sean were perfect for the roles, but as I said I had problems with other aspects,Elijah's age being number one.
Alot of LOTR fans have justified Elijah's age by saying that once he inherited the Ring from Bilbo, it stopped him from aging, like it did with Gollum. I don't buy that. Frodo was still alot older than Elijah when he inherited the Ring, and was almost FIFTY when he left to go to Morder. Elijah was about twenty years too young.
I cried in the movie theater at this scene, and I've cried every time I've watched it on DVD and on Youtube. I'm a 40 year old man, but I have the wonder of a child in me and the love of fantasy, and it will NEVER leave me!
Anybody who says that fantasy is only for children is a FOOL! Tolkien's works are timeless, and these movies are a wonderful tribute to Tolkien's legacy.
People of all ages should embrace the books and these movies! Keep your heart open to wonder and fantasy!!!
Hard to believe these movies came out 10 years ago. I've been a devoted reader of Tolkien since the 1970's,and I NEVER believed a movie could be made that could do justice to these epic books.
I was WRONG.Jackson pulled off a miracle! What a tribute to Tolkien's life and works these movies are!
I have watched the full trilogy on DVD probably 100 times, and this scene, and others, reduce me to tears every time. From childhood until now, Middle Earth is in my heart and will be to the day I die!
whats the best way to ensure destruction of the ring? send a young midget boy with no combat training or knowledge of geography alone into the orcs homeland a good 1000 miles away, where he must then climb an active volcano. Thats elven wisdom for ya.
@gringolazlo A hobbit wouldn't be corrupted by the ring's power because they are simple folk and don't care for such things. Like Galadriel told Frodo, "if you don't find a way, none of us will."
@TOCR815 Well that's not exactly true at all! GOLLUM was originally a Hobbit, and he was completely corrupted and taken over by it! It ruled his life! The reason the elves decided that Frodo would be a good candidate to bear the ring to Mordor was because it would be what the Enemy least expected. But that doesn't mean there wasn't potential for the Ring to corrupt Frodo! It temped both Frodo AND Sam during their quest, and it nearly took over Frodo the same way it did Smeagol(Gollum).
@TOCR815 I don't mean to pilck on what you said, but it's somewhat misleading. Yes, the Hobbits are simple folk, and take pleasure in the basic, simple things in life..so YES in that sense, you're right, generally they wouldn't care for such things and wouldn't seek them out.
But if the Ring happens to come into contact with a Hobbit, such as the case of Smeagol, or Bilbo, and then Frodo, Hobbits are CERTAINLY vulnerable to being corruted by it, as all living beings were vulverable to it.
@gringolazlo He wasn't sent alone - refer to the film title. It was his own choice to go alone without even letting the others know (pretty much what this whole damn scene is about)
As one with no ambition for power, he's in fact perfect to have the ring - wasn't a clear point made to the audience that it plays on people's desire for power?
Frodo may not be a warrior but he IS sufficiently trained/educated to do his job. Boromir better fits your description and didn't u see what happened to him?
@gringo But when you read the books you'll understand that the reason the elves chose this path was because it was the LAST thing Sauron would think they would do. Sauron couldn't comprehend that his foes would want to DESTROY the Ring, his biggest fear was that they would USE the Ring as a weapon against HIM.
So sending a tiny Hobbit into the land of the Enemy with the most powerful Ring in Middle Earth, with the intention of destroying it,was the last thing Sauron would be on the watch for.
@gringolazlo You're right that it seems like great folly and was taking a terrible risk doing what they did. But you have to remember that if they had sent an army of 10,000 men along with Frodo to go to Mordor, it wouldn't have made the quest any safer or wiser. The Ring corrupts all who are near it, as it did the Fellowship, which led to Boromir's death.
Military strength or great warrior might are NO protection from the Ring, and sending an army with Frodo wouldn't have helped.
If they had sent a great army to accompany the Fellowship on its quest to Mordor, it would have actually put the quest in MORE jeopardy, because then their quest would be made obvious to Sauron. And, the army would have become corrupted by the Ring, and attempted to steal it for themsevles,as Boromir tried to do.
The only way to deal with the Ring successfully is to have as few people near it as possible, and to destroy it quietly and quickly.
in the book it explains how same comes to the realization that frodo is going alone and it talks about how Sam couldn't imagine how frodo could go without him, as he wipes the tears from his eyes runs back to the boats and he trips and cuts his knees open but still continues running, i started crying while reading that, just the thought of poor sam in tears, stumbling and bleeding back to the boats because he doesn't want Frodo to go alone to mordor, that is what a true friend is
@21Rushisaband12 What is ironic about that is that, first of all, they did not show Sam bleeding from cutting his knees open in the movie. But, during the scene where Sam runs into the water, Sean Astin (Samwise) cut his foot on glass and had some real issues finishing the scene. And yes, you are right. That is what a true friend is.
This is so emotional, it gives me courage everytime.
Sam is the best friend you could wish to have, and such a friendship is very very rare.
But what touches my heart is the first scene: watch carefully Frodo. Watch his expressions. Everything passes through his glance! Deep desperation, that slowly turns into strong determination. What a great actor, I'm really impressed.
well when he just walked into the water and then he couldn't swim i said "bye sam" and then Frodo saves him and the conversation that started then make me see that this is the most strong friendship ive ever seen xD
@Shanor909 I still hold that quote to heart to this very day. It may sound geeky but whenever things are looking bad I always try and remember this quote, it's comforting.
When i ask somebody, "hey, do you like LOTR?" the answer everytime is "yeah, i like it, there are cool fight scenes" but 1 people from the 10 says that: "yeah, i like it, because the movie has a lot of emotional scenes"
The music in this scene is amazing. One of the best soundtracks I've ever listened to. Lord of the Rings is one of the best movie franchises ever. Very well done.
Sam is the best friend anybody could wish to have. He's loyal and trustworthy, and Frodo should be glad to have a friend like him. if he was on Facebook, I'd friend him.
